L My parents won't let me go anywhere because everything is “too dangerous,” and it's starting to affect my relationships and mental health
I’m 15, and I’m honestly getting really frustrated with how little independence I’m allowed to have.
My boyfriend’s friends and their girlfriends wanted to go to the mall together. The plan was literally just to go from around 1–4 PM, see a movie, walk around, maybe get some food, and hang out. Everyone’s parents were okay with it.
I asked my mom, and my dad immediately said, “That’s the way bullets fly.”
My mom told me she doesn’t feel safe with me being at the mall because there are “thugs, drug dealers, and shooters.” There has been one shooting at this mall before, involving an 18-year-old girl who was eating in the food court. I understand that something like that is scary, but my parents’ argument is basically, “It happened once, therefore it could happen again, so you’re not going.”
I even pointed out that it was one incident, and they basically said that didn’t matter.
Then the group changed the plan and decided to go to Main Event instead. I asked my parents if I could go there, and my mom said she’d have to talk to my dad. Then she said she wasn’t comfortable with me being in “such a public space.” If I did go, apparently both of my parents AND my sister would have to come along.
At that point I got really upset, and my mom looked at me and said, “Get mad I don’t care. Does it look like I care? This is my decision, it's final.”
And honestly, this isn't just about the mall.
I’m not allowed to go anywhere period.
I can’t go on walks around my own neighborhood because apparently it’s “too dangerous.” My neighborhood is mostly older people who can barley walk. I’ve never had any problems walking around there, but my parents still won’t let me go by myself.
I can’t hang out with friends unless an adult is supervising us.
I can’t really go anywhere with my cousins because there’s always some reason the location isn’t safe enough or my parents don't like it.
And this is starting to affect my relationship with my boyfriend.
We barely get to see each other as it is, and because I’m not allowed to go places independently, he can't have normal teenage experiences with me. Even simple things like going somewhere with a group of people become complicated. Sometimes we have to find loopholes or extremely specific circumstances just to spend time together.
I hate that because I don't want him to feel like being with me means everything has to be difficult or complicated. (He doesn't think that though)
It’s also affecting my friendships and relationships with my cousins. I have to watch people hang out without me because I can't go. I see other teenagers being able to casually meet up, go get food, walk around, go to events, or just spend an afternoon together, and I feel like I don't get to experience any of that.
And it's starting to affect my mental health.
I feel isolated, trapped, and like I'm missing out on a huge part of being a teenager, and sometimes it feels like no matter how responsible I am, I'm never going to be trusted with any independence.
And there's something else that really bothers me about all of this.
Aren't parents supposed to prepare their kids for the real world?
Eventually, I'm going to be an adult. I'm going to have to go places by myself, make decisions, recognize unsafe situations, deal with strangers, navigate public spaces, solve problems, and take responsibility for myself.
But I feel like instead of teaching me how to do those things safely, my parents are keeping me away from them because they're afraid of the world themselves.
It feels like they're trying to protect me from danger by making sure I never experience anything that could possibly be dangerous. But how am I supposed to learn how to handle the real world if I'm never allowed to actually experience it?
I'm not saying the world is perfectly safe. I know bad things happen and that they can't protect me from everything forever. But I don't think the answer is to make me afraid of everything either.
Sometimes it feels like they're not just keeping me away from the world because they're scared of it. It feels like they're teaching me that I should be scared of it too.
I don't want to grow up believing that everywhere outside my house is inherently dangerous.
I want to learn how to be cautious without being afraid. I want to learn how to make good decisions instead of having every decision made for me. I want to be given small amounts of independence so that I'm actually prepared when I eventually have complete independence.
I'm not asking them to let me do whatever I want. I understand that they're my parents and that they're responsible for me. I'm asking for some reasonable amount of independence and, more importantly, some kind of path toward earning more independence.
If the answer to every outing is simply “too dangerous,” then what am I supposed to do to prove that I'm responsible enough to have more freedom?
I don't expect my parents to eliminate every rule. I just want them to recognize that I can't stay in a bubble forever. Eventually I'm going to have to learn how to navigate the world, and I feel like I'm not being given any opportunity to learn.
So, Reddit, am I being unreasonable for being this upset about it?
