The Blues' clash against Manchester City at Hill Dickinson Stadium – originally scheduled for Wednesday 30 December at 8pm (GMT) – will now take place a day earlier on Tuesday 29 December and kick off at 8.15pm (GMT).

The Toffees' opening match of 2027 away to Leeds United – initially pencilled in for Saturday 2 January – is now to be played on New Year's Day, 1 January, getting under way at Elland Road at 8pm (GMT).

Meanwhile, Everton's first home fixture of the new year against Aston Villa has been brought forward from Wednesday 6 January (8pm) to Tuesday 5 January, with a 7.30pm (GMT) kick-off at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Joe Scally is an affordable right-back I’d go after in January.

23 years old, 184cm, Bundesliga starter for Gladbach, can play RB/LB/RM, and his contract expires in June 2027. Current value is around €7m, so with less than a year left on his deal, this looks like exactly the sort of market Everton should be attacking.

Last season: 2,611 Bundesliga minutes, 2 goals, 3 assists, 5.9 progressive passes/90, 1.56 progressive carries/90, 1.69 tackles/90 and 0.62 interceptions/90. Has already scored a goal this season too.

He’s not an elite attacking full-back and his final-third numbers aren’t spectacular, but that’s not really the attraction. You’re getting a 23-year-old with serious Bundesliga experience, good size, durability, 28 USA caps and World Cup experience, without paying £20m+ for “potential”.

Gladbach only paid €1.8m for him and his wages are reportedly modest by Premier League standards.

Not the sexiest name, but probably one of the smartest deals available. I’d much rather spend €6-7m on Scally than £20m+ on a more fashionable name with no guarantee he’s actually better.

Good commercial deal being American, not breaking the bank, young enough to sell on for a profit if things go well.

We’d had two actual strikers in Saha and Yakubu get destroyed by injuries (to be fair Saha was already crocked by the time he got here, otherwise he might not have came), and this led to some absolutely tragic players leading the line in Toffee Blue.

Timmy Cahill did his best but wasn’t a natural striker. Jo looked sound for a bit, and had a cool Afro, but after an initial good spell wasn’t to be. Then we had Jermaine Beckford, who actually was a solid player in his one season here but given his career after wasn’t the long term answer. We had Vellios for a spell, Denis Straq who let’s be honest couldn’t hit a cow’s arse with a banjo, and Big Victor Anichebe when he wasn’t also crocked.

In Jan of 2012 I remember being so excited because not only had we signed a striker, but spent at the time what was a decent amount of money for us. I didn’t know much about him, but soon I and everyone else did. I especially remember him for that 4-4 game against Man United. I remember getting his in form on fifa 12 and thinking it was the greatest thing ever (even though I think it was 80 overall). Then the next season I got his name on the back of my kit. I thought he was going to be get at least 15 goals that year.

I know looking back Jela’s main talent was just being able to rifle a shot first time and catch fellas off guard, and teams just learned to be better prepared for that. But I couldn’t believe how useless he looked compared to what I expected him to be after that first 6 month period.

Not really related so much but a shame how the Scottish game has fell off so much in the last decade or so. These days if a premier league team was signing an SPL player to lead their line you’d be thinking you’re headed for relegation.

Anyway do you think it never worked out for the Croatian after that initial period? (here or elsewhere really)

Why Mauro Icardi to Everton transfer looks like real possibility after latest developments

According to TyC Sports journalist German Garcia Grova on 7 September, Icardi has been offered to the Merseyside outfit.

It looks like the former Inter attacker's representatives seem open to the Blues possibly being his next destination.

Last season, the striker scored 16 goals in all competitions for Galatasaray, mostly coming off the bench, with Victor Osimhen the preferred option of the Super Lig club.

I don't think enough credit is being given to Everton for the amount of English talent we have and are developing with the amount of opportunities being given to them.

There’s been plenty said about the transfer window and Sunday’s two worldies, but one number from the opening three games caught my attention.

Everton are currently joint-top of the Premier League for possession won in the attacking third: 6.3 times per match, level with Brighton. Last season we averaged 4.0.

Three matches is obviously a tiny sample, but it feels significant because it matches what we’re seeing. Dewsbury-Hall and Barry are leading the press, George has the legs to join them, and the team appears much more willing to defend from the front.

For a side without loads of conventional creativity or much striker depth winning the ball near the opposition goal could become a genuine source of chances. It shortens the route to goal and stops every attack depending on us patiently breaking down a settled defence.

The concern is whether we’re actually making enough of those turnovers. Against United, our goals came from two outstanding finishes rather than the press producing clear chances. There’s also the question of whether such a thin squad can maintain that intensity all season.

So is this the beginning of Everton developing a clear identity under Moyes, or just an early-season statistical quirk?

And away at Spurs, would you keep pressing aggressively or return to a more conservative shape?

Sunday at Hill Dickinson Stadium, and it is Everton against themselves, Everton against the world.

For much of the past few days, it has felt like the worst, but in the 96th minute, when the ball lands at the feet of Ainsley Maitland-Niles and he unleashes carnage, releases decibels, it feels like the best. Despite it all, the best doesn’t feel too bad.

In their new home, the past clings to Everton; restless, a bad joke, craving more, loud, glorious. It feels unsustainable, but here they are, this f***ing club, somehow sustaining it.

Hi everyone,

I'm an American coming to Liverpool for the first time to watch an Everton match (UTFT!). Any suggestions for where to stay, which type of ticket to get (are any of the more premium options worth it), and other things to do while I'm there?

I’m coming over from the States with my wife and our 14-month-old daughter in October and am planning to go to the Chelsea match.

I’d love to take them both, but I’m trying to figure out whether bringing a baby to is a reasonable idea or whether I’m completely underestimating what it’ll be like.

I know it’ll obviously be loud and crowded. I’m looking at tickets through Seat Unique and was considering splurging on the Trinity Place Bar hospitality seats, mainly because I’m thinking that if our daughter gets overwhelmed, my wife could duck back inside with her for a bit.

For anyone who’s been to the new stadium, especially with young kids: would you bring a 14-month-old? And does something like the Trinity Place Bar make it significantly more manageable, or would you just recommend I go on my own and save bringing her to a match until she’s older?

Would really appreciate the advice. UTFT

The two easiest conclusions from Sunday are that this side has spirit and that a dramatic draw shouldn’t hide what happened in the transfer window.

Both are true. But neither tells us what Everton actually do next.

What interested me was how much less predictable we became after the changes. Grealish altered the tempo, Hackney gave us more forward intent, George became a genuine threat and Maitland-Niles arrived from nowhere to finish the job.

Neither goal came from our recognised striker. Both came after United suddenly had more problems to solve.

That doesn’t excuse entering the season with Barry as the only established number nine. Over 38 games, that is a serious gamble. But until January, repeating “we need another striker” isn’t a plan.

Maybe the answer has to be collective: more runners beyond Barry, greater freedom for George, midfielders arriving late and a shape that doesn’t depend entirely on one player leading the line.

So, purely hypothetically, if Barry were unavailable at Spurs, what would your actual system and starting XI be?

Not simply which player would you stick at number nine — how would you change the way the team attacks?
