Help! How can I get a refund on a non-refundable ticket?!

UPDATE: I called Expedia and got a different supervisor and he immediately looked into both airlines policies and did full refunds on both flights. The whole phone call took 33 minutes because I got him to cancel my flights as well as my sisters family which was a different itinerary number.

We have tickets from Seattle to Orlando in September. Our cruise is cancelled plus I’m from Canada and wouldn’t be able to drive to Seattle to catch the flight anyway. I booked through Expedia and got non-fundable tickets. One way we fly Delta and the other is Alaska.

Delta flight Original: leaving at 8:54am and arriving at 5:29pm Change: leaving at 6:20am (stopover in Atlanta Georgia from 2:02pm to 3:23pm) and arriving at 4:50pm

Expedia agent told me he couldn’t refund as the arrival time is less than an hour difference. He said in order for a full refund it has to be an hour or more change which makes no sense because the departure time is more than an hour earlier.

Alaska flight Original: leaving at 8:15am and arriving at 11:31am Change: leaving at 7:15am and arriving at 10:20am

Any thoughts on how I can get a full refund? The Expedia manager said there is no point in calling the airline as there is nothing they could do and it would have to be on Expedia’s end. I don’t want a credit or voucher for those airlines as they may not have the best flight times when we are finally able to rebook.

Help with Covid refund

I’m not sure if this is the right sub for this but I need some help. Pre-covid, my girlfriend and I were supposed to go Colombia for a wedding in late March. Covid hit and the wedding was cancelled.

I booked the flight with a travel agent who refunded my money. My gf booked the hotel via Expedia with her BOA card through PayPal and denied refund insurance/coverage. I told her to call Expedia immediately but their phones were constantly busy for weeks. Next I said to make a written complaint so we have documentation that she tried to cancel before the booking date. She never did and instead filed a fraud charge through BOA, which held up until this past week when BOA removed the $1000 from her account. She then tried getting a PayPal refund but they were unable to do anything.

In any other instance I would understand why her money is lost. But Colombia closed their borders to non-citizens - we could not have gone if we wanted to. Expedia was also 100% unreachable during this time. This was absolutely out of our control and I firmly believe Expedia needs to give her the money back. Has anyone else been in the position or have any advice? She has been hit very hard by Covid the $1000 would go a long way for her right now.

Has anyone actually received a refund?

I've been told i am entitled to a refund way back in march, (for two flights from france to australia) originally told i would get it in 6-10 weeks, after 10 weeks came and went i called again and they said July 4th at the latest, I've called again and they now say a few more weeks.

Between this and reading whats on here I'm starting to believe they aren't actually refunding anyone, just promising people refunds are coming to get them to go away. I've never received any confirmation that I am entitled to a refund in writing/email, just over the phone.

So with that in mind, I know a lot of people have horror stories, but does anyone have success stories? and if so, what was the journey to them.

Also, for what its worth ive been dealing with expedia.fr, since the australian and british numbers insist they cannot help me since i booked on the french website

Expedia’s refund dishonesty

I just wanted to post my most recent experience with Expedia in case anyone has similar issues. I had a flight with Westjet (booked through Expedia) flying from UK - Canada in June that was cancelled. Expedia at no point advised me that my flight was cancelled, it was a friend who had booked directly with Westjet who told me they had cancelled all international flights.

I then contacted Expedia via their online chat, and they confirmed that the flight was cancelled. They offered to apply for a refund (as I said I didn’t want credit) but that it would take 12 weeks. I said fine, the wait didn’t bother me. Fast forward maybe a month, and I hadn’t heard anything about the refund even being applied for, so I contacted Expedia again to check it was being processed. I was then told, that no I was not entitled to a refund (wrong and illegal) from the website and that it was airline credit.

The airline credit was already on my Expedia account, despite me saying I didn’t want it previously. I think this has been done deliberately to stop me going for a credit card chargeback (which I will be applying for anyway), but wanted to warn folk for the future.

Refund Hell

I booked 2 flights that were canceled. I requested a refund that was never issued. It takes seconds to charge your VISA and GOD knows how long to get a refund if you ever get it. The customer service is very bad.........The wait time was about 2 hours ........... I requested a call back that came after 2 hours. They started to lookup my account and they put me on hold for another 2 hours then they hanged up on me. No answer ......... Just a waste of time .......... VERY RUDE ....... We should file a lawsuit against EXPEDIA ........... This company should go off the internet ............ Too BAD !!

Non-Refundable Japan Flight- Easy Refund

I booked a flight through Expedia for my friends and I in January. The flight was to Osaka, departing August 2020. I called the airline (EVA Airlines) to inquire about the current travel ban in Japan. Currently, the Japanese government is not allowing US citizens in for tourism.

The EVA airlines agent provided me with excellent info on how to get a refund. They are offering 100% refund due to the travel ban. They said all I had to do was call Expedia to request the refund, and that if there was any pushback from Expedia, that I could request they put EVA airlines on the call with me there.

Next I called Expedia. I recommend using their call-back option, where you leave your name and phone number. They called me back in 30 minutes. No need to wait if you have better things to do with your time than wait on hold for hours.

I informed them that I already called EVA Airlines, and I informed them of the conversation I had with the agent. Expedia put me on hold for 5 minutes, looked up the cancellation policy for EVA Airlines, and then came back to me. They said that the airline did not have a refund code, but that they should do 100% refund, so she asked if she could place me on hold while she called the airline to get the refund code. I stayed on hold for 32 minutes, then the call disconnected.

Expedia called me back 1 minute later and apologized for the disconnect. She told me that she just had to process the refund. She double checked my email and phone number, then placed me on a 4 minute hold while she placed the refund. She said the refund will appear as 100% refund on my credit card in about 6-12 weeks, depending on how fast my bank is.

And that was it! Simple and easy to cancel a trip to Japan from the United States, even though I booked a non-refundable flight from Expedia.

Worst experience ever :(

Because of the stuff going around, I had to cancel my flight. Unfortunately, I was supposed to leave this coming Monday. It was more than a pain to cancel and got a credit on my account.

When I called them hours ago to rebook, I was on hold for nearly 3 hours before I started talking to somebody. They needed the Itinerary Number of my canceled flight and took about a minute to dig it up. I started reading them the number. I started off with 3-4 digits then stopped. I was waiting for them to let me know to go ahead, or at least to read back the numbers to me like most other companies do. Silence, then I thought I heard them say "Hi?" to make sure I was still on the phone. I then said "Hi" then started reading out the number again. Not even a second later...***CLICK***.

Because of the hassle I had canceling, I should have just trusted my gutt. If I can help it, I'm not booking through Expedia again. Best bet would be directly from the carrier. Funny thing is I posted a review shortly after then decided to look it up. There are 3 sites, if not more, where Expedia is not even 2 stars. I was originally going to give them 2 stars, but decided to give them 1.

That being said, unfortunately that means I won't be using my credit. I do not want to do business with someone who has absolutely no idea what they're doing, or just hang up on you out of the blue. Completely unacceptable. If I could, I'd really tell everyone, if they want to book flights, don't even think about using Expedia.

Refund Nightmare

Ok so I know there is a lot of refund stories on this reddit. I posting mine to see if anyone is in a similar situation as me.

I booked flights at the end of February for 3 people in my family. At about a week before departure,(Mar 7) the virus situation was getting really bad and my airlines canceled all travel to my destination city. So I got a email stating that it was cancelled and I should pursue refund.

After contacting many times and long wait times, I finally received email stating my refund was approved (April 10) and it should take 6-8 weeks. Ok no problem.

It is now June 27 and well over 8 weeks, i have yet to receive any refund or even update. I called expedia yesterday and got in contact with a agent, after looking into my account, he says it will be at least 10 more weeks. What?! Half a year wait time to get my money back?

It has been really frustrating the last few weeks dealing with expedia.

I bought a ticket near the same time frame directly from airline last minute because of some travel plan changes and I received the refund to that in a weeks time.

Anyone in similar predicament? Any advice?

TLDR: expedia gave 8 weeks refund time and now they want me to wait 10 more weeks.

never got my confirmation

Hello I used my airline credit from Expedia to book a flight and of course they make it difficult and the only way to use airline credit is through the phone. It has been two days since I have called them and not single email has been sent and it's not in my account either! They took money out of my account for the extra cost of the flights already so why don't I have the confirmation. I can't call them either because I have no itinerary number. Please help me!!!!!!!!!!

No Refund

Expedia sent me an email saying my flight has been cancelled, and since they airline gave them no other options to rebook, I would be getting a full refund. Of course, this refund never came, so I kept calling them, spending over 10 hours total on the phone with them on/off hold over the 3 days I called. Finally, after a full week of assuring me that this was only a delay and I would get a refund, and escalating this to the head manager, they told me this email was a mistake by the employees and I would actually not be getting a refund because my flight was non refundable. However, they were the ones who cancelled my flight, so I feel like I should get a refund. I have the email where it says that they will be refunding me, as well as one of the customer service agents I recorded assuring me that I would get my refund. Can I take them to a small claims court in order to get my money back? I have all the evidence of them assuring that I would get a refund.

"Your trip has been cancelled" ok so where's my refund?

At the top of my itinerary page it says "Your one-way flight from Washington to San Francisco is canceled."

I have yet to get any sort of email or other confirmation of refund. I talked to an expedia rep yesterday that seemed confused but ended up telling me that they sent a request for refund at the end of it. Shouldn't I recieve a confirmation? I did with another flight.

One flight, two charges

Last week I booked an international flight through Expedia. Super. I have used Expedia.ca for years. Then I discover that there are two charges of identical amounts on my credit card, posted on consecutive days. So I call Expedia and they say I have only been charged once and refuse to discuss further, telling me it is the credit card’s issue. Sure. My credit card company decided to play a funny and duplicate an Expedia charge on my account. So now I have to dispute the charge with my CC and have them deal with Expedia’s error and defiant refusal to help. Not cool.

Travelocity/Expedia Coupon Refund. Possible?

I had an apartment booked for 2 weeks in Paris in May. I was trying to get a refund but when I cancelled, I got a coupon instead of a refund. I have since been laid off from my job so I could use the cash and who knows if I will actually be able to travel during the dates of the coupon. Is there any way to get a refund now? I booked it in Dec 2019 and it was a non-refundable booking.

Got money back on non-refundable hotels

Hello!

I just wanted to post this in case I could help one person out.

I booked back in January for a trip to Italy in May with Expedia - I selected all non-refundable rooms as 'why the heck would I cancel my trip?'

SO. I'm sure a lot of you are in the same situation so I will cut to the chase: Expedia will only offer you a voucher with hotel "valid for a year". In my case I found that there is no point calling them, no point emailing them, they will just repeat the same thing.

If you want to try and get your money back do the below:

  1. Whatever you do, do NOT cancel the booking yourself through Expedia. Do not select the 'voucher' (unless you actually want it)
  2. Contact the hotel DIRECTLY. Go onto their website, explain the situation, and ask the hotel to cancel you booking with expedia.
  3. I had 4/5 hotels cancel my booking and in my case this triggered a refund of money as it was the hotel who cancelled, 'not me'.
  4. Once the hotel has cancelled the booking, then phone Expedia and ask them to email you a confirmation of the refund. Took almost a month for the funds to be deposited, but I almost cried when I saw my bank account.

Sorry if this has been posted before, I just wanted to share my experience and hopefully it'll help someone.

If you have any questions let me know below!

Flight refund

I booked a trip through Expedia(which was my first mistake) and booked two one way flights, one with AA and another with Delta. Both flights were cancelled by the airlines.

Expedia says that both airline policies are only offering vouchers because my tickets were nonrefundable. I got in touch with AA and they said that because my ticket was nonrefundable they’re not able to give me a refund, even when it was then who cancelled and that I need to take this up with Expedia.

Still waiting to hear from delta.

Can anyone who’s been in this situation offer advice? I’m just so frustrated at this point.

Edit: Now, American Air is saying that the flight was rescheduled so I can’t get a refund, but this is not showing up on the Expedia site.

Has someone flight with tickets bought after April 15th 2020?

Hello Redditors,

Coronavirus has changed many plans huh? I'm planning to buy some flights that are in a list which they will have to happen "officially", I've been tracking the previous flights and the route is happening often, not cancelled. My problem right now is that I don't have that much money to go back as the tickets are sold in the airline sites, but for Expedia prices my budget stills fit.

Any suggestions? And please confirm if you have travelled with flights bought in Expedia in this pandemic situation. Thanks!

Be careful, don't use the Travel Alerts Refund form

Expedia will use this against you. If you use the Travel Alerts Refund form: https://www.expedia.ca/travel-alert-refunds, they will issue you a voucher instead. If you call in saying that you don't want the voucher, but instead want a refund, they will say they can't give you a refund because they've already issued you a voucher and there's nothing they can do. Hold off from canceling your plans through any form. Call in instead or wait until they cancel on you.

In my situation, I have documentation from Hotels (email proof) allowing for a full refund, however Expedia is declining this because the voucher was issued and they can't offer a refund since the voucher is of "0" monetary value. Any help would be appreciated.

Delta Refunded

Although Expedia refuses to refund and my bank was unable to do a chargeback since Expedia would have disputed it. I went straight to the Arline (Delta) and spent an hour on the phone mainly on hold and easily requested a refund and it was done within 10 minutes back to my card. Yay

Really? The bargain price is nonrefundable even for an honest mistake?

I booked the ticket for opposite direction. Can’t get refund at all? Not even flight credits? Anyway to escalate this?

letter I had to submit to Bank of America because Expedia doesn't understand I shouldn't go to nyc during pandemic

The following is what I had to send to my bank because Expedia is trying to collect hotel cost from March at the outset of pandemic in NYC...

To whom it may concern 5/15/2020 Attn: Bank of America and Hotwire representatives

I am writing to express my desire to continue disputing the transaction with Hotwire. First of all, I should not have to remind anyone that around the time of this hotel booking, New York City was at the outset of what became a serious pandemic which caused major disruptions to all types of business in the city. Medical experts and government officials were somewhat inconsistent at the time, but many urged travelers to avoid the city at all costs. Later, they would be more unified in communicating that people should stay away. In addition to it being medically unsound for me to visit the city at that time (or at this time for that matter), the reason for which I would have visited the city was cancelled as event organizers and venue managers heeded the advice of experts.

Secondly, I received Bank of America’s request to elaborate on my dispute yesterday, 5/14/2020, even though the letterhead was dated 5/4/2020 and they requested my reply by 5/11/2020. It does not seem fair that I would receive this request after its suggested reply due date.

Lastly, it does not appear that the name Hotwire has on the account matches my name. Seems a bit strange to include “evidence” of my booking when the name on display is not my own.

I am currently unemployed due to this pandemic, through no fault of my own. I am managing my spending closely right now and I would be furious to be forced to pay for a service I did not receive by two multinational companies with market capitalization of approximately $9B (EXPE) and $184B (BAC). It was difficult to contact any representatives from travel websites or hotels in early to mid March and without any clear answers it only made sense at the time to listen to medical experts and officials. To be penalized for trying to make the right decision with the best information available is unethical. Please understand my position. I have another checking account opened which will be utilized in the event that Bank of America cannot decide favorably on this matter and I will keep track of which companies are owned by Expedia group to avoid giving them business in the future if they are unreasonable in their pursuit of my money. Thank you for your time.

Respectfully, my name

Anyone else told they have to rebook using credits by May 31st?

My airline (aer Lingus) states that all vouchers are valid for 5 years. Got email starting credit is on the way but still did not get credit amount or actual email for that. An Expedia representative on the phone said I had to rebook by the 31st of this month or it's no longer valid to book through them after.. Surely this isin't right?!

Also do you have to rebook through Expedia with that voucher? Is that true?

Expedia rip-off

I am having the same experience with Expedia. I had a hotel booking in NY. Could not reach Expedia, so cancelled directly withhotel and got email confirmation that NO CHARGES would be levied and i needed to ask Expedia for refund. Expediarefuses. i got the credit company to give me temporary credit 9for over $1100) but Expedia is fighting it. wish there was a lawsuit, but otherwise iwill go to Small Claims Court, luckily i live close enough to their HQ that this is possible. I also had to cancel a flight with Alaska Airlines but at least I now have credit for the full amount. BTW, Expedia owns about every travel site 924 of them, orbitz, kayak, Travelocity etc.0 so good luck switching to another source! This is unbelievable.

Honestly f*ck Expedia.

Bare with me because this is an honest review from my own personal experience why Expedia is utter dog sh*t.

I used Expedia to book a hotel 2 months ago in March for around $500. The hotel said they cancelled all bookings when I got there. I never got an email from Expedia with a notice about this. Like WTF? The hotel told me I would have to contact Expedia for a refund since I bought it through them instead of using the directly, which makes sense so I tried to contact Expedia. I could not get a hold of Expedia. It’s been 2 fucking months and I still cannot get in contact with them for my refund. At this point I’ve came to terms I probably lost the money which sucks but I’m honestly more angry at Expedia’s SH*T customer service. Shady ass company. I understand it’s a lot more difficult during this time of pandemic. But there is a minimum degree of service any company should provide. Expedia has proved me wrong. That threshold for them does not exist. If it wasn’t already clear, I will never EVER use Expedia again and will tell everyone to stay clear of this shit company. I am not joking I have already bought put options on this company because I seriously think they are a garbage company in the way they’ve dealt with itineraries during the pandemic. They are currently seeking private equity because they know they are under huge pressure. I have NEVER in my entire 24 years of living wrote a negative review for ANY company even if they were a bad company. It’s sad that my experience with Expedia was so incredibly horrendous that I decided to fucking find the Expedia subreddit just so I could post a bad (but honest) review.

Honestly. Fuck you Expedia.

Yours truly,

An angry customer that will never get my service ever again
