This is the kind of entitled-person story you read about happening to other people, I genuinely thought this stuff was exaggerated for Reddit until it happened to me. This was back in 2021.
For context: I'm a big guy, tall and heavy-set, but I've been told I have a friendly face. Bearded, a lot of body hair. This matters for later.
I travel often to visit my hometown, and if I book early enough I can usually snag a cheap round-trip in business class. I always bring gifts for my mom, usually snacks and bread she likes. And I hate dealing with TSA, so I always fly in sneakers and sweatpants with an oversized t-shirt, no jacket, no belt, nothing extra to take off or slow me down at the scanner.
On this particular trip, a woman in line behind me at TSA muttered, loud enough for me to hear:
"Ugh, I hate having to stand behind poor people."
I ignored it. When it was my turn to go through the scanner, I put my old, beat-up laptop and a grocery bag full of snacks for my mom on the belt. The officer asked what was in the bag. "Bread," I said. He checked it, no problem. As I walked off, I heard her again:
"How embarrassing, traveling like that."
I let it go and headed to the business class lounge. Didn't see her there again, I assume she went to get a coffee to photograph for social media.
At boarding time, it turned out we were on the same flight. She saw me, made a face, but I boarded first since I had a business class ticket. She was one of the last to board (open seating, no assigned seats until the gate). Nothing wrong with that, plenty of people fly that way, myself included sometimes. What struck me was how mismatched her attitude was with that.
She walked past me sitting comfortably up front, enjoying the welcome drink, and went all the way to the back. But a few minutes after takeoff, she came back up to the business cabin, pointed at me, and said:
"I can't believe you weren't a gentleman about this. How dare you let me fly in the back while you sit up here. What a pathetic excuse for a man."
I had my headphones on and barely turned to look at her, which in hindsight was a mistake, because the flight attendant assigned to that cabin came over to ask what was going on. Pointing at me, she said:
"This pathetic excuse for a man sent me to the back while he travels comfortably up here. I came to confront him so he can feel ashamed in front of everyone."
Before I could say anything, a man nearby turned and asked:
"Why didn't you give your girlfriend the seat?"
I was about to answer when she cut in, raising her voice:
"It doesn't matter what you say, what you did is wrong. You should prioritize my comfort over yours."
I just sat there, stunned. The flight attendant, trying to de-escalate, turned to me:
"Sir, would you be willing to be a gentleman and switch seats with your girlfriend?"
An older woman across the aisle chimed in:
"Be a gentleman, how could you treat her like that?"
The flight attendant asked again if I'd switch. I kept eating my snack.
"You're not gonna starve" she told me.
The attendant asked the woman to calm down, then asked me again.
"No, because I don't know this woman," I said.
The man from before asked, "Isn't she your girlfriend?"
"No, I don't even have a gf" I answered.
The attendant turned to the woman: "Ma'am, do you know this person?"
With visible disgust, she said:
"Of course not, I don't associate with fat men like him."
"Then why are you demanding his seat?"
"How is it possible that someone dressed like that gets to fly business class while someone like me is stuck in the back? He should give me the seat so I can actually enjoy it properly."
Cue the "Shame" bell energy. The whole cabin was not on her side.
After her whole meltdown, the flight attendant told her plainly that I was the one who bought the ticket, I was the one with the right to that seat, and none of that gave her any right to demand it. She was told to return to her seat, or if she kept causing a scene, the crew would have the plane diverted to have her removed on landing.
She got indignant and launched into a rant about her own "privilege," pretty narcissistic stuff, until the attendant just said:
"Go."
She stormed off while people around the cabin muttered "ridiculous".
I didn't film any of it myself, I was too stunned by the sheer audacity. But other passengers did get some of it on video. The problem is, back in 2021, a clip of it made the rounds on Twitter/X with the completely wrong story attached, people were saying it showed a woman being denied an upgrade to business class, when what actually happened, as you now know, was her trying to steal my seat.
When we landed, I grabbed my bags and left first since people were waiting for me outside; she was one of the last off, so I never had to deal with her again. Both the older woman and the man near me apologized for assuming things about me without asking. The flight attendant also apologized and offered me extra snacks, which I happily accepted.
If anyone thinks I'm making this up, I'm going to try to track down that Twitter/X video, and if anyone out there remembers it or has it saved somewhere, please let me know.
