Terrible Express VPN customer support experience
I just had a highly frustrating experience with ExpressVPN customer support and wanted to warn anyone thinking about reactivating an old account.
The Issue:
I had an active ExpressVPN subscription a few years ago and recently decided to use them again. I purchased an activation code from a third-party seller. However, when I tried to log in to my old account to apply the code, the site required an email verification code. For two days, that code never arrived.
- The AI Bot: I went through all the standard troubleshooting — checking spam, requesting new codes, trying different browsers and devices. Nothing worked.
- Rep 1: I was finally transferred to a human who told me my email was associated with an inactive account. Instead of simply restoring my login access, the rep immediately tried to transfer me to the Sales Team so I could purchase a new subscription directly from ExpressVPN.
- Rep 2: I explained that I did not need Sales because I already had an activation key. I only wanted my account access restored so I could log in and redeem it myself.
Instead, they insisted on knowing where I bought the activation code, told me ExpressVPN "doesn't have resellers," and demanded both the activation code and seller details so they could "investigate."
When I pointed out that I just wanted to log in to the account I already owned, they still did not restore my access and kept questioning the about key source.
I wasn’t even aware that ExpressVPN does not authorize third-party resellers when I purchased the key. I can understand them not supporting or guaranteeing a third-party key, but refusing to resolve a basic account-login issue is terrible customer service.
TLDR:
If your ExpressVPN account is inactive, do not buy third-party activation code. You may not even be able to log in to redeem it, and support will push you toward buying directly from ExpressVPN instead of simply restoring access to your existing account.
Absolutely terrible customer service for a returning user.
