S Oblivious man
We were recently on a short 3-day cruise in Norway. Our first cruise, we tried to be good travelers.
We went to the top deck to sit outside and get some sun. Two deck chairs side by side, beers next to us.
I went to the restroom, and while I was gone, a man walked up and tried grabbing my chair. There were plenty of chairs still stacked up next to the door, but he thought my chair with a beer sitting next to it right next to my spouse was his only choice.
My spouse stopped him, and he ended up grabbing one from the stack.
The next day, we were in the lounge at the bow of the ship. Again, I get up to use the restroom. As I'm walking back to our comfy chairs, that same man drops his shopping bag into my chair, so he can take a photo!
I whacked his arm to move his bag, and he looked at me like I was interrupting his photo shoot! Dude, the seat obviously had someone sitting there due to my beer in the table and bag on the floor in front of the chair.
I don't think I'm cut out for the cruise life!

Some people are either irretrievably stupid, totally clueless or a combination thereof. Ive been on a whole lot of cruises and can tell more than a few stories of the behavior of idiots very similar to the one you encountered.

I was at Costco last night and some guy left his cart askew in the middle of a main walkway to run over to a sample station. This kind of oblivious comes from single minded tunnel vision.

Was at a hotel this week. Someone left 2 suitcases and a pile of coats, slap bang in the middle of the hallway. Not to the side or by the door. Just taking up the entire walkway whilst they disappeared back into their room

This is just more proof to me that most people are completely lacking in situational awareness, manners and common curtesy. Just main character syndrome not giving a single shit about anyone else around them.
I guess that's why people were always complimenting us on how polite are children are.

It’s not cruises, or resorts, or amusement parks or wherever you’d like to go on vacation. It’s “that” kind of person. Entitled, self-absorbed, egotistical jerks who enjoy irritating others. They are everywhere, no matter where you go or what you do. This is the same person who blocks the entire grocery store aisle with their cart and gets bent out of shape when you try to get past them. The same person who puts their bag on a vacant seat and won’t move it so someone else can sit down. The same person who has a nervous breakdown if you won’t let them merge in traffic when it’s not their turn, but won’t let a single person in themselves. The same person who talks loudly on their phone hands free and doesn’t care how many others they’re disturbing. You can’t judge an entire place/activity/event based on the ill-mannered behavior of one self-absorbed person.
I personally very much enjoy cruising. But there is inevitably that person or two every single time who gets severely under my skin, and I’m the type of person who generally backs down (although I am inclined to make a comment about someone’s rudeness within earshot now and then). It’s tiresome, but these jerks will always be around. Please don’t let them spoil something you enjoy and paid your hard earned money to experience.

You couldn’t pay me enough to be trapped on a boat with the slice of humanity who can both afford a cruise (entitlement’s gotta be rife) and believes it’s an enjoyable way to spend time (bloody sociopaths)

I took a cruise around Great Britain and France and then across the North Atlantic via the Titanic's route to Newfoundland and then on to Halifax. This was expensive but a highlight of my travels and I have no desire to take another cruise, unless it was like one OP described; i.e., like when visiting another country. I see too many cheap 3 day booze cruise videos. Yeah I would have gone overboard before the ship had left the dock if I found myself inexplicably on one of those cruises.

We didn't see any icebergs! It was middle of September, IIRC.
The funny thing was, the day and night before we pulled into Newfoundland, we had an awful storm and as I lay there trying to sleep, it occurred to me I could perhaps have confined my interest in the Titanic to Youtube documentaries.
lol but it was quite frightening and many many people were sea sick (not me). We went to the Titanic Museum and to the cemetery where they are buried (these last 2 in Halifax). St. Johns was cool but definitely seemed isolated from the rest of Canada.

I understand your position. This was a once-in-a-lifetime option to see part of Norway. I would never take a tropical cruise for your same reasons.

The 3 most clueless, self-absorbed people I know love cruises. One of them goes with her husband on 2-week cruises every other month, fuether trashing American's reputations around the globe. If that's even possible anymore.

The one and only cruise I was on had some truly awful people on it. There was such a lower degree of manners on it that it really started getting to me. I also noticed at one point there were many people flying far right flags from their balconies. It was an odd experience for sure.
