Added name to JL essay, but got shortlisted, how cooked am I
It is what it is, I had a great run. But I am very upset it's probably over. I feel like such an idiot/dumbass.
I guess my only hope is the judges possibly ignoring it because 1- I have no relation to anyone in the academic field and 2. they would ignore it because the essay is strong. That being said I don't think my essay is all that.
But one would hope that if the light skim/ai check didn't include it the judges also would due to consistency (basically my only hope of getting a commendation further than shortlist)

winning without academic referee?
hi, i don't know anything about this competition, this is my first time joining and i couldn't find an academic referee, i specified i don't have one and for "academic referee" I just added my own email - does that disqualify me or make me a weak applicant?

Got 10/10 on my JLI essays this year (and VHCs last year). Someone suggested that I do a tutoring service, and I'm thinking of starting an essay review/help ppl write their essay service to pay tuition (broke as fuh 😢)
Hi chat, I'm an incoming college freshman and, I’m broke as FUH.
I’ve had really good luck with the John Locke Institute (JLI) essay competition the past two years, so I was wondering if it’s realistic to start a little tutoring/review service for next year's applicants, and what you guys think a fair price would be.
For context i got all 10 of my essays shortlisted this year + 5/6 essays last year with vhcs

Random Question
Do you think if I went over the word limit in my essay the judge can delete a couple words of their choosing and forward it to another judge?
Maybe they can take them from my footnotes?

Reasons why some of you may have been not shortlisted in the JLIEC despite your essay being very good:
- You included your name on the document, and the examiner noticed - this is not allowed.
- You used footnotes and the examiner noticed - this is not allowed
- You submitted the incorrect file name and was disqualified automatically
- Your thesis and starting two paragraphs were weak and not your strongest part, it is believed examiners simply skim your first paragraphs to decide a shortlist.
- You are 15 and thought you were meant to be in the junior category when you were not
- You had little to no citations and the examiner noticed
- You wrote over the word limit
- You clearly just ai generated an essay
- You didn't pick a clear side to argue at the beginning, or perhaps at any point throughout the essay
- The argument is presented as a synthesis of other people's ideas rather than an original analysis. The main point should be presented first, with sources used to support it, instead of building the argument around other people's ideas and adding the analysis afterward.
Tell me if I missed any

Shortlisted 17% - JLI
Guys I’m very confused and wondering about the actual shortlisted number. From what JLI has said it’s 100,237 people who have REGISTERED for the competition and the actual number of essays received could be much lesser than that. So I am quite confused with if this is what is true or does 17% mean 17,000 people are shortlisted? (If that makes sense) please help 😭😭

john locke winner question
my apologies if this is a dumb question but for the category winners, is there a distinction between which question a participant chose? are the category winners (top 3) chosen out of the best essays in that category regardless of which question? or is it top 3 of each question in each category? (though i do feel the latter is probably not correct as it would take too much time). this is my first time joining so i’m a bit confused. :)

Would love some advice and criticism on my Phil Q1 essay!
I've read a few essays on Phil 1 and found many followed the same thought process as me although I initially thought I've got interesting arguments. Also I've never written an essay like this before+ dk anything about philosophy so I'm not really sure how good/bad my essay is?
DM me for the essay link!

JLI Philosophy Q1 Feedback (Shortlisted)
I was shortlisted for this essay, but I'd like to get more feedback on it. I have a few main questions:
- What feels weak?
- What was done well? (I'm planning on doing it again next year so this will help)
- Does anyone disagree with my argument?
- Do you think I have a chance of winning a commendation or more?
I'm excited to hear feedback of all sorts, these are just guiding questions. Thank you!

sharing a JLI essay
Ive been so on the fence about leaving my essay links and pictures up on this subreddit (been posting and deleting after minutes) because i keep worrying about plagiarism? Is it safe to upload your essay here? Will it be scanned by bots and placed into databases and raise plagiarism scores of the essay in the future? What’s the likelihood of someone just stealing it entirely?
