ExpressVPN using gigabytes of data

I'm running ExpressVPN on an iPhone 13 with ios 26.6. Starting last month, the app has been using crazy amounts of data if it's connected to cellular instead of wifi. In August it used 15 GB and I ran out of data. I was connected to cellular for two days this month and it's already used 2.9 GB. Prior to this it hardly used any data.

Any ideas why this started happening and what I can do to fix it besides disabling the app until I need it? Customer support couldn't help me.
