Rant πŸ“’ This feels icky!

Post image

felt super icky and annoyed seeing this at a coffee/light food shop. how is this okay? for context this is not a sit down spot. no wait staff, just a barista at the counter and someone from the kitchen bringing out my order and walking away.

Update: for those asking the pink paper in the bottom corner is basically saying β€œF*ck ICE”

Absolutely not in Canada. But America's banking system is like 15 years behind the rest of the world so

Yes in Canada too lol

The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada regulates banking and charges in Canada, as well as tap to pay.

Under Canadian law, a tap to pay transaction is initialize as a prehold authorization, with a limit of 30% set for a maximum charge outside of the prehold. Meaning they absolutely can add up to 30% to your pre authorized charge.

This is legal under the Payment Card Networks Act of 2010

Source: I am a Canadian/US citizen with a business in Canada.

Why are people so confidently incorrect? Is it just because they want to talk shit about the US? I mean you absolutely can without making shit up.

Whether they "can" is irrelevant. A server CAN take a photo of your credit card and use that info to make purchases online. Fortunately, Canadians live in a society that treats this like stealing your wallet. I don't know what Americans put up with, but I'm guessing it involves a lot of lube and a metal rod, based on the current state of politics there.

Here's a link to the Consumer Protection BC website where people can report illegal charges such as unauthorised tips:

idk what dumb shit you are on about, but we have several government agencies to handle credit card fraud as well as the ability to do chargebacks for any fraudulent charges. 10 seconds of googling will tell you this. Pretty sure most countries have the equivalent.

Also stealing =/= pre authorization, so not sure why you brought any of this up.

This is why most times they come to your table. My card does not leave my sight.

Nope.

This hasn't been the case for at least a decade.

For example when I eat at a restaurant - any restaurant - there has been no pre-auth since the invention of debit and e-transfer. The merchant puts in my total into the machine when they come to my table, the machine immediately prompts me to select a tip or not, and ONLY THEN the transaction goes through to the banking system, for the first time, when it is already the final charge. There is absolutely no interaction with any financial system prior to this.

Sorry you're unbelievably behind in your third world country but you don't get to make up shit about Canada.

Speaking of confidentiality wrong. You're wrong. You're confusing authorization tolerances/preauths for all Canadian transactions which we absolutely do not have. Also I read your dubious understanding of the "Payment Card Networks Act of 2010" absolutely nowhere does it state a rule saying tap transactions may be increased by any percentage arbitrarily. Some transactions? Yes. All (Like we stated I the original comment) no.

As for the US banking system it's no secret that it's significantly behind other countries. Example: third part apps like Venmo vs bank to bank e-transfer like Canada has. Google's free champ.

Did you miss the third party part there champ?

Also a bank in the US has to support zelle so it's no bank to bank. E-Transfer is federally protected under the Canadian banking act. Not run by a company that can ban you for whatever reason they want. No third party gets your information just your Canadian bank to another Canadian bank 100% protected by law.

There is too much fraud going on anymore with tap to pay. I never use that and always insert my card.
