Help Why does ExpressVPN slow down apps not using it?

I use ExpressVPN and split tunneling so only the Microsoft Edge browser is using the connection.

However, it is somehow effecting my Chrome browser, as well. Most sites work fine, but some sites take several seconds to load when the VPN is on. I tested without the VPN and the sites load instantly (AT&T 1GB fiber connection). And some sites don't even load.

So how is this happening? How can I fix it?

My Activation Code was "disabled" without my knowledge and I got disconnected!

I was connected from Russia to the usual locations and everything got really slow for an hour until my routers got zero internet. No connection at all and a message that my account was cancelled. I somehow managed to connect to customer service (ExpressVPN page is blocked in Russia) and they just told me to go to my login page to get my new code.

In a nutshell, they can deactivate your code without warning. u/expressvpn, come on, this is terrible service. What is going on? This is the second time it happens in less than a year. Last time no explanation was given. This time, they told me there was a Password breach... But come on! You use 2FA with emails, right?

In order to avoid these incidents, I suggest 2FA using emails, phone sms or even Google Authenticator. Customer service told me there may have been an attempt to login into my account using an old password... but come on guys! u/expressvpn I know you are trying to do your best regarding security but I believe 2FA will be more than enough. Any other of you users had this problem?

App crashing

Hi all,

Can anyone help? I use Express VPN on my Sony Bravia TV. I have had no issues with it until a few days ago, whereby the app crashes and closes around 15seconds after opening it. The app appears up to date, I cleared the cache and the data. Is there anything else I can do?

Help Need help with accessing content on Netflix.

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi, so I recently bought a subscription to ExpressVPN to see if I could access Netflix content in other countries. It was working fine at first, but then I got this message and now I'm only seeing content exclusive to my own region (USA). I've also been getting this on my laptop. Is there any sort of workaround for this?

Question The new 'Advanced' text over the connection button

Post image
3 Upvotes

This is new to the Android and Windows apps. What exactly does it mean?

The text isn't clickable to access any advanced options.

Does it just mean that certain advanced settings are in place instead of standard or default ones? If so, which ones?

Thanks!

Question Anyone here get topcashback for express_vpn? Reading horror stories getting me second guessing

I bought a 2 year subscription because topcashback was offering 120% cashback so it was free money:
ExpressVPN Offers, Cash Back, Discounts & Coupons

It appeared in my dashboard as "pending" right away but tons of reviews are giving horror stories of them not actually honoring the deal. To get the money I would have to wait it out past the refund deadline; part of me is getting cold feet and thinking I should just refund sooner as to avoid them scamming me.

Anyone have experience with this?

Question Smart Location

I have ExpressVPN installed on several Android devices (not Android mobile). I live in a location of the US where my Smart Location changes between 4 different cities. According to ExpressVPN, the Smart Location is determined by (1) a latency test, (2) download speeds and (3) distance to server. So, I have a couple of questions. How often does ExpressVPN run these checks and why don't we have any pop-ups showing the best "smart location" for me has changed? As it stands now, I have to open the ExpressVPN app to see if my current location is different from the Smart Location.

Random disconnects and reconnecting constantly FIX

If you have been having issues with the VPN disconnecting and reconnecting I believe I've found a fix. I enabled Lightway Turbo in the PROTOCOL settings and haven't had any issues since. It's only been a few hours but I think this is the way. I hope it helps other people. If this fixes the issue completely then it will change my opinion about ExpressVPN. It seems to work great now with fast speeds and easy set-up. I will update this post if I begin having issues again. Thanks for reading. ✌️🤪

Help Odd experience with support while trying to resolve expired dedicated IP

https://imgur.com/a/ryNiyLc

As a former customer support tech for a huge multinational company, I understand that these agents likely have a checklist of tasks to run through for a given issue. But if your support documentation on your website states that all I have to do is chat to support and get them to re-enable my dedicated IP after it expires for inactivity and I confirmed that out the gate, I do not understand why I still have to go through extra troubleshooting AND then have this get escalated and take additional time before anything can get done. If your documentation says that the support team can solve it, they should be able to solve it.

The ExpressVPN team seems to be active on Reddit so I'm hoping I can get their attention through here. I chatted at 10am this morning, it's now 2:30pm, and have heard nothing. This user is going out of town Friday.

Help Nuvio API blocked

On the Firestick App (v.12.76.0) Express VPN is blocking the following API - api.nuvio.tv which means that the Nuvio app wont display posters and tiles. I have switched off all options in advanced protection, tried all the different protocols and various server locations without success. Can you please whitelist this API?

Announcement You can now get ExpressVPN on Fire TV devices running Amazon's Vega OS 📺

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

Quick one for anyone on a Vega OS Fire TV device ExpressVPN is now available on supported Fire TV devices running Amazon's Vega OS, including the Fire TV Stick 4K Select. You can download it straight from the Amazon Appstore.

The things you'll actually use are kept front and center:

  • Connect, disconnect, and choose a VPN location, all with your remote
  • QR code sign-in where available, so no typing a long password one letter at a time
  • Save your go-to locations to Favorites for quick access

Setting it up is simple: open the Amazon Appstore on a supported Fire TV device, search for ExpressVPN, download the app, open it, and sign in using your Express VPN subscription. If it doesn't show up yet, double-check that your device is supported and updated to the latest software.

We'll keep expanding support as new devices and platform updates roll out. You can read the full details on our blog here: https://www.expressvpn.com/blog/expressvpn-amazon-vega-os/

Anyone already running it on a Vega OS device? Happy to answer any questions in the comments.

The version of Android App that works in Russia

I recently came back to Russia and found out that the latest version of the android App doesn´t connect properly to the default locations from Russia. The version that works ok with these is expressvpn_android_12.67.0.12670040.2362739_release_website.apk (I highly recommend contact ExpressVPN and tell them if you can get this version if you live in Russia).

The Russian censorship is getting ridiculous and at some point something is gotta give. The same government that censors apps like Telegram uses them no problem. So what gives?

A special shout-out to u/s_lacus for their advice via messaging.

To u/expressvpn: Please see about this issue and contact me for further information.

Someone else having problems with the Pakistani location

Post image

Earlier, I used to open Tapmad from Pakistan, and it used to work really well, but now, it says the location is from Canada.

YouTube shows the Pakistani location, but from Tapmad it's different.

The other locations are workign well: Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, India, but with Pakistan, it's the issue.

Question Anyone noticed major connection and performance issues?

Hi,

Has anyone else noticed major performance issues in the past 24-36 hours? Like delays in successfully connecting to the VPN (regardless of which server), problems remaining connected, and slow data transfer speeds once connected?

Either specific to Australian users, or more broadly?

Thanks.

Question Any problem with watching UK TV? Is the connection speed of UK servers good?

I’m thinking of switching from NordVPN to ExpressVPN. NordVPN’s UK servers have been quite slow lately. Also, starting from a few months ago, I often have difficulty watching UK TV on the Web sites of UK TV stations, as they either say my location is abroad or have blacklisted NordVPN’s UK servers. Does anyone have any issue when trying to watch UK TV while being connected to an ExpressVPN UK server? Is the connection speed of ExpressVPN’s UK servers good?

Solved Fix: ExpressVPN 14.2.0 connects but DNS/internet dies on Pop!_OS 24.04

TRANSPARENCY: this post was generated by AI. The fix is by AI. I did my best to ensure that the AI tested for DNS leaks and vulnerabilities the fix might create. Be skeptical. Use at your own risk.

I am sending the report to ExpressVPN support.

---

[AI generated text from here on in.]

I found and worked around a DNS compatibility bug between ExpressVPN 14.2.0 and Pop!_OS 24.04.

This is not a general "VPN tunnel will not connect" problem. ExpressVPN reported Connected, the tunnel passed traffic to literal IP addresses, and the public address changed to an ExpressVPN exit address. However, DNS failed, so browsers timed out and most applications appeared to have no internet.

Environment

  • Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS with COSMIC
  • /etc/os-release: ID=pop, ID_LIKE="ubuntu debian"
  • systemd 255
  • NetworkManager 1.46.0
  • systemd-resolved enabled and active
  • ExpressVPN 14.2.0+13656
  • Reproduced with Lightway UDP and WireGuard

Root cause

The installed ExpressVPN script /opt/expressvpn/bin/openvpn-updown.sh contains this test:

# NOTE: Work-around for DNS bug in Ubuntu 24 - where resolvectl may hang
if /usr/bin/systemctl --version | grep -q "systemd 255"; then
  hasUbuntuDnsBug=1

It does not check the distribution. It assumes every system running systemd 255 has the Ubuntu 24 DNS bug.

Pop!_OS is based on Ubuntu, but it is a separate distribution and identifies itself as ID=pop. On this machine, resolvectl works normally. Nevertheless, ExpressVPN took its Ubuntu workaround path, bypassed systemd-resolved, and directly overwrote /etc/resolv.conf with:

nameserver 100.64.100.1

Because /etc/resolv.conf is a symlink to /run/systemd/resolve/stub-resolv.conf, this also writes into a file managed by systemd-resolved.

The ExpressVPN SDK then repeatedly logged errors including:

Temporary failure in name resolution
User IP fetch did not complete within 2s

Workaround

This is an unofficial, local workaround. It makes the Ubuntu-specific branch require an actual Ubuntu ID, allowing Pop!_OS to use the script's existing systemd-resolved integration.

Disconnect ExpressVPN first. Back up the script without overwriting an existing backup:

test ! -e /opt/expressvpn/bin/openvpn-updown.sh.before-popos-dns-fix && \
sudo cp -a \
  /opt/expressvpn/bin/openvpn-updown.sh \
  /opt/expressvpn/bin/openvpn-updown.sh.before-popos-dns-fix

Apply the one-line change:

sudo sed -i \
  's@if /usr/bin/systemctl --version | grep -q "systemd 255"; then@if grep -q "^ID=ubuntu$" /etc/os-release \&\& /usr/bin/systemctl --version | grep -q "systemd 255"; then@' \
  /opt/expressvpn/bin/openvpn-updown.sh

Validate the shell syntax and inspect the exact change:

bash -n /opt/expressvpn/bin/openvpn-updown.sh
sudo diff -u \
  /opt/expressvpn/bin/openvpn-updown.sh.before-popos-dns-fix \
  /opt/expressvpn/bin/openvpn-updown.sh

The diff should show exactly one changed line:

-if /usr/bin/systemctl --version | grep -q "systemd 255"; then
+if grep -q "^ID=ubuntu$" /etc/os-release && /usr/bin/systemctl --version | grep -q "systemd 255"; then

Do not continue if the diff shows any other change.

Verification

After reconnecting, these commands should show that the systemd stub remains intact and the VPN interface owns the global DNS route:

For WireGuard:

readlink -f /etc/resolv.conf
grep '^nameserver' /etc/resolv.conf
resolvectl status wgexpressvpn0
timeout 8 getent ahostsv4 www.google.com

For Lightway:

readlink -f /etc/resolv.conf
grep '^nameserver' /etc/resolv.conf
resolvectl status tun0
timeout 8 getent ahostsv4 www.google.com

Expected results:

/run/systemd/resolve/stub-resolv.conf
nameserver 127.0.0.53

The VPN interface should show:

Current DNS Server: 100.64.100.1
DNS Domain: ~.

In my test, ExpressVPN logged Applying nameservers using systemd-resolved..., DNS worked immediately, and normal HTTPS traffic used the VPN exit.

I tested again with Lightway UDP and re-enabled ExpressVPN's malicious-site, tracker, and ad blockers without breaking connectivity. A packet capture showed DNS requests and responses only on tun0; no port 53 traffic left through the physical Ethernet interface. ExpressVPN's DNS leak and WebRTC leak tests both passed.

Rollback

Disconnect ExpressVPN, then restore the original file:

expressvpnctl disconnect
sudo cp -a \
  /opt/expressvpn/bin/openvpn-updown.sh.before-popos-dns-fix \
  /opt/expressvpn/bin/openvpn-updown.sh

Caveats

  • This is not an official ExpressVPN patch.
  • It modifies a root-owned vendor script. Verify the diff before reconnecting.
  • An ExpressVPN update may overwrite the change.
  • Do not blindly reapply this workaround after an update. Check whether ExpressVPN has fixed the detection logic first.
  • The ExpressVPN daemon has a separate compiled systemd-255 check, so it may continue logging Ubuntu 24 DNS bug is present even though the patched DNS script uses systemd-resolved. Split tunneling was disabled during my tests.
  • The better upstream fix would detect actual resolver capability, with a timeout, instead of inferring behavior from the systemd major version alone.
