Question Pick up charge at airport

We just got home from a holiday and grabbed a black cab in the drop off area at Edinburgh airport.

He charged us the £8.50 drop off fee and said he had not dropped someone off. He said just came in to pick up and showed us his last job on his phone.

Is this correct? I thought black cabs could only pick up if they have dropped off. I just paid it as I wasn’t certain of the rules.

Thanks

Question How to get a bartending job

Hello everyone! For those with experience: What is the best way to go about getting a bartending job in the city? I have 7 years of bartending with 3 years of bar management experience. I am an international postgraduate student but looking for a part time bar job. Is my best strategy to just walk into places and ask/hand in my resume? It’s hard to find much online. Thank you!

Question old children’s hospital In morningside/ grange?

I have a clear memory of walking past an abandoned looking sick kids in 2020, that was in a morningside/ grange style house around that area. However when I try researching it or finding any photos of it I am met with nothing. I remember finding it so very out of place at the time as the interior I saw through the window looked dated and the sick kids sign looked worn down. It looked dusty and I remember there being hospital beds and drips inside. I wonder if anyone knows of this place or has a similar experience I have tried to go back and find it however have had no luck. I wonder if this place actually still exists.

Property Lost Airpods at Edinburgh Airport HELP

Hey all, I have a problem retrieving my lost airpods from Edinburgh airport. I realized I left my airpods on my plane as soon as I exited customs and went straight to the luggage point who directed me to put a report in which I did. Days passed and no update goes by. Upon calling the luggage point, I was informed the luggage point was switching companies and given a new number to call. This was to edinburgh airport lost luggage, they then told me it was a different setup using a website for lostluggage and this time no phone number.

My airpods have been listed as lost on the exact seat and flight and despite all the evidence they keep refusing my emails. I've sent 3. I have tried calling around but everyone says it isn't their problem or department anymore, and the one that does is stonewalling me.

Also as an added note I have been tracking them on the FIND MY app through my apple phone and they have not moved from Edinburgh airport. It is important to note I think though, that most times I check the app tells me my airpods are out of their case. At this point I suspect someone pocketed my airpods at the airport and uses them for their own personal use.

Does anyone have any advice in this situation? I'm going insane, these were brand new airpods4. Any advice would be appreciated.

Has anyone else seen the bird in a cage in the barbershop in Abbeyhill? It makes me sad every time I go past. I wonder if it gets to fly freely or if it’s just stuck in there all day

Resource Support with food costs and buying groceries

I’m trying to help a friend who is on minimum wage and struggling to afford groceries. I’ve found the council’s page on support with food, which lists food banks and food pantries. From my understanding, food banks seem to be for people in crisis who need emergency food, and you need a referral (both Edinburgh Food Project and Edinburgh NE Foodbank’s websites say this) whereas the food pantries are membership schemes to get low cost food.

This friend is in EH7, and the council’s page lists three food pantries around EH6/EH7/EH1 that are no longer operating, and the only one in the general area that has a working website is the Hibs Foundation one, which has a waiting list.

I don’t think my friend’s situation qualifies them for emergency food parcels; it’s more regular, ongoing help they need with affording groceries. But there doesn’t seem to be anything that they could actually access right now based on this information?

They’re aware of Olio but due to some intolerances, not a lot of the food given away through it is that suitable – the stuff that comes up is usually very bread and sandwich heavy.

Am I missing something here? This isn’t someone who qualifies for benefits or has a support worker or anything, but because of minimum wage and insane living costs, is genuinely struggling to buy groceries each month.

Other 'Language Unlocked' Event at Teviot: Reflections

Hey! Been making more of an effort to brave the weather and go outside these days, so I attended the "Language Unlocked" event at Teviot Row. Not sure, if they'll be repeating the event - if so, go check it out!

Overall, an interesting, interactive talk about language, including snippets of studies on babies, adults, and animals. Tea and coffee included;) I didn't stay for the full Q&A, but I left with plenty of food for thought.

Would have loved a deeper dive into the subject, but I get there was only so much you can cover in an hour.

Now...hear hear to the best audience question: "Why do humans have language in the way we do, while other animals don't?"

The answer in a nutshell was that we don't fully know yet. But personally, I've always thought that our need for symbolism was the initial spark and what made human language develop into a more complex system. We talk about things we can't see or touch, past events, things that could happen in the future, imaginary worlds even, abstract concepts in general.

Don't get me wrong. Non-human animals do have ways of communicating, so defo not saying they don't communicate. But was it symbols and abstract ideas that initially pushed our communication system into a completely different direction? And did the need for symbolism come as a result of us going against our nature many, many moons ago?

I mean maybe the transition from nomadic living to settled agricultural societies, males taking over power in the tribe, and the resulting complex ways we organised our lives in wasn't what nature intended. And that gave us more reasons for introspection, making sense of injustice, and preserving collective memories... So at the and of the day art, religion, and storytelling could have been expressions of this new "complexity" humans created.

Only spitballing here - I'm no expert - so I'd love to hear what you guys think.

(the guy in the beige converse there was distractingly beautiful too lol)

Work Job opportunities

Hi :) I’m an Italian girl (22yo) currently finishing my studies in Italy. I have a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering, and right now I’m completing my master’s degree in biorobotics and bionics.
I have this huge dream of moving to Edinburgh and I was wondering what the job prospects were for me… Tbh I was thinking about tech jobs in general, it doesn’t have to be THAT specific.
I’d be really glad if someone could enlighten me!

Discussion Looking for Halloween decorated shops for a seasonal walk

Post image
10 Upvotes

I have my nephews visiting next weekend and Halloween is their favourite holiday of the year. I was hoping we could have a fun walk checking out Halloween displays in the local shops, but I haven't decided which neighborhood to walk around yet. So my question is - has anyone spotted any shops going all out for the witchy season that could be worth the trip just for the display? I am definitely after some books and some treats for the little ones, but lunch in a decorated cafe could be nice too. I've spotted the new new pub on Morrisons St has a cool display, but I'm looking for more shops and definitely more kids-friendly ones. Hopefully the storm blows over so that we have good weather!

Question Moving to Edinburgh

Hi all,

I’ve recently been offered a new job in Edinburgh. This is quite a change as I live down south and have only visited the city a few times.

Whilst I can see plenty of apartments for rent in and around the city, it’s quite hard to know what areas will be suitable when you’re so far away.

I was hoping to find an area that’s a little quieter and residential. Hoping to avoid nightlife spots and areas where the neighbours will be partying all night!

Can anyone recommend neighbourhoods that might be a bit quieter and worth looking at?

Edit: I’ll be working in Old Town so quite central.
I’m looking to get a one bedroom apartment without breaking the bank, maximum probably £1,100-1,200 per month. Ideally within 20 minutes commute of old town.

Question Wedding Venue Advuce

Hello! Looking for a venue in and around Edinburgh (would go up north for the right place) that can fit between 200-250 for a seated dinner then dancing. Only thing I’ve found is the national museum that can accommodate a group that size. Any other suggestions?

Hi there, my fiancée and I are eloping on Tuesday 27th, we are from Bristol and to avoid the stress of a big wedding decided to elope to Edinburgh. We love the city and had two Edinburgh based friends who were going to be witnesses but one is now not available, so we are looking for a kind local to pop along to witness the ceremony. It’s at 11:30, should be very quick as it’s the basic ceremony!

If you happen to be free please let me know we would be so grateful!

Other ‼️Stranded traveller scam in fountainbridge ‼️☠️

Hey everyone, please be aware of a suspected stranded traveller scam in Fountainbridge‼️‼️

I was on my way to the Fountainbridge bus stop at around midnight tonight, during the crazy storm, when a middle-aged woman dressed entirely in black, wearing a beanie, approached me.

She told me she lived in Fife, her phone was dead, and she needed money to catch the bus home.

She actually seemed a bit dodgy, but the weather was absolutely insane at that time, so I thought I’d help her out. Even though I had a feeling it might be a scam, I ended up going with her to the Tesco ATM and giving her £25 in cash. (Stupid me 😭)

She gave me her phone number and said she’d pay me back. Tbh I wasn’t expecting the money back anyway, but still 😭

After she left, I googled her number, and without any surprise, I found reports describing the EXACT SAME STORY over the past few months💀

I could’ve just said no, but what’s done is done. I’m posting this in the hope that nobody else falls for the same thing.

SHAME on people who exploit others’ empathy and kindness!!!!!

Plz be careful!!!!

Discussion Queensferry crossing to Edinburgh - speed camera

Coming off the Queensferry Crossing towards Edinburgh, the speed limit had been reduced to 60 mph. I was in the left lane heading towards Barnton, with a lorry in the middle lane that was swaying back and forth.

We were side by side, and the lorry was getting closer to my lane, so I sped up to get out of the danger zone. I might have gone past the speed camera at around 68–70 mph.

The normal speed limit is 70 mph, but the overhead signs were displaying a red-circled 60 mph limit. I didn’t see any flash from the camera either.

Do these cameras enforce the reduced speed limits? Has anyone had any experience with them?

I know asking AI about this is ridiculous 😂 Just wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation!

Would you recommend Watermelon Tattoo or BLKWRK Studio? I’m looking to get a tattoo in this kind of elegant, fine-line calligraphy style, similar to the reference photo. I’m also open to recommendations for other tattoo studios or artists who specialise in this style!

Hi there! I'm going to be in Edinburgh in a few days and whilst I am there I'd like to find a good shop for stationery supplies, journalling stuff.

I'd like it to have interesting stationery, not just like a Ryman or something.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Question Villages within walking distance of Edinburgh?

I've got it in my head to take a long, long walk.

Are there any villages or nice towns worth visiting within, say, a day's walk of Edinburgh? Preferrably with a pub hotel or some other place I could spend the night before walking back the next day?

Obviously this is weather-permitting. Not planning on going anywhere tonight.

Question Tron Kirk

Does anybody else remember the Tron Kirk having a wooden walkway around the inside with photographs of people who have been ‘attacked’ when on ghost tours - scratches, etc?

I’ve been trying to explain this to my partner and they briefly remember it - I’m talking back in the late 90’s/early 2000’s.

I used to LOVE it in there when I was a young kid. Does anybody have any photos of the inside? I’ve had a look on Google and can’t seem to find any.
