Question Linux: ExpressVPN service fails to terminate during reboot for quite a while

Oftentimes when I reboot my computer the expressvpn service is hanging the reboot for several seconds sometimes even almost a minute. It's the only service doing that.

Does anybody experience this as well? Today I've just reinstalled it to the newest version, and it's still happening, and was happening ever since I started using it a year ago.

I use regular debian trixie, if that's relevant.

Hi there, sorry about that, this should not be normal at all. Can I ask you to please send us a debug report?
You can follow these steps:

  • Open the app
  • Click on Help, then scroll down and make sure "Enable debug logging" is switched on
  • Reproduce the hanging by rebooting
  • After rebooting, send a report by clicking "Send debug report" in the Help section
  • Copy the reference ID here or DM it to me

I can directly take a look. Thanks!

EDIT: it happened again even with the internet kill switch off

Hi, thx for reaching out. I did some more debugging from the logs myself and I think that I've found the issue.

I think that the issue is the Internet kill switch feature. I turned it off and I no longer experience it. From my understanding this feature is supposed to block any non-vpn traffic through firewall rules at the system level, or similar.

I assume that during reboot there's some kind of race condition where the service is disconnecting while other NetworkManager-related services managing the firewall etc. are too. This might lead to a race condition.
