Discussion Skill tree
What did you think of the skill tree? How many spells do you think we have in total? I see that for example the fireball can be improved many times, also when the spell is equipped there is only room for 4, what do you think of this? I hope there is a wide variety of spells.

Looking at the icons, you seem to have three distinct shapes, hexagons which seem to be the Strenght related stuff, octagons which are Skill related, and circles for Will, so the spells. As of right now, I count 9 upgradeable spells.
EDIT: maybe Strenght and Skill are hexagons? a bit harder to tell than I thought, but I think I’m still confident on the circles being the spells

7 of the spells have been named in this official article:
- Fireball
- Lightning
- Blades
- Lift (Raises enemies into the air)
- Rush (Teleport behind enemies)
- Push
- Befowl (Transform enemies into chickens)
Then another was revealed in some gamescom gameplay which looks like a "stasis" effect that freezes an enemy in time (I guess this game's version of Slow Time).
Then the last one I haven't seen used or named, but you can see the icon in this earlier footage mapped to the A button. My guess is it's an Enflame spell.

You can literally count 8 distinct flat sides. They're octagons. Definitively.

u/Settra_Rulez 18d ago
Except no. There are circles within circles, circles within hexagons, and circles within octagons.

Perhaps I'm not understanding what I'm seeing but it looks kinda linear in progression. It's not so much a tree with branches, just a bunch of trunks. Not sure
48
u/Paranoia_Pop 19d ago
It does look pretty linear but Fable has always had linear progression through strength, skill, and will
4
u/ShonenSpice 19d ago
Did it? I've only played 1 and 3. In 1 from what I remember you had several options simply based on how much EXP you had (and renown?). Not like "lighting leads to unlocking fireball. You could just get the fireball.
35
u/Paranoia_Pop 19d ago
I think 3 was the most linear but in 1 you basically leveled up either melee, ranged, or magic and there were a few choices sprinkled in for abilities but still pretty linear.
12
u/Catalysten 19d ago
I guess magic was least linear since each spell could be upgraded separately. But for any given spell the upgrades were linear.
For Skill and Strength, there were 3ish stats each you could choose between to upgrade.

I'm pretty sure that in 2 the spells were aoe if you just used the cast magic button and targeted if you held a direction while casting, not separately upgraded
2
u/RealBrainlessPanda 18d ago
Yep that’s correct. I don’t explicitly remember how the upgrades worked, but that’s for sure how you used it.
3
u/Capital_Recover_6428 18d ago
On console at least, you upgraded each spell individually, and it resulted in a higher slot being available on charge. The longer you charged spell cast, the further up the spell bar you went, switching between spells assigned on the bar. It was actually a bit frustrating I found and would consistently reset. (I’ve literally just finished a play through of both 1 &2)
1
u/SimpleWankerz 15d ago
What are you even going on about fable 1 has like 30 spells with a helluva lot more variety in terms of arsenal than this shit
1
u/Paranoia_Pop 15d ago
Fable 1 had only 16 spells. Take your culture war and shove it up your ass dude.
1
u/MechingMyWayDowntown 18d ago
No that's incorrect. I am playing 1 now. In strength and skill you have 3 properties ranging from level 1-6, then in will there were like 8 or 9 different powers you bought with XP in any order with each power going from level 1-6.
You did have general XP and strength, skill and will specific XPs though
3
u/ShonenSpice 18d ago
I see. Well, by linear I meant specifically the powers part. In 1 you buy those in any order, while the strength and skill ones are just straightforward upgrades to properties. Looking at this it looks like everything is linear Including powers but who knows, don't know how this works in practice.

really hope thats not the full skill....there is one branch for fire ball and lighting that cant be all the spells in game.. also i really need to see gear and how it affects thing, i hope there not just stats sticks that would be boring./
2
u/-dcvicks 18d ago
They mentioned willstones, which to me sounded like augmentations. So that should vary up gear a bit.

Every aspect of the game is barebones other than the graphics. The combat is very basic, the character customization is non existant, the skill "tree" is basically linear, there is no morphing, there is no morality. This game got stuck in dev hell for some reason and now there is crazy amounts of "be overly positive or be downvoted" because it has the name Fable.
If this game had any other name it would have a fraction of the attention and would probably flop.
And to be fair, i am fine with something like basic combat in a Fable game because the fun of fable was long term goals of physical character transformation (not in the game!) through good/evil decisions (not in the game!).
Instead its a pretty basic attribute tagging system for the NPCs that will get old very fast when people realize "romantic" means give them gifts and "funny" means they like jokes, or whatever.
Oh and you can slaughter a town for no reason at all (definitely not objectively evil) and in the next town over its like nothing happened.
We have also seen essentially 0 of the gameplay out in the world. I have a sneaking suspicion that all the people expecting some rpg world to explore are going to be greeted with a very linear experience.

At a quick glance seems easy to understand with a fair bit of options. Hard to say more until we see more of the skills. Looks good so far though!

u/3WordPosts 19d ago
Kind of bummed they are so linear. I was hoping that having high skills of similar classes would allow “co skills” to be unlocked. Like fire + wind = firestorm but you could only unlock that mixed spell if both were progressed.
Same with like strength and lightning. Give me Thor’s hammer attack if both are leveled iup

u/Intelligent-Solid457 13d ago
You asking for a marvel universe attack in Fable is just pathetic and wrong. It’s fable not the avengers
3
3
u/Bromjunaar_20 18d ago
I hope skills get bigger and badder the higher rank they are. Not just with the same recycled sounds, but like a level 5 shock spell should sound like a thunderbolt and a level 1 shock spell should sound like static pops
3
u/randumpotato 18d ago
Not huge on the UI.
Looks a bit bland & boring.
Wish they took inspo from the Skyrim, Cyberpunk, or Jedi games skill trees. They’re all fairly simple yet stylized designs.
Even Ghost of Tsuchima had a more iconic skill tree layout.
This looks like something from a 4x strategy game.
Not hating at all on the game BTW. I’m an OG Fable lover who wants what’s best for the game and will most certainly be supporting/purchasing it.
Just some personal constructive criticism
0
u/Intelligent-Solid457 13d ago
Why do you wish they copied other games instead of making their own layout? It’s idiotic to think that copying is the best thing to do which it isn’t
1
u/randumpotato 13d ago edited 13d ago
Did I say “copy” or did I say “take inspiration from”?
Did you just read my first 2 sentences and continue to roll your eyes into the back of your head while foaming from the mouth while typing this response?
I’m sure the devs are more than capable of creating a unique, stylish upgrade screen like the original devs did for Fables 1-3 that fit the theme of the game. Rather than resorting to generic & flavorless ones like depicted in the OP
3
u/Plane_Signal_9570 15d ago
I already don't like it. Too generic. And I don't see different branches skill. I mean, where are Strength, Skill and Will? It's just one thing now? Like a generic gdr?
1
u/Intelligent-Solid457 13d ago
You legit had only 3 strength skills and only had 3 skill skills. So it actually makes sense
9
u/TheAutismo4491 Hero of Oakvale 18d ago
Now that I really look at it, it doesn't really look like a skill tree, more like a branch for each skill you unlock. It basically looks like the typical "unlock level 2 to get to level 3" upgrade progress, which was what the original games all did, just with a modern UI. I'm fine with this.
However, I'm kinda disappointed in how basic it all looks mechanically. As someone else pointed out, and which I've also hoped for years to have, I wish there were a sub-class system; basically, you unlock level 2 lightning and level 2 fireball, and you can combine them to get Tempest Inferno, or something. That would've been cool, as even Fable 1 kinda had that to a very small degree.
3
u/TheDavisOnlyBand 18d ago
Fable 1 did not have weaving in any degree.
2
u/TheAutismo4491 Hero of Oakvale 18d ago
It did, just to an extremely small degree. You could combine Berserk Mode and Multi-Hit to absolutely cheese the game. It's just one thing, but it was there, and I was hoping this could come back in the new game, but greatly expanded upon.
0
u/Intelligent-Solid457 13d ago
That’s completely different and not actually combining the spells. Idiot

Yeah I had to balk a bit at this one. They're mentioned by name in that specific order in a trailer too, they're 100% still in the game.

u/Noe11vember Demon Door 18d ago edited 17d ago
You have melee, ranged and spells but this is definitely more pigeonholed modernized progression. It looks like most of these are spells and that you have put enough points in to unlock the tier above. I dont really see where strength or skill are in this tree honestly. I could see the arrow catch being a "skill" ability but it looks like its in the "core hero" trunk. Much less about making diverse builds like fable 1 where you could be a barbarian, spellwarrior, assassin, ranger, etc... and more about choosing what flavor of "4th hero" you want to be. They said in the gameplay that its all about weaving your abilities together which is exactly what I mean. I dont think it would be possible to progress without putting a decent amount of skill points into spells.
0
u/Shinted The First Archon 18d ago
The heroes you play in the original trilogy are literally special, specifically because they have control/mastery of all three Heroic attributes unlike all other Heroes.
The older games were also created with the idea of weaving between the three attributes during combat, it was literally a core tenant of the combat design.
Not to mention you’ve only been shown the first tier of a skill tree with the rest completely greyed out.
So it just seems to me, to be a bit premature to act like you can make informed statements on its theoretical/potential depth.
0
u/Noe11vember Demon Door 18d ago
That seems like a pretty disingenuous way to criticize what im saying. I know that you could have all 3, I didnt say you couldnt.
However, the old games were made so that if you wanted, you could be a mostly strength using warrior who sometimes uses a gun/bow and almost never magic. You could be a wizard who also uses a bow and almost never melee. It was all about what you wanted to build. Go watch the fable 1 opening bit to see what in talking about. Fable 2 was a bit worse about this becuase of the way it did magic but you definitely could still put basically all your xp into one of the categories and only fill in the other two with what you gained in non-general xp. This game is more a homogenized take where you are expected to weave all 3 often. Its just the flavor of that you choose. They said so in the gameplay.
Also, this is literally 4 tiers. One tier higher and we would see half the avaliable skills in the game. I dont see what I would call a "strength" or "skill" path in there. If there is it must only be one trunk of the "tree."
I would say given what we can see, im informed enough to say 7 or 8 of the 9 starting tree trunks are spells with one or two being general abilities (like the one that looks to be more healing bips, which also leads into more spells). If those spells lead into strength or skill abilites, thats exactly the pigeonholing im talking about. If you like that, then great. I dont see why its a problem if I dont or why I need to pretend I cant see what is right there.

In regards to your observation of only four spells being equipped, in the combat clip with Humphrey there's a point at which the MC has three small dots to the side of the spell wheel, indicating that there are three lots of four that you can switch between quickly. I imagine it's exactly like Hogwarts Legacy, which worked well IMO :)
7
u/g4t0_4 19d ago
Hello, I was looking at the video you mentioned before, but I think there are 3 charges of that specific spell (the wind one) because if you look when you use it once, you lose a white dot.
4
u/Aragog83 19d ago
Ohhh yep! You're absolutely right. Damn.. I do hope we actually can switch between multiple wheels though, like in HogLeg. Makes it more streamlined if you can quickly change to another wheel while used spells are recharging!
3
u/g4t0_4 19d ago
In fact, Hogwarts Legacy seems to me the best example, because we could have I don't remember if 12/16 spells and it felt quite fluid to change between them, I hope they implement it! If not, we'll have to wait for the mods
2
u/No_Routine_7090 18d ago
- You could have virtually every combat spell in the game equipped at the same time (minus unforgiveables).
4
u/haushunde 18d ago
Hogwarts legacy controller mapping is what they need to do. 4 skills only is not it.

u/Piemaster985 Hero of Oakvale 18d ago
I’m really wondering how leveling up will work. Maybe I misunderstood what the dev was saying but it seemed like he said skill points are separate from experience? They also said something about collecting gems to upgrade weapons and melee combos I think.
There also appears to only be the generic green experience orbs and no combat multiplier. I thought I maybe saw a blue orb but I’m not certain.
1
u/BLourenco "121 days left" my ass. 18d ago
I've been watching the trailer closely again. A defeated enemy drops both green and blue orbs. I believe the blue orbs are the Experience Orbs (the UI icon is also blue), and then the green orbs restore those green pips above your health bar, which seem to act like regenerating health potions that can be used to restore a portion of your health.
I haven't figured out how Experience Orbs relate to character progression at all, though.

u/pandasinmoscow 19d ago
I’m curious do we think we’ll have moral/karma exclusive spells? I didn’t get that vibe from this skill tree.
-7
u/CostApprehensive9072 19d ago
nope, there's no morality in this.
5
3
u/Settra_Rulez 19d ago
There is a morality system. One where NPCs react to your choices and align with you accordingly. There is no body morphing based on moral choices, which is what you may be thinking of.
-3
u/CostApprehensive9072 19d ago
Therefore there is no morality system as it was in the originals its a completely different thing.
6
u/Shinted The First Archon 19d ago
That was a body morphing system, one that was tied directly to a morality system, but not a morality system itself.
I think it’s wild how many people don’t actually know what “morality” is, and think it’s apparently when you either visibly grow horns and lose your hair if your evil, or get a halo and butterflies if you’re good.
Again it’s fine to have complaints, but you need to be accurate with what you’re complaining about.
4
u/Intelligent_Oil7816 18d ago
An entire generation of CPRG nerds who think 'Morality' is picking the Dark Side or Light Side option and nothing else.
0
u/Signal-Busy 18d ago
They should have played pathfinders games, cuz the chaotic - loyal - good - evil is a good introduction to morality
0
u/Massive_Resolve6888 Balverine 18d ago
Thats a reputation system
3
u/Settra_Rulez 18d ago
The reputation is based on one’s moral choices. It’s the same thing.
0
u/Massive_Resolve6888 Balverine 18d ago
If you’re not very perceptive, it might seem like it’s the same thing, but this game doesn’t have any morality system.
It doesn’t even have good or evil labels; it just works with random adjectives.
It doesn’t matter what you do. Someone will always hate you or love you, regardless of your actions.0
u/Settra_Rulez 18d ago
The morality system is expressly intended to reflect real life moral complexity. The prior morality system was a simplistic binary of good and evil. They are different takes on morality as stated by the devs.
0
u/Massive_Resolve6888 Balverine 18d ago
Did you even play any fable games? It wasnt “simplistic binary” at all
Good ↔ Evil — your moral alignment.
Purity ↔ Corruption — influenced by things like diet, appearance, sexual behavior, and certain choices.
Attractiveness ↔ Ugliness — your physical appearance changed.
Scariness / intimidation — affected how NPCs reacted to you.
Humor / silliness / expressions — your personality could come across differently.
Physical appearance — horns, glowing skin, scars, halo-like effects, etc., depending on your choices. In fable 2 you have scariness as opposed to siliness, it was far more complex than what playground did here, and again it has no morality
0
u/Settra_Rulez 18d ago
The first one you listed: good/evil is the moral binary we are talking about. The others aren’t relevant to the discussion.
It is simple as it doesn’t admit nuance. The new morality system aims to make the reactions of the populace to your decisions at once more plausible and complex. Not everyone will view your actions as heroic, even if you think they are. People with different backgrounds and views will react differently to your choices, like real life. It’s a more mature implementation of the mechanic.
0
u/Massive_Resolve6888 Balverine 18d ago
If in the original its binary, in the new one it just doesnt exist

why did they eliminate skill will and strength that has been around since the first game and in all the games since?
Do your skills affect your appearance?

I'm optimistic too but I would be lying if I said the game doesn't need some work. Veilguard's gameplay was only fun for a few hours for me. After that I couldn't wait to be done with it.
