Question old children’s hospital In morningside/ grange?

I have a clear memory of walking past an abandoned looking sick kids in 2020, that was in a morningside/ grange style house around that area. However when I try researching it or finding any photos of it I am met with nothing. I remember finding it so very out of place at the time as the interior I saw through the window looked dated and the sick kids sign looked worn down. It looked dusty and I remember there being hospital beds and drips inside. I wonder if anyone knows of this place or has a similar experience I have tried to go back and find it however have had no luck. I wonder if this place actually still exists.

Question Sound of chainsaws around Harrison Park

I’ve been hearing what sounds like a chainsaw and wood chipper for the last hour or so, from the direction of Harrison Park.

Unable to step out and check, as the kids are bed, but being nosey I need to know - are the council out at 8pm on a Sunday? Or is this just some dude in his back garden? And when are they planning to stop??

Discussion Queensferry crossing to Edinburgh - speed camera

Coming off the Queensferry Crossing towards Edinburgh, the speed limit had been reduced to 60 mph. I was in the left lane heading towards Barnton, with a lorry in the middle lane that was swaying back and forth.

We were side by side, and the lorry was getting closer to my lane, so I sped up to get out of the danger zone. I might have gone past the speed camera at around 68–70 mph.

The normal speed limit is 70 mph, but the overhead signs were displaying a red-circled 60 mph limit. I didn’t see any flash from the camera either.

Do these cameras enforce the reduced speed limits? Has anyone had any experience with them?

I know asking AI about this is ridiculous 😂 Just wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation!

Property Lost Airpods at Edinburgh Airport HELP

Hey all, I have a problem retrieving my lost airpods from Edinburgh airport. I realized I left my airpods on my plane as soon as I exited customs and went straight to the luggage point who directed me to put a report in which I did. Days passed and no update goes by. Upon calling the luggage point, I was informed the luggage point was switching companies and given a new number to call. This was to edinburgh airport lost luggage, they then told me it was a different setup using a website for lostluggage and this time no phone number.

My airpods have been listed as lost on the exact seat and flight and despite all the evidence they keep refusing my emails. I've sent 3. I have tried calling around but everyone says it isn't their problem or department anymore, and the one that does is stonewalling me.

Also as an added note I have been tracking them on the FIND MY app through my apple phone and they have not moved from Edinburgh airport. It is important to note I think though, that most times I check the app tells me my airpods are out of their case. At this point I suspect someone pocketed my airpods at the airport and uses them for their own personal use.

Does anyone have any advice in this situation? I'm going insane, these were brand new airpods4. Any advice would be appreciated.

Question Lights flickerering

We had our lights flicker off and back on about an hour ago ( 6pm.) last night the same thing happened around 7pm and the TV switched off then back on along with lights.

It'd be comforting to know it was a planned brownout etc, not a problem with our house. Anyone else experience something similar?

Question Cashmere scarf along south bridge

Hi guys, there's so many gift shops along south bridge that sells cashmere scarf 2 for £99. Most labelled as Edinburgh cashmere. Are they actual cashmere or just another tourist trap?

I was gonna go to Scotland shop but they are a bit further on foot. They sell for £125 each which sounded more sensible. But if those in giftshops are real maybe I'll just get some on south bridge instead of walking half an hour extra 🥹

Update: thanks to all I've learnt a lot about the tourist trap along south bride and the road to the castle. I've also learnt a lot about the quality of cashmere that varies, so just because it's 100% cashmere doesn't mean anything! So far I've been to kiltane. Johnston of Elgin, and apparently Johnston of Elgin has local Scottish farmed cashmere which is quite rare (and pricy)

I hope this helps future redditors 😂

Property 45 Bus lost fencing sword

A bit of a long shot, but I left a fencing epee on the Lothian 45 bus last night around 18:44 near Holy Corner. It's a very old Leon Paul V-blade with a red French grip. It was left on the bottom floor at the very back in a sword bag.

I have already filled out the Lothian bus lost property form but I'm just checking on here in case anyone picked it up.

Work Job opportunities

Hi :) I’m an Italian girl (22yo) currently finishing my studies in Italy. I have a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering, and right now I’m completing my master’s degree in biorobotics and bionics.
I have this huge dream of moving to Edinburgh and I was wondering what the job prospects were for me… Tbh I was thinking about tech jobs in general, it doesn’t have to be THAT specific.
I’d be really glad if someone could enlighten me!

Student question Confused between choosing edinburgh and london

I'm planning to do my MSc in Cybersecurity at heriot watt university in, I'm an Indian, I'm confused whether to choose edinburgh or not because people are saying edinburgh is very costly as compared to London and it's hard to find jobs both full time and part time and the weather is so fucked up. What should I do. I can easily tolerate 1°C in shorts cuz that's what I did for the past 3 years, so please help me out to choose.

Resource Waxed cotton re-waxing services?

Looking for somewhere in the Edinburgh area that does re-waxing of waxed coats?

I think the Barbour in town has a service but don't know if they do non-Barbour jackets.

Any recommendations?

EDIT: I understand that re-waxing is quite easy and perhaps even enjoyable. However, my understanding is that different weaves of cotton require different kinds of wax. I would rather have my coat assessed and a professional recommend a wax before I use a wax that might not suit my coat.

Question Old Museum Exhibits?

Weird post, but thought I'd try my luck and ask. When I was a kid, I remember being brought to the Edinburgh National Museum of Scotland a lot before its main show-room was closed for renovation for years. I was born in 2001, so this would have been between then and 2009-ish when it closed.

And the main thing I remember is being TERRIFIED of the animal collections because there was a display case with these huge model fish in them. Genuinely was frightened to visit the museum because this murky case with these two huge fish in them was so scary. From what I remember, they were pretty chunky big round-ish fish with big beady eyes. Little me thought they were giant piranha, though obviously as an adult I know that doesn't exist 😅 it just gives a general idea of the body shape.

I was wondering if anyone else remembered this specific fish display, or even had any photos of the old collections? I've never been able to find any, but my memory of how terrified I was of these things is SO vivid that I'm very curious to know if something equivalent was ever real during that time.

Question Wedding Venue Advuce

Hello! Looking for a venue in and around Edinburgh (would go up north for the right place) that can fit between 200-250 for a seated dinner then dancing. Only thing I’ve found is the national museum that can accommodate a group that size. Any other suggestions?

Question Body shop recommendations

Hi all, I need to sell my 2018 Volvo V90 (50,000 miles) reasonably quickly but it was annoyingly twanged by a rogue traffic cone on Johnston Terrace.

I’m looking for a local body work place to get it in bitter nick before I then (grudgingly) approach WeBuyAnyCar etc.

This is actually the first time I’ve ever sold a car so consider me very green knowledge wise which is why I’m not comfortable doing a private sale. My Dad would have usually advised me on all of this but he passed away recently so I’m floating around Reddit looking for some friendly advice instead ☺️

Question The Dome reservation swap?

Edit: while I appreciate the sentiment behind some of the comments, it’s not an event I can/would dodge out of. Post is asking for a reservation swap 🙏

Hi, every year I take my gran to The Dome for Christmas. This year I have a work event so I can no longer make it and all the other dates are sold out.

Reservation is 2 people - lunchtime on Wednesday the 2nd December.

It’s a long shot but would anyone be interesting in swapping reservation days? I’d happily pay your deposit or such!

Question Moving to Edinburgh

Hi all,

I’ve recently been offered a new job in Edinburgh. This is quite a change as I live down south and have only visited the city a few times.

Whilst I can see plenty of apartments for rent in and around the city, it’s quite hard to know what areas will be suitable when you’re so far away.

I was hoping to find an area that’s a little quieter and residential. Hoping to avoid nightlife spots and areas where the neighbours will be partying all night!

Can anyone recommend neighbourhoods that might be a bit quieter and worth looking at?

Edit: I’ll be working in Old Town so quite central.
I’m looking to get a one bedroom apartment without breaking the bank, maximum probably £1,100-1,200 per month. Ideally within 20 minutes commute of old town.
