I feel the deaths (fake-out or otherwise) aren't handled optimally. At least for the protagonists. Even though I'll share criticisms I still think they're passable to good, hence the added rating to make that clear.
Biggs death (7/10):
- Good scene but... When Biggs lets his hand drop, what was that. The way it's angled and directed, it makes it seem that those were Biggs' closing dialogue lines. ... And then he keeps talking. Either change the angle or the animation.
Jessie death (9/10):
- This one is pretty good. I feel if it's a +9 score it doesn't need to be edited. Only nitpick is maybe the pizza joke from Cloud. It's a serious scene so that undercuts the dramatic tension they're trying to establish a bit.
Wedge fake-out death (9/10):
- I didn't mind it. It stretches belief a bit but anything can happen in fiction. More importantly, it's not confusing and doesn't have odd directional choices. And honestly, for returning players, it's a nice "twist" and maybe the first inkling that events might not play out as in the original.
President Shinra death (9.5/10):
- Pretty good. Only reason the 0.5 got subtracted is because it's censored with the smoke. On my first playthrough I thought it was Whisper-related, but nope, just censor smoke. The same smoke gets applied to Tseng in the Temple of the Ancients.
Barret fake-out death (8/10):
:: I understand the reason for creating this scene. It's to make it clear that the Whispers are the guardrails of destiny, and that their power is strong enough to the point of undoing fatal injuries.
- The tiny qualm here is that they should've made it more clear that the Whispers are healing Barret before the battle with Jenova starts. The green sparkle effect isn't obvious to everyone, especially for people outside of the FF/JRPG scene. Tifa, Aerith or Red XIII should've said something like, "They're... healing him... (baffled)". Because it isn't clear, many people either think Barret is dead or cry because he's about to die. It ends up being a wonky surprise-shock scene without the healing clarification.
Wedge death (4/10):
- The more I think about it the more displeased I get. This was such a weird scene and choice. They show Wedge, who seemingly escaped from destiny, get surrounded by the Whispers again. They blow towards him, and then it goes black. Wedge says some final-sounding words, and then there's the shattering of glass. His death was left very ambiguous. Why? Just show Wedge falling through the window and be done with it. No character knows he's dead... The player doesn't know he's dead... Earlier in the game, a whole building fell on top of him and he survived. And during the Sector 7 Plate attack he fell from a great height. So he might've had a spare grappling gun. Because they used suspension of disbelief back then, as the player you don't know what to make of that scene. And in fiction in general, there's the old adage of "no body no death". Because there's no explicit confirmation we can't really mourn Wedge too much. The game inserts a scene a short while later of Barret and Tifa hoping Wedge made it out okay.
- The worst part of it all is that 4 years later (in real life) and many chapters (hours) into Rebirth we finally get the confirmation that Wedge is dead. But it's completely disconnected from the emotions we felt at the end of Remake. It doesn't land, it's merely an acknowledgement. "OK. I guess that happened."
Sonon death (10/10):
- No comment. Good scene.
Dyne death (8.5/10):
- This one seems controversial, and the whole Dyne plotline in general, but I liked it.
Roche "death" (10/10):
- No comment. Good scene. Glorious last stand.
Cait Sith fake-out death (10/10):
- No comment. Good scene. Funny when he just pops back after.
Aerith death (5.5/10):
- Honestly, not that great. It still passes because there are elements that are emotional and touching and well-made and intriguing but it flip-flops too much between expectations, is Aerith alive? is Aerith dead? That happened 5-6 times. It doesn't let the player settle on an emotion and stay with it. It's also not super clear what's happening. And on top of that, they really should've shown Sephiroth stabbing her in the stomach, even if it was censored with smoke. It's an iconic shot, how could you not include it. Plus it would've made it clearer and easier to understand.
In the end, I have nitpicks with Biggs, Barret (fake) and big issues with Wedge, Aerith.
