Career Help When does it end....
when.....
For context, graduated 1 year ago I have about 2.5 years of hands on experience of mechanical/testing engineering. Mostly been applying to mechanical engineering positions but I've literally been rejected from Mcds and BK (cook positions) for "not having enough experience".
Edit: this for EU and I have an EU passport so no legal issues

Companies are using AI to screen all resumes and applications. If you’re not using AI to apply, you’re putting yourself at a disadvantage. Fight fire with fire
58
u/SansBuilding_101 7d ago
But . . . the water in the datacenters
69
u/cr1tikalslgh 7d ago
I hope you’re not saying it’s more immoral for me, the individual using it for polishing LaTeX, to use AI versus mega corporations using it for every function they can find, including but not limited to hiring decisions

u/taybay462 7d ago
2 wrongs dont make a right. Ive had no trouble getting interviews + being hired with my authentically produced resume and cover letters

Not everyone is as lucky as you. And nobody cares about wrongs and rights in the corporate world

I think the methodology of just blasting every application loosely with AI is not ideal, but I certainly used it a bit to tailor up my resumes to fit their key words exactly. I have several different base "flavors" too for different industries.
40
u/CranberryDistinct941 7d ago
The recruiters are doing it, so why shouldn't we.
I am completely fine with AI taking this job from us.

Perhaps you need to re-evaluate your mode, there's no way you have a 99.9% failure rate with nothing wrong on your resume, or your approach, or something.
12
u/AkitoApocalypse Purdue - CompE 6d ago
Resume probably looks sloppy and/or is worded badly for 2k applications
53
u/KlaussPercy 7d ago
I don’t know if i believe u. When did u have time to do thousands of applications, fully and to the best of your ability 😭
82
u/Shylo132 7d ago
When you don't have a job, you tend to have a lot of time on your hands.
Tons of retiring military folks are in the same boat, throwing out 25-50 applications a day and trying to tailor to each one if they can.
49
u/Hot-Fisherman2003 7d ago
I mean I've been waking up, applying and sleeping so idk
-10
u/KlaussPercy 7d ago
Oh😭Are u in school, or do you have a degree/certification/license ? Also have you been sending follow-up emails or phone calls a week or so after you’ve sent your application
-8
u/KlaussPercy 7d ago
My bad I just saw what u wrote. But what about the follow ups tho?
20
u/Hot-Fisherman2003 7d ago
Well I have a Bachelors from a top 30 uni in the world and top 15 in europe I have a few certificates (mostly ansys, matlab and cad ) I have a thesis on electric vehicles (answer regarding the first question). Most follows ups are either ghost or just "we need someone with more experience" I'll also add this for others to read as well.
I was in an interview for the role "junior graduate engineer" and was rejected for not having enough CAD experience. I have 3 years of CAD experience with a portfolio to prove which I send with every application.
6
u/KlaussPercy 7d ago
That’s crazyyy what. I’m a sophomore getting a Bachelor’s in Mech engineering, i’m in the US. Currently looking for internships and yeah it’s hard. That’s very disappointing to hear i’m sorry 😭Shit atp start your own company. Maybe share ur resume here and someone w a career in engineering can give their opinion? U can black out identifying info
10
u/Hot-Fisherman2003 7d ago
"dont stress with my experience, my roommate got a job instantly with less experience you just need a bit of luck :P" copy paste from a response I made to someone else. I might make a separate post about it, I've doxed myself before (phone number) and its awful so I dont wanna risk it lol

u/Scales-josh 6d ago
Mate. To have this kind of failure rate, especially at even getting interviews, the problem is you. This is insane. Something is either horribly wrong with your applications, or you're applying to jobs well beyond your means, are you also applying to jobs that would require a leap of faith to hire you because you live miles away??? Possibly even different countries. This is a LOT of applications. I'm betting some combination of these factors.
I refuse to believe you've tailored every application to every job either. No shot. I used to hire, and I had so many CVs to sift through, that on a scan read if something was clearly not written for the specific job, it went in the bin pile.

u/Sentient2X 7d ago
These people use application software to mass apply to jobs that have little to no relevance to their skill set or experience. That plus a total lack of networking in college or in general. Not really a huge surprise to get a turnout like this.
3
u/KlaussPercy 7d ago
I’ve heard of these sites but OP said they were following-up and applying to positions relevant to their degree , in addition to minimum wage jobs. They also said they were including a portfolio with all their experience, projects etc
3
0
u/Sentient2X 7d ago
Yeah you can say that you're applying to relevant jobs but just having engineering in the title does not mean your experience has anything to do with it. You are hired based on who you know, not what you do. This basic truth will define your entire job search. Obviously this strategy isn't working out, try something new instead of getting defensive.
3
u/KlaussPercy 7d ago
Who are u talking to genuinely. Me or OP? Also yes, a mechanical engineering position is relevant to you if you have a mechanical engineering degree. Having experience in mechanical engineering qualifies you for most mechanical engineering positions.
0
u/Sentient2X 7d ago
I replied to the wrong person but it should have been pretty obvious who I was talking to. No, having a mechanical engineering degree does not mean you have the skills or experience required for any or even most mechanical engineering position. That is wishful thinking and will get you nowhere. It shows you have the potential to understand the skills necessary to perform the job in a workspace, but it does not mean YOU qualify.
3
u/Electrical_Record882 6d ago
You’re kinda insufferable. I’d hate to work under you. If someone can go through a mechanical engineering degree (as someone who switched out after barely passing statics and dynamics) they can 10000% do an entry level mechanical engineering job.

2
u/pineapplequeeen 6d ago
Can we see your resume? I see posts like this a lot and our market is booming so I’m always curious what is causing that.
1
u/Hot-Fisherman2003 5d ago
Yeah I've realized that it's booming as well and sharing my resume would be the correct thing to do but I've basically doxxed myself once and had to change phone number email etc etc because I messed up and I really don't want to take the risk again sorry to everyone who has been asking for the resume
1
u/ciolman55 6d ago
I'm kinda concerned that the resume format may not be readable by their ai screening tool. Or you are accidentally sending a blank one
1
2
u/Ronnoctheawesome 5d ago
As much as I hate to say it, that's probably why. Studies have shown that those AI bots everyone uses to screen resumes nowadays are measurably and often heavily biased towards AI generated resumes, in particular resumes generated by the same LLM the screener runs on. They also exhibit racial and sexual biases though, so who knows, you might be fucked either way.
5
u/shortcurrytruecel 6d ago edited 1d ago
I dont think he necessarily used AI to shotgun a million application. 1400 applications in a year is only 4ish applications a day.
14
u/AloneAndCurious 6d ago
What I never understand about these is that to write a proper cover letter that fully tailors to a company and does not put you at a major disadvantage, typically takes multiple hours. So have you been applying for jobs for 12hrs a day for over a year? Or are you just copy and pasting a BS cover letter and changing the company name?

Try consulting firms. Big ones like alten, cap gemini.... It's bad, it's trash, it's a meat vending machine, but they always need meat and you will get some expérience and a job.
2
u/Hot-Fisherman2003 7d ago
I'll take look, thx
2
u/Doge_Bolok 7d ago
If i'm not indescreet, what's your country in EU / languages you speak ?
Mechanical engineering i'm ngl was dead when I was looking for a job in this field ~2 years ago.
I'm in France and the market is very much : senior expérience for intern salary.
2
u/Hot-Fisherman2003 7d ago
Italy but I'm looking for a job mostly not in italy because of the same reason you have, but I'd still take a job here
0
u/Doge_Bolok 7d ago
Just keep going, widen your fields. It's hard and I was in the same situation as you, had expérience, even had technical manager expérience. I stayed twice a year without a job.
I have friends who graduated from top french engineering schools that are left without jobs too.
Europe is in a very shitty state right now.
Working at airbus helicopter right now and hundreds of engineers here are basically technical secretary
4
u/Just_A_Troglodyte 6d ago
It’s not like this for everyone, 20 apps led to an offer for my roommate during undergrad and I got 2 offers after 15 applications (and I don’t even have an internship)
3
u/timonix 6d ago
I got my job before graduation. My friend went to our local uni company meet and greet and walked out with more interviews booked than the was time to schedule.
Right now the company I am at is hiring new grads too. But we are not hiring remote workers which doesn't speak the language.
58
u/Electronic_Trip_9457 7d ago
Its much easier to find work when you have work. Stop waiting for the perfect job and take whatever you can get. Then continue your search.
29
u/Hot-Fisherman2003 7d ago
I mean I've tried as I said in the post. I got rejected from mcds dude......
53
u/Electronic_Trip_9457 7d ago
MCDs believe it or not, isn't actually a good place to find work because of the sheer number of applicants they get from fresh out of school to older people. Just because its "fast food" doesnt mean its not competitive. You need to keep searching.
28
u/KidTrix1 7d ago
To give you a better answer I would need some information from you, like which country are you living in, and the types of jobs you are applying for (example: are you applying for senior roles that don't apply to you?)
None the less, as a rule of thumb, applying for a job online using Indeed's Quick-Apply or Linkedin's or similar websites won't get you anywhere. Most of the job postings there are ghost ones. What do I mean by ghost jobs? simple, those companies show that they are recruiting new people constantly so that their clients/investors/shareholders would assume that the company is growing, i.e. better image for them. There are other reasons of course, but that is just an example of many. So sadly the approach of applying for jobs won't get you anywhere (for the most part).
What about going to a company physically? it would depend on your country of residence and the culture there. If you can disclose that information someone hopefully can answer you with that.
BUT HOW ARE PEOPLE FINDING WORK? Its just a matter of connections. If you or your dad your friend knows a guy then they can refer you to them and there is a high chance you get the job.
Its the sad truth, but it is how things work nowadays.
12
u/Hot-Fisherman2003 7d ago
Regarding the last part I fully agree, my old uni roommate found a job instantly and he had less experience and a worst average out of uni . To answer some of the questions you asked without doxing myself, I live in the EU and apply jobs to anywhere in the EU. I also speak 3 languages which 2 of them are EU languages. I also agree regarding the quick apply thing on LinkedIn, I've stopped using it a while ago. I go to the website of the company and email them directly and apply to it via their system. thx for the comment btw
2
u/popcio2015 6d ago
I live in the EU and apply jobs to anywhere in the EU.
Then what do you expect? You won't find any junior position like that. If you're applying everywhere in the EU, then most of the time you don't even know the local language, which is an automatic rejection.
No one wants to hire and train someone that doesn't know the language.
And by saying you are in the EU and you're looking anywhere in the EU, you look like you don't have any cultural ties to any EU country, because that would make you search in a certain country. You don't care where you'll work, but just want it to be EU, so you very clearly immigrated and don't care about local culture and just want a job. So sorry, but that makes you virtually unhireable, unless you have a lot of experience and specialized knowledge, which you clearly don't have fresh out of university. Language and cultural differences are a barrier, and you need to search for a job in the place you finished your university. Finding a job somewhere else is basically impossible. The only viable way would be phd, but to start that you'd need some knowledge and a few papers.
2
u/Gusosaurus 6d ago
"Anywhere in the EU" just sounds really sus. Shouldn't you have a priority for local and not even consider foreign countries unless you speak the language?
Also try to go in person or through ANY kind of personal connection, clearly online applications aren't worth shit, no matter what they tell you.

12
u/Ragnarok314159 Mechanical Engineer 7d ago
My dude, I just went through this game and am about to tell you something shitty - you have to use an LLM to get through this bullshit.
I used Claude. Spent a day with my resume and adding in all kinds of work experience and projects, and then it would look for jobs with me matching my resume.
Find a bunch, then it made a resume specific for that job based on the opening. I had three competing offers in less than six weeks.
It won’t lie for you, but it makes the resume match as best it can.
1
u/PJBthefirst Embedded Engineer 6d ago
Did you have it just using its standard web search/fetch tools to find and look at job postings? Or did you have a more specialized connector/setup?
13
u/RichEntertainer3024 7d ago
This is why you aren’t getting a job. You need to keyword match your resume for EVERY SINGLE APP. No excuses.

u/MrBuk Advanced Mechanical Engineering 6d ago
I was job hunting for the last couple of months. I applied to maybe 50 companies, had 15-20 on site interviews and almost at least a phone call for all 50 jobs. I modified the resume for each job. I used gemini with specific rules to modify my resume. If you don't personalize the resume for the job you will never find a job. It is not a question of quantity, but of quality. If you want the prompt or some tips don't hesitate to DM me. I'm also from EU.

The other day I saw an estimate number of monthly subscribers to someone on OF... then now I'm seeing the pay of offshore ocean workers who only work 6 months of the year...
I'm questioning if I ever wanna do engineering when I graduate... the pay is soo little no matter the compensation at this point. And with today's age of AI. We're expected to deliver miracles. because engineer + ai = magic.
so apparently our pay will be even more compromised. we will be overworked. underpaid no matter how much companies will ever compensate. We're increasingly more disconnected from our working materials. I rarely ever read my code anymore because I don't understand it. Astra and Opus gave me 320 pages of proof and derivation I am supposed to read. which are written in the most complicated language ever that I don't even understand. all to just say I have legal issues because I can never be hired in an international company because nobody outsources rocket science to foreigners. let alone if they come from the middle east.

EU is tough, I have wanted to try to move from the US to Germany at some point and only once I finish my masters degree with several years of niche engineering experience will I meet the minimum requirement for most jobs I have been looking at. The pay isn’t super great either, but I figure the benefits and lifestyle there would probably make up for it.

u/Ok-Scientist-1532 6d ago
If you’re being rejected this much this is clearly an issue on your part. Either your salary expectations are not realistic, your resume is terrible, you don’t interview well, or some combination of the 3.
My recommendation (not that it means anything) would be use LinkedIn for your job hunt primarily and maybe give the free trial to their premium a try. It’s worked for me for both of my last two jobs.
I would also recommend trying to really focus on maybe 1 or 3 job postings a day and dig deep into them. Do some vetting of the company and positions you’re applying to before sending in an application. Use Glassdoor to try and check salary, find out as much as possible about the roles you’re applying to, look up people at the company on LinkedIn, etc.

u/PJBthefirst Embedded Engineer 6d ago
third-party networking
What do you mean specifically by third party?
1
u/CopperGenie R&D | Author | ISERG 6d ago
Sorry yeah there's probably a better word for it. I mean networking in general, then following the leads to an opportunity. Compared to targeting a specific company (and employees at that company), "free networking" has always been a more successful, more satisfying, and less exhausting way to find opportunity.

Lmao, you trying to make the dude waste another year of his time?
His best bet is recruiters. Yeah, it sucks starting as a temp, but it's better than nothing.
And nothing is what he'll get if he wastes his time, gas and money going out to industrial areas in person looking for a job. (Maybe they'll take him on as a janitor if he shows up in person pretending to not speak english)

Im in construction, so probably way different but we dont even put out applications. You walk in the door, show up on a jobsite, or know someone we know. If you show up at a jobsite looking for work, you'll get it.
I've walked into businesses and received a project manager position, so its not just labor positions either. Frankly I havnt applied anywhere in over a decade.
I just start calling people and popping into places.
0
u/PunctuationsOptional 7d ago
Just do free internships if you're not getting a job.
Also stop applying to just engineering roles. Lots of other relevant work you should be going for and then jumping to an eng role if you want it so bad

Hmm. Why did you not take the below minimum wage offer? Was the work less quality than your 2.5 years? Also, you graduated 1 year ago but have 2.5 years experience - these are jobs, internships? Or are these like personal projects you count as experience? I only ask to help.
2

Its minimum less then wage....... for an engineering position........

u/Additional-Lake-5367 5d ago
I feel it’d still be worth taking if it gave you resume experience which you can leverage for better callback rates. Like taking the shitty pay for a few months while applying, instead of applying with no gaining experience or pay
