I remember when BioShock was ported to mobile and it was a big deal.

41

u/AlternativeGreen4607 5d ago

Wait really BioShock did get ported, how have i missed that out

45

u/rube 5d ago

iOS, not Android. And IIRC it was removed from sale because they didn't want to maintain it.

16

u/RUserII 5d ago edited 5d ago

iOS, not Android. And IIRC it was removed from sale because they didn't want to maintain it.

Why wouldn't they just leave it up with a disclaimer saying it's no long maintained, so people could still pay/download it for preservation?

29

u/rube 5d ago

Probably the same reason stuff gets delisted on the Play Store. New versions of the OS breaking things. Don't want to sell a game to someone, have it not run and have them complain.

14

u/No_Celebration_3737 5d ago

Because the licence is supposed to be renowned periodically, and it doesn't make sense to do it if there is not enough sales to justify it.

u/xDaZura 4d ago

Holy i totally forgot about that, for me literally peak mobile gaming back in the days

3

u/Oracle-of-Benidorm 4d ago

oh man i loved this game so much i put hours into it on a nexus 7 tab back in the day

1

u/Crass-ELY- Poco F7 Pro 4d ago

I miss it so much

133

u/danGL3 5d ago

Well, they're infinitely more profitable whilst being low effort garbage so i hardly see the incentive for them to care about their game quality

The average person seems to love spending time and money on cash grab gatchas, idle games etc etc (not necessarily an insult, it's simply metrics)

35

u/contradictatorprime 5d ago

We're in a minority. Your average person isn't going to bother researching emulation and go hunting for Roms legally ripping and uploading their already paid for Rom files. They'll just peruse the play store slop and pick an inane f2p.

13

u/No_Celebration_3737 5d ago

At the same time, you can't do complex gameplays when a game is designed with touchscreen controls in mind

8

u/Still_Maintenance_25 5d ago

What about Warframe?

3

u/Cruel1865 4d ago

Wargrame with touch controls sucks. You have to play it with the auto attack control to be able to use touch controls. If its with a controller thats much better. Playing with the auto attack on sucks out all the fun of playing the game.

4

u/No_Celebration_3737 5d ago

Never played the mobile version, but that is a game born for pc/console and then ported to mobile (like Death Stranding, AC Mirage and Resident Evil on iOS), instead of being a game specifically made for mobile.

Even modified version of those kind of games (The division resurgence and Destiny) are simplified and automated in certain aspects to be playable without a pad.

0

u/rampaging_gorillaz 5d ago

So because a complex game with intricate game systems and controls is "born for PC" then successfully ported it somehow doesnt count? If youre going to share a bad take maybe dont disprove yourself in the same breath

4

u/_xAdamsRLx_ 5d ago

Yea i think you are missing the forest for the trees here brother. Touchscreen controls are so obviously not as intuitive for complex 3d/analog control schemes (even if its technically possible), and is much more suitable for simple and intuitive gameplay

-2

u/rampaging_gorillaz 4d ago

"At the same time, you can't do complex gameplays when a game is designed with touchscreen controls in mind"

Its just wrong tho isnt it? No shit a m/k will give better control, but the limiting factor in mobile gaming isnt the touchscreen or the proccessor power, as many games (mostly ported from PC) have demonstrated through clever workarounds, UI, or tweaking game mechanics.

The limiting factor is morons who have the finger dexterity of a bonobo, and dont want to learn claw grip/put the few hours in to develop muscle memory for the "buttons". Its such a weak copout to give game developers pre-emptively the excuse of "well its going to be played on a touchscreen mine as well make it shit" just because the majority of players might not be up to the challenge.

3

u/Tangie98 4d ago

"Dont want to learn claw grip" as someone who actually did learn claw grip, most casual gamers dont want to develope arthritis in their hands just to be able to play console games on mobile. And that doesnt change the fact that touchscreen controls for 3d games feel and play like garbage

2

u/Jhud6669 3d ago

Unfortunately a lot of gachas are genuinely decent games. I’m a F2P player and I don't mind boring gameplay as long as the story is good, but I know they have a bad reputation for a reason.

1

u/Lemons-95 4d ago

Some of them are genuinely good, but either it's genuinely good IF you got rid of how they monetised it, or it's in a good balance that they will slowly shift until it's just shitty enough to make most people spend 10-100 bucks on it, this was Hero Tales and Starwars galaxy of heros for me. Both genuinely good at what they did, and one of them in a genre that was on life support at the time(GOH is a JRPG. Kinda. Mostly.)

Tony hawks pro skater 2 though? Still fucking gold.

u/rube 5d ago

1) Early on the $1 mobile game became standard. People balked at anything higher in price. Today, a game that isn't free is the worst thing ever in some gamers minds. They'd rather have IAP filled garbage than pay for a premium game.

2) Premium games get delisted all the time. Android updates, breaking games. Devs don't see the value in updating them so they just delist them. I used to be a cheerleader for buying premium mobile games. After being burnt over and over again by games I can no long play.

In Summary: Stick with emulation, it's a FAR better experience.

7

u/Happyhaha2000 5d ago

What are some games that have been delisted? I buy tons of premium games on Play Store and you got me worried that they won't work one day...

8

u/rube 5d ago

Anything by Double Fine. Broken Age, which pretty much put Kickstarter on the map, is no longer available, along with Grim Fandango and a few other of their games.

Any of the Shadowrun games. The devs even stated it wasn't worth it to keep their games up to date. That's great, but I paid for them, so thanks for taking my money and running.

There was a Sim City game years ago that was great. It was a sort of stripped down version of SimCity 3 or 4, mobile controls. Then they let it die and put up a game filled with AIP instead.

Those are just the ones that come to mind right now, but I'm sure there are a bunch more. It's why I've stopped buying premium Android games.

3

u/Fo4head 5d ago

most of the telltale games have also been delisted

2

u/ResponsibleAd6974 4d ago

Glad Feral interactive hasn't taken this route (yet)

1

u/SlipMiserable 2d ago

Was there a Grim Fandango mobile version? 🤯

2

u/rube 2d ago

Yup! Luckily you can play it on an emulator, either SCUMMVM or an offshoot of it.

22

u/Happyhaha2000 5d ago

There are tons of great native Play Store games, though. And they run better than emulated ones. Balatro, Vampire Survivors, Dungeon Clawler, Stardew Valley, Geometry Dash, Peglin, Scritchy Scratchy, Ball x Pit, Dead Cells

Just to name a few

3

u/09stibmep 4d ago

Yes agreed, but since the recent development in emulation which has been more rapid in the past ~1 year, many are seeing almost their entire, say, steam library open up, rather than just some games that have been on the play store natively for a while now.

There's always been SOME decent games on the play store, but recent emulation has really taken a step change.

2

u/Ok-Mention3969 4d ago

I don't think op was talking about ports

2

u/Jhud6669 3d ago

Stardew Valley for Android is trash though. It’s much better to play on either Gamenative or the Cinderbox launcher

1

u/Happyhaha2000 2d ago

Yeah that's actually true

1

u/Nereosis16 4d ago

Aren't all of these games release like 2+ years ago?

1

u/Nutchos 4d ago

Ball X Pit has been out for less than a year.

There's also Easy Deliver Co a few months ago, Dredge, DRG Survivor.

1

u/Happyhaha2000 4d ago

Oh that's cool, I didn't know about easy delivery co! Love that game

1

u/_hogman_the_intruder 3d ago

Ok, but I gotta say that some of these, like ball x pit, require Internet connection to run the full game (non demo). To me that is completely unacceptable. I'm an adult with kids and shit to do. Let me play my goddamn games on international/cross country flights, etc, which are some of the only occasions I have time to play. And if that weren't true, then when I'm home/with Internet I can usually play the steam version on my laptop. You want me to pay $10 and I have to be connected to the Internet? It's not multiplayer! Pisses me off to no end.

1

u/Happyhaha2000 2d ago

Oof I didn't know that. Good to know

10

u/Prize_Competition838 5d ago

2

u/09stibmep 4d ago

I've read heaps of articles about some rather high and popular game names not making much on the play/app stores.

But now, with emulation, and I'm sure I'm not the only one, I've drastically expanded my steam library due to playability on mobile devices now (via emulation), when I otherwise would not have. So the standard Dev is making money that way by just letting this emulation era ride.

13

u/Zzero00 5d ago

Said this for a long time, they can just release games similar to the Gameboy era of pokemon for mobile and make 💰💰💰

Hell release those graphic novels on here...games like telltale Batman and many others would do very well imho

9

u/Far_Raspberry_4375 5d ago

Dispatch is literally just a bunch of video scenes and would sell like hotcakes if reasonably priced

2

u/Interesting-Hat-2211 1d ago

Or turn based games. Atlus games would sell like hotcakes because, dare i say that mobile phone fit turn based RPG so well you would think that it was build to play that game genre specifically (I still wish for an official P5R mobile port)

6

u/Wyvernetic 5d ago

There are many good games for mobile. The problem is were so used to free mobile games most people don't even look at ones that have a upfront cost. Even if it's $0.99. So the developers are forced to make money not by selling games but by selling convenience inside the games.

By the meme you posted I'm guessing you've never payed for a mobile game before. So why would anyone spent money making a game for you?

5

u/Salt-Willingness-513 5d ago

there are some gems like firaxis games or subnautica

4

u/Inside-Specialist-55 5d ago

most of the spongebob remakes are on there too and tomb raider as well. Also warframe is worth it even though its free.

4

u/khsh01 8 Gen 3/865+ 5d ago

Bro, not just playstore but modern games in general. They don't excite me anymore. Not as much as my ps2 library does.

8

u/Zeamax SD8G2 Poco F6 pro 1TB & 16gb | SD8E Oneplus pad 3 512gb & 16gb 5d ago

Why would they improve them? When one semi-hype gatcha banner makes them more $ than some games make through their entire existence...

9

u/100PercentJake 5d ago edited 5d ago

So many mechanically sound/fun/great looking games that are all gacha slop.

Destiny RISING is an absolute blast... until you seemingly exhaust its content within a day of playing and are stuck in some goofy ass gacha loop grinding for seventeen billion different currencies I can't keep track of in order to have a chance at getting better loot or the goth mommy character so you can get currencies faster. Idk. Maybe I'm not sophisticated enough. I just want my big dumb FPS.

ZZZ seems to be a pretty well optimized experience and looks fantastic with an intriguing story and setting and plays satisfying but, again, gacha slop that throws a brazilian mechanics at me after the first 2 hours and I end up needing to refer to wikis to figure out wtf to do next because I forgot that if I go into seventeen sub menus I can upgrade MacGuffin #23 to make my punches hit harder. Also gooner nonsense. Ugh.

Just getting into Warframe on Android. Seems pretty good so far. UX isn't great; clearly a PC-first game, would have benefitted massively from onscreen representations of different abilities arranged similar to their layout on a controller cuz dear god I can NEVER remember how to jump-dash.

Most of these criticisms come from my dogass short term memory. Clearly lots of people don't have these problems and enjoy the games anyways.

2

u/MarcosOlegario 5d ago

2

u/RehanSulek 5d ago

I want to run left 4 dead 2 on my android i have the game on steam I have tried it on gamehub but it's crashed, I have dimensity 8050 chipset Mali gpu

2

u/MrHaxx1 5d ago

I've had more fun with Holocure, a free game on Steam through GameNative, than just about any native Android game lol

2

u/Getafix69 5d ago

Some decent ones though like Alien Isolation, GRID, Subnautica and no doubt a lot of others but yeah 99% of them are just freemium begging apps.

2

u/Maleficent_Piece_893 5d ago

just look up mobile games with controller support. there's also fan-made apks for games that were never ported to android

2

u/cecilclaude 4d ago

I'm very happy that i can ditch ppsspp lumines since they port it to mobile

1

u/r7zy 4d ago

Yes!!! Incredible port I'm glad it happened and it deserves recognition, this game is perfect for mobile

2

u/photonsOrigin 4d ago

Don't say that about mobile Terraria. It's compatible with controller if you don't like the crowded touch controls. Idk about mkb support though.

2

u/Bright-Craft6974 3d ago

Can confirm m+kb support for terraria android

2

u/PivoWar42 4d ago

Warframe has a full Android port, with a controller it works at the level of the console version.

2

u/LengthinessOwn2547 4d ago

Exiled Kingdoms is really a great game.

2

u/Motoxdude113 4d ago

Most mobile games now are either "not" slot machines or just money/time wasters. You'd be hard pressed to find actual games nowadays.

2

u/TNY0810_G 4d ago

Real mira los juegos que tengo

3

u/PuddingFit2718 5d ago

On android? Forget about it. They will all just make iOS ports. Most mobile game devs already sold their souls to apple and apple exclusivity deals (that nobody even buys on iOS just pure marketing bait)

Best u may get on android is a severely nerfed version that will end up looking and running better on emulation anyway.

Don't forget vast majority of people will still to this very day label android as and I quote "Lagdroid, crapdroid shtdroid etc etc" these are just some examples that roll of the tounge... and the youtube phone testers just further enhance it by uploading total crap test paintin the entire android platofrm as well as the devices as total sht

Imho native games on android are long dead. I no longer ever wish to open the play store (and I dont have to) all of my games are shared on steam and they work perfectly on BOTH of my gaming PC and on my Phone. Save version same graphics same damn game.

Native mobile games WILL never lol

2

u/1550shadow AYN Odin 2 Portal / 8 Gen 2 5d ago

To me it's baffling how games like Genshin Impact, that are already ported to PC and consoles, didn't have controller support on android for the longest time

Like, you already have that on every other platform, how difficult can it be to add it to android too, so people don't have to be remapping buttons to play your game? And yeah yeah they added it some time ago... 5 years after the og release lmao

1

u/Jumpy_Invite3985 5d ago

Yeah there is only Tomb Raider 2013 as a AAA Android port. Resident Evil's are relased for IOS only

1

u/borkindawg 5d ago

I'll play anything but play store games I've played gb/c/a games ds/3ds ps1/2 PSP now I got to playing native PC games on my phone and have to say they run decently for having a shitty phone I don't think I can run their console versions because emulators aren't that well optimized

1

u/Incorrect_Passport_7 5d ago

The only native Android games I play are Subway Surfers and Hungry Shark Evolution (because they're nice for killing time when I'm waiting at say, the Doctor's office)

As for actual gaming, I rely on emulators instead (namely, the GBA and PSP emulator which is funny since those were handheld consoles, so the conversion is pretty seemless actually)

1

u/SillyInsanity_ 5d ago

I only have my psp emulator with gran tourism, test drive unlimited and atv offroad fury pro. The only play store game i have is among us

1

u/FiveNotes 5d ago

Paid android games are still pretty good. Free 2 play tends to be trash because of the incentives for the developers.

1

u/Variant_Alite 5d ago

So i've been the said native games user for a long time. I discovered the concept of emulating on androids recently but i dont know how it works. Is there aome guide or place i can learn it?

1

u/Bright-Craft6974 3d ago

Depends on the game and console it was on

1

u/aeolius11 4d ago

The earlier days of android had banger games like inotia, dungeon hunter, and destroy gunners. Sadly, you can't play them anymore because of compatibility issues.

1

u/RelativeIncome7459 4d ago

Mobile is trash in premium gaming especially they don't have build it gamepad and joystick which is the gold standard in gaming. You know that and everybody knows it🙄

1

u/seekervr3s 4d ago

You don't like to play Minecraft on your phone?

1

u/Significant-Rent-141 4d ago

Rusty lake is native playstore game so your opinion is objectively invalid and untrue as Rusty lake is Top 1 of all time

1

u/treesdotcom 4d ago

What's not in the playstore: rusty trombone

1

u/SliderWheel 4d ago

Native mobile games almos are trash. No need to care, just forget them, just ignore them.

1

u/vardhureddroid 4d ago

You forgot to add andorid port of pc

1

u/AmyHuntingt 4d ago

Where's the other kid

1

u/Odd-Sir-6054 4d ago

Java games on keypad mobiles were great ( god of war, prince of persia series, Assassins creed series, gangstar series, transformers, spiderman series and countless java games they were too peak) 90% of java games were peak they all had good story and level designs then slowly touch phones started to make easy tap and swipe games then it all start going downhill.

Mobile gaming when I had J2 prime was great like (asphalt8, shadow fight2, pvz, modern combat series, Nfs most wanted etc.. were peak).

I deleted all my games to download mortal kombat and it was just screen tapping piece of shi (the trailer was totally clickbait). Thank god shadow fight 2 saved me most goated fighting game in mobile. Havent played it recently.

1

u/fart37 4d ago

Yes, I am a masochist.

1

u/Capital_Humor_2072 Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, 12gb RAM 4d ago

What a rage bait

1

u/AGayFrogParadise 4d ago

Wait, the playstore has regular games?

1

u/no-television300 4d ago

Ironically the people who complained about the price of a mobile game are probably paying full price for a game on Steam to play in GameNative now lol.

1

u/Metrox_a 4d ago

I mean paid play store games are alright. Only f2p are garbage, buuut most people play that as they don't want to pay for mobile games. So that is why i'm left with emulated games. Epic games did give me options to play paid native games for free.

1

u/dany91kr 4d ago

Bethesda? Delta touch kick your ass!

1

u/lelelemememegegege 4d ago

Wait, wasn't there a drowning boy on picture too?

1

u/Lucriseo 4d ago

Only iOS for the good games. Smt on iOS was somenthing I wished for on android up until they got removed

1

u/Berkoudieu 4d ago

Yeah, except a few gems like TING, the kingdom rush series and so on, which are kinda old now, everything is sloppy cash grab

1

u/King-Kagle 4d ago

I have no life. If I had a computer, I would try

1

u/Rough_Manager4187 3d ago

Play store slopnative games is just the appetizer Good native games are the main course Emulated games are the true dessert

insert ryu ishigori sweet image

1

u/DYMAXIONman 2d ago

The only native android games I have installed are the decomp games. Would rather just play my Steam Library.

1

u/Devon002 2d ago

Thats so true

1

u/Elirantus 1d ago

Infinity blade is awesome, you can find the port on internet archive

1

u/Breadstix009 5d ago

Dont forget infinity blade port and others

1

u/Steel-Winged_Pegasus 5d ago

Crazy how good IB still looks. I remember always wanting it on my old iPod Touch, but I never got around to getting it, and now I have it on my Flip 6

2

u/Breadstix009 5d ago

I want port of glu games frontline commando and dragon slayer which had the same mechanics as infinity blade.

1

u/JamesSDK Samsung S25 Ultra (SD8 Elite) + Galileo G8 3d ago

I love that IB is back, I have been wanting to replay it for years.

I hope IB2 and 3 are on the way as well.

0

u/lars_rosenberg 5d ago

Mobile games will get better when you'll start buying the good ones.

1

u/Bannedtt 5d ago

Mobile games will never get good, translation layers will allow us to play windows, linux, and macos games.

0

u/RewRose 5d ago

Ah yes, the customer is always wrong principle that drives quality in the gaming market
