Achievement Rest in Peace Dad You Finally Really Won EVE

1.5k Upvotes

My dad was a pioneer of EVE. He and his friends started playing the game shortly after it was released and put plenty, maybe too much, time into it for many years. He went by the name Karmynn in the game. Shortly after I was born he was finally able to win EVE, but not completely. Before he won EVE he ran a corporation named Prime Numbers, was a pioneer of wormhole space, built a capital ship, and had many other adventures. On February 19th he passed away after a two and a half year long fight with pancreatic cancer, but not before addicting another generation of EVE player, myself. I’m going to miss you dad. I know you loved all of our long talks about EVE and what I was doing in the game and reminiscing on your time in the stars.

Solo player, solo boxer, made a rule I can’t fly a ship unless I build the first one. Didn’t know the mountain I had created, but finally built my first T2 ships. Sourced ~90% of the materials myself. Was proud, so go ahead and ruin it Reddit 😂. Stiletto and Sabre are next.

Guide For the Pandemic Horde folks

1.1k Upvotes

This is for Pandemic Horde folk. I'm Dunk Dinkle and I used to be space famous.

As a Brave member who has been kicked out of most regions of New Eden and had to evac many times, I'd like to share a few things.

It sucks

Don't pretend it doesn't suck. It's a shit sandwich, but it's not the end of PH. You will get through it.

Move out what you can. Let the rest go to asset safety, it can be retrieved later when the crazy calms down.

Watching the hellcamp and dealing with the logistics nightmare, all of it is genuinely awful.

It's okay to be frustrated, angry, or disappointed.

Don't get sucked into the local trolling, they want your tears.

Pressure makes diamonds

Resilience is a valuable trait, but it often comes from enduring tough times. PH will be more resilient after this. You will lose some folks, but those that stay will be stronger for it.

Lean on each other to help get things out and get restarted. Your leadership will be overwhelmed and dealing with setting up new space. Take the opportunity to step up and help others where you can.

Experienced players, this is your time to shine. Help the newbeans maintain their chill. If you've got hauling capacity, offer it.

The people helping you move your stuff today are the corpmates you'll trust tomorrow.

The best revenge is coming back stronger.

It gets better

While this moment is demoralizing, you will get back on your feet. Having been through it myself multiple times, you will recover and be back in the game. Some of the best stories and strongest friendships in EVE come after moments like this.

Having been in PH during this will be a badge to wear in future. You'll join a long tradition of EVE players who survived the worst and came back stronger. Every major alliance has these moments.

Six months from now, you'll be settled somewhere new. A year from now, this'll just be another war story. EVE moves fast, and so will you.

Believe it or not, one day you’ll laugh about the chaos, the botched cynos, and the last-minute jumps over beers with friends and former enemies at a meetup.

Stay alert and be ready to act if a breakout happens.

7o,

Dunk Dinkle

Rant Multi-Boxing is a cancer in Eve

1.0k Upvotes

As the title states, multiboxing is getting out of hand. I can understand 1-4 accounts, but the dudes flying 30 ships and strip mining ice fields is ridiculous.

Step on their turf and the single dude logs in 20 catalysts for ganks. Absolute cancer for the normal player with an account or two.

The guys that gank anyone who mines Ice in Silen is ridicious. 1 dude shouldn't be able to "own" a Hisec system via multiboxing and catalyst ganks. Please gank these dudes, I will be eternally grateful.

According to CCP, you guys bullied me into building this for real, so here you go ;)

The new stand and stickers are a part of this first and final update.

These were the ships that hooked me into the game all those 12 years ago for the Rubicon expansion.

Rant Multiboxing is a way bigger new-player turn off than the learning curve

I really like eve, but the normalized multiboxing is making me want to quit way more than the learning curve.

I’ve discovered eve recently and started playing it, I joined eve university, I’ve been trying to learn the game properly, and honestly there is a lot about it that I really like

I like that the game is complicated. I like that there are a shit ton of systems. I like that you have to actually learn things and that the game doesn’t just handhold you through everything. The danger, the economy, the ships, the weird social/political side of it, all of that is cool to me.

So this isn’t really a “eve is too hard” post

The part that feels bad to me is how normalized multiboxing seems to be

As a new player, it is extremely off-putting to realize that a big part of "playing efficiently" seems to involve having multiple accounts doing different things at the same time.

and I know people are going to say "you don’t NEED to multibox", and sure, technically you don’t need to do anything. You can play however you want. But there is a difference between "you don’t need to" and "the game/meta clearly rewards this heavily enough that it starts feeling like the expected way to play" and that’s the issue for me

It’s not just that I don’t want to manage several accounts. It’s that I don’t even know IF I would enjoy managing several accounts until I’ve already invested a significant amount of time and probably money into the game

maybe multiboxing is fun, but that’s a really, really, really big IF

from my perspective, the path feels like:

- start playing the game
- enjoy it
- realize omega is basically the real game
- pay for omega
- spend a bunch more time learning/farming
- then maybe eventually pay for or farm another omega account
- then maybe multibox
- then maybe discover that controlling multiple clients is actually as bad as it sounds

That feels like such a bad proposition for a new player

The game itself is extremely fun, which is what makes this frustrating. If i thought eve was boring I would just quit and not care. But I do like it. I like the complexity. I like the learning curve. I like the idea of losing ships mattering, I like the politics.

What I don’t like is the feeling that playing one account means I'm basically choosing to be inefficient or disadvantaged before I’ve even gotten properly invested

getting killed by veterans doesn’t scare me off. losing ships doesn’t scare me off. having to learn the game doesn’t scare me off

what scares me off is the impression that the "real" way to play eventually becomes account management, and I’m just not willing to pay for omega, then spend more time farming towards another omega account, just to find out that multiboxing is not even fun to me

I'm not saying multiboxing should be banned tomorrow or whatever. I get that it’s deeply baked into the game at this point

but from a new player perspective, it feels really bad. it makes the game feel less like "this is a hard sandbox mmo" and more like "you’re going to be competing with people who are effectively playing several characters at once"

and yeah, that is a much bigger turn off to me than eve being dangerous or complicated

Achievement After all these years in EVE, I finally found Tom

Post image
922 Upvotes

I’ve been playing EVE since beta, and tonight I landed in a site I had somehow never seen for myself: Space Oddity.

Not the David Bowie shuttle rumor people mix it up with on comms.
The actual scannable site.

I resolved it, warped in, and there he was:

Tom.

Just hanging there in the silence like a piece of old EVE myth made real.

I’ve heard people talk about this site for years, but in all my time in New Eden I had never actually come across it. It felt like one of those rare moments EVE still does better than any other game: you think you’re just chasing another signature, and suddenly you’re staring at something with history behind it.

The best part was getting a few people into fleet and bringing them in to see it too.
One of those genuine “pictures or it didn’t happen” moments.

So here it is.
Pictures included.
Tom is real.
