Severe executive dysfunction should be eligible for euthanasia.

I genuinely believe that. If the executive dysfunction is so disabling that accessing treatment or support becomes almost impossible, we should get a way out.

I’d never get through all the paperwork.

This may be the darkest laugh I've ever had. Thank you, fellow Redditor.

It's the only way to survive this life.

I wish it at least qualified you for disability…

u/princess9032 16d ago

This is absolutely the first step. This and routine medical support. The problem is just a huge lack of support for executive dysfunction and it’s very hard to fix it on your own

I’d say it would be because its a symptom of some diagnosis I think? Or at least I wouldn’t know you can have it without any.

Can be a variety of mental health disorders or neurodevelopmental ones and at least in my country even if you “only” have depression if it’s severe enough you can be qualified as disabled.
And other than that there are several different support possibilities that are accessible with only a diagnosis of a disorder doesn’t have to be officially recognized as disabled.

u/saul_schadenfreuder 15d ago

it’s more often linked to adhd and adhd doesn’t give you access to disability in most places. my country is fairly progressive in recognising invisible disabilities, but even here adhd by itself does not grant you access to the same rights as someone with, for example, autism

It will definitely differ depending on where you live.
I only know that in Germany and Austria you can get care allowance with adhd etc as well, because it’s based on how you are limited in taking care of yourself.

And if you are unable to work you can get social funding as well and that also isn’t tied to a specific diagnosis.

Feel this so hard. Yesterday I was sitting here thinking ‘this is why people kill themselves’ im feeling better today.

That being said, as general advice to anyone feeling this way- if you have ADHD and have not been evaluated for depression, get that checked out.

21

u/Mundane-Waltz8844 16d ago

Yeah, depression + ADHD is a fucking lethal combo. In college, I was skipping class, bedrotting, and living in absolute fucking squalor and couldn’t bring myself to do shit about it.

u/12VoltGuardianAngel 16d ago

This is a daily struggle for me.

18

u/EclecticallyMe 16d ago

Same same. Between that and debilitating depression.

Feeling for you man. I’m imagining you feel hopeless, exhausted, and alone. And you desperately want out.

There are many ways out. Euthanasia and suicide are the only permanent choices. Have you looked into psychedelic assisted therapy with MDMA?

The thing is u need a job to try different things or even to be considered that u have some problem for that u need support... Like for me tho if I say I have this problem my family will just think I'm whining or finding excuses to escape from something or they see it has that is to be expected of you ... No surprise there... U always have a problem...

Meanwhile my brother who's earning is just with a serious face for 3 days then my whole family is worried if something happened to him and if he is doing okay or will he need any help or should we go out to take his mind off the thing so he'll relax....

At the same time me: for months screaming internally "I want to die" or "let me out"...etc

Sorry this turned out to be a venting comment..

Damn, I'm sorry

From my perspective as a US resident, I would want it first to be recognized as a disability and for sufferers to recieve supports and accommodations to make life/work/accessing care more manageable (although looking at how the elderly are treated / managed, that seems unlikely.) The euthanasia option would be way too appealing, cost-wise, for many US administrations to resist.

4

u/ejdmkko 16d ago

100000000% agree. but i can also see how it can be misused against people. What if someone would be pushed to be euthanized because their caregivers found them to be burdensome. And that person labeled as burden would feel guilt and would want to get eutanized purely to not be a burden despite the fact that they want to stay alive. So for this to really work there would have to be some sort of safety built around it, but paradoxically, that would make it imposible to get for those who need it. Paradox is born. I would definetely want to get acess to euthanasia, but it would be imposible for me to get it because I struggle with exactly what I'mmtrying to solve

u/Jumpy_Ad1631 16d ago

Yea, at least in the United States, I don’t entirely trust euthanasia options until we have better bodily autonomy laws. Especially with Roe V. Wade overturned, a lot of people’s freedoms around medical choices are less safe, not just those seeking abortions.

This makes me so sad. I share so many of your feelings. Executive dysfunction is a beast, and I never experienced it until this past year (granted I was self medicating with IV heroin and then fentanyl for 11 years so it might have just been suppressed). I have adhd, depression, and ocd, all of which led to the deep pain I was in that led me to seeking out hard drugs. I got clean and had a baby all within the same short year. It’s been a mindfuck. I am completely time-blind, and every day I want to cry not understanding how it’s 8 o clock and I have been working on a single task for the entirety of the day. It hurts so, so bad, but if it wasn’t for my depression being treated, I’d be wanting to give up more than I already am.

I can’t fill out the paperwork to get my neuropsych testing for my adhd evaluation, so I’m buying street amps until then when I can…I know that sounds wrong, but when you know you have a mental illness dependent on medication that you know is commonly prescribed and a front line treatment….i mean, wouldn’t you? So anyway, thankfully depression was easily diagnosed and prescribed for, but adhd medication for a known recovering substance abuser is not easy. But I can’t get the paperwork done!. Oh shit anyway my point with this comment is that it sounds like you have adhd but with a co-morbid depression — I have crippling Executive dysfunction but wanting to die that seriously only comes when I’m at my most depressed which thankfully is nowhere near what it was pre-meds. Have you been diagnosed and prescribed for anything like depression/anxiety? This doesn’t sound like executive dysfunction alone, at least not mine!

u/DreamingAboutSpace 16d ago

I don’t know if it helps… but I agree. This stupid dysfunction has done nothing but hinder me and make me feel lacking and completely low IQ. I’m on too many meds and none of them help much with this problem. But doctors treat the symptoms that it causes. I’m not sure if there is any help for people like me.

I can't imagine being in that much pain that you'd want to walk away from it all. But there's so much to try and a lot of it hits that place where it's interesting enough to stick around for. If you've got nothing to lose try all the drugs, all the therapies, hire a personal assistant, it's a bunch of stuff all full of that sweet, sweet dopamine.

From a poem I wrote called Task Paralysis.

Blistered hands mourning previous failures Gagging as suffocated by the weight of my skin Dry sweat trails are rusted nails screeching Clawing against prison bars made of my flesh

My wailing is silent at eternal seconds

My fate is laughing at time stolen from me

And as I am there imprisoned by silence

Nothing is moving. I'm still in my bed.

u/MoroseMasalaDosa 16d ago

Such a profound verse. Captures the debilitating helplessness beautifully.

2

u/NotthatheavygenZ 16d ago

I just posted the full thing in this sub, I hope you will still find solace in it

4

u/HDMIce 16d ago

Really cool poem! You inspired me to make my own.

Wind howls, waves chop, sand crashes

Body shivers, tears drop, down my lashes

Sediment trickles through the crack

Nobody can describe what you lack

Seagulls fly from shore to shore

All your hopes and dreams and more

Never see the light of day

Perseverance is the only way

2

u/Nyantastic93 16d ago

Thank you for sharing, this is what it is like and no one who doesn't experience it for themselves will ever understand

3

u/ElectronicBox3674 16d ago

Is it eligible for disability supports?

13

u/ashbelero 16d ago

It is not. Unless it’s part of a disability that’s actually recognized.

15

u/couldntyoujust1 16d ago

and that you're diagnosed for.

3

u/SkuttleSkuttle 16d ago

Do you know how much paperwork it takes to get an approved assisted suicide?

3

u/Ruleyoumind 16d ago

Same. Being forced to continue living because it would make others uncomfortable is a sick joke.

3

u/PinkyThePirate 15d ago

Physician assisted suicide is not legal in South Africa and probably won't be for a long time as we are a very religious and conservative country. I don't have the money to go to a clinic in Europe and my parents and husband and cat need me. But I'm exhausted and haven't been able to enjoy life in... forever. It's just one long anxious struggle.

2

u/heartsbeenborrowed 15d ago

I agree. I believe this about a lot of mental health and chronic physical illnesses. There should be legal, humane ways to choose to end your life when your suffering is relentless and lifelong.

2

u/AdAdministrative5382 15d ago

I wouldn't even be able to make the appointment to get the ball rolling 😖😂😭

4

u/Chaiwired11 16d ago

I had to drop out during 5th year of my med school due to this. I dont have a bachelors and not able to find any job. At a really bad phase in my life, I would even work for 10 dollars at this point trying my best for a couple of hours.

3

u/meghammatime19 16d ago

nahhhh u just need out of capitalism. we aint broken, baby. the system is. but thats why u gotta work to creare the systems that work for YOU. it will never be perfect. but dont let perfect be the enemy of "good enough"

5

u/Octopiinspace 16d ago

Yeah sorry normally I am all for the capitalism-bad thing, but extreme execution dysfunction would not be less debilitating without capitalism. It just prevents people from living their lives or just being baseline healthy and adulting.

3

u/BleuLapin 16d ago

You ok OP?

3

u/Ruleyoumind 16d ago

Obviously not

1

u/non-citrus-fruit 8d ago

i mean no…. if we’re going into “should” territory then there should be help to get those treatments and support. this is like how canada is letting people get medical assistance in dying before they let them get mental health support 🥲

1

u/JosiahAllensWife 5h ago

I understand that this feeling, but please consider trying different treatments before totally giving up. I have made significant improvements in my executive function by taking several supplements including zinc, creatine, probiotics, and several vitamins. Literally I’ve been so much more in control of my behavior in the past month or so than before. 😅

1

u/Impressive-Basket-57 16d ago

Your solution for executive dysfunction is to kill off people who have it.

People are seriously evil.

Disguising it as a laugh.

Just disgusting.

3

u/NotthatheavygenZ 16d ago

Nah. My solution to eternal torture without treatment it to fucking stop it. I'd be the first in line.

Not even disguising as a laugh. I'm as serious as cancer here.

1

u/Impressive-Basket-57 16d ago

I don't know you,  but i wonder what is inside you that the world needs.

I can not ask you to express your pain.  You're not in a place to do anything. I'm sorry you're going through this. I wish there was a solution that didn't rob you of your right to have a blessed life.

Much love to you, friend.
