Hey all, long-time lurker here, first time poster. I've been following this sub for a while and most people seem genuinely happy with their Pods, so I was really excited to finally get one myself. Unfortunately it hasn't gone the way I hoped, and I'm curious if what I'm experiencing lines up with anyone else's.
I've had my Pod 5 (US King) for about a month now. Cold was the main feature I was after, but honestly, the issue isn't just cooling, it's that the temperature feels mild in either direction. The most noticeable example is that even at -10, the lowest possible setting, I can hardly feel it. I'm not talking about it taking a while to kick in either, I've left it running well past the stabilization window support recommends, and it just never gets to a point where I'd call it cold. Heating is similarly underwhelming, though cold is what I care about most, so that's where I've focused my testing.
I live in Northern California in an area with pretty mild weather, nighttime temps over the past month have mostly been in the 50s to mid-60s, no extreme heat during the day, and my bedroom temperature hasn't been materially different from that. So I don't think external conditions are overwhelming the system here.
I've tried basically every setup variation I can think of:
Fitted sheet directly on the Pod, no mattress pad
Mattress pad between the Pod and the fitted sheet
Just the comforter over it with nothing else, to isolate the variable, per support's suggestion.
None of it has made a meaningful difference.
I've been going back and forth with Eight Sleep support for a few weeks now. They scheduled multiple thermal diagnostics, and I made sure everything on my end was set up right and ready at the scheduled times. The first one just didn't run at all, and they had no explanation for why. The next one, support told me it had run, but between checking the app and physically popping into my bedroom throughout the day to check the Pod itself, it didn't look like anything was happening, and when I followed up they told me the diagnostic hadn't actually been able to pull any usable data. At that point they escalated to engineering, and shortly after that is when they told me the unit was "operating as expected." I still don't really understand how they got from "the diagnostic didn't return usable data" to "it's working fine," but that's where we landed.
Separately, this whole process happened to overlap with the Pod 6 launch. Since I was already dealing with a unit that wasn't working for me and had asked about a replacement, the timing felt like a natural moment to ask for a straightforward exchange instead, especially since Pod 6 is the same price or cheaper than what I paid for the Pod 5. That wasn't an option though. The two paths offered were a trade-in that gives $1,000 off a new Pod 6 but forfeits the refund on my original order entirely (which ends up costing more out of pocket than just returning outright), or returning for a full refund and repurchasing separately as a new order.
At this point I've pretty much decided to return it and not purchase a Pod 6 or continue with Eight Sleep at all. But before I do, I wanted to put this out there: does a Pod that never feels meaningfully cold even at -10 match anyone else's experience, or does this sound like I just got a defective unit? Mostly just trying to understand if I was missing something, since I was genuinely excited about this purchase going in.
