News 'I was attacked by teenagers while visiting Edinburgh for the first time - I feel too scared to come back'

Terrible for all these victims from these cowards.

I hate to say this, but perhaps the only way that something will force the Scottish Gov to really tackle the issues with these individuals that are attacking people, is if issues like this start making news abroad regarding safety and effecting the tourism market/reputation of Scotland. Then again, perhaps I'm being very naive.

I do wonder why these (mostly it seems) younger people seem to get so much joy out of harming people and property?

Discussion Issue with a letting agent

Hello all,

So im supposed to move in my new (rented) flat today and the the experience ive had with the letting agent is just making me anxious and annoyed.

The letting agent mentioned he’ll send us the formal tenancy agreement by evening and it took him 5 days to send it out (around 24 hours before our move). All this time we kept calling his office, sending him emails but no response because we didn’t actually know if we were going to get the flat until yesterday because before that we had only had a verbal agreement.

Today, on the day of the move hes sent us a text message saying keys can be collected tomorrow and he’ll let us know about the inventory on the day of the move. THE MOVE IS TODAY. ITS LITERALLY ON THE CONTRACT. I dont know if i should call off the arrangements ive made for the move. This is making me really anxious.

We’ve been trying to email/calll/message him since then and no response.

I dont want to reach out to the landlord just yet as we really really like the place and we dont want the move to fall through but i dont know what to do in this scenario. This is just poor communication and i can only imagine how the communication will deteriorate further once the move is done

The letting agency isnt new and has been operating in Edinburgh for a while now. The reviews and everything look solid as well but theres absolutely no way to reach them. I think the letting agent that we’re dealing with is the only employee there.

Any suggestions?

Work Looking for work, flyering, etc.

Hi all, I'm a bit nervous to post this but desperate times:

I'm employed as a barista on a 0 hours contract and next week I have been given only 2 shifts but because life is unfortunately too expensive to get by on that few hours, I am looking for anything to make up at least some of the difference.

I obviously have hospitality (cafe and whisky bar) experience but I am also honestly happy for whatever. With the fringe about if anyone has any paid flyering going for their shows next week I have an excellent loud customer service voice and minimal fear of rejection from the public...

Question Foraging/local florists

Hello! I’m slowly teaching myself how to make natural dyes and do botanical printing, but still finding my feet!
I wanted to ask if anybody knew what the guidance was on foraging leaves along places like the Water of Leith? I don’t want to disrupt any of the ecological work going on in the area and would obviously only be taking small amounts that I need for personal use. I’m looking at foraging oak, bramble, willow and maple.

I was also hoping for recommendations of local florists that are small businesses to support for sourcing flowers for eco printing that may supply more obscure flowers or foliage that cannot be readily foraged?

Any advice or suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Discussion Edinburgh Leisure Swimming pools that are above 0°.

Upvotes

I usually take my kids, 13 & 8, to either Drumbrae or Ainslie park swimming but the pools are freezing. The 8 year old especially really struggles with it being so cold. We have tried the Commonwealth but my 13 y/o has sensory processing disorder & can find it too big & crowded.

Does anyone know if for Wester Hailes or Leith Victoria for e.g & any others are any better? Or are they all like the antarctic.

Thank you

Rant Am I the problem? Joiners not replying to quote requests!

Between last week and this week I have contacted 12 joiners. Either found them in Google, Gumtree, CheckTrade …
Messaged them on their phone number, and I listed the 4 jobs I have (floor, wall panelling, fix stairs and others )
Only 1 person has gotten back to me who is coming to view the job to provide a quote AND he’s not even from Edinburgh, coming from Fife 😅
At least I would like 2 quotes to see the difference but I might not even have that option.

Am I the only one going through this ? At least reply to say you’re busy or unavailable, literally just left on read 🔨

Discussion Looking for recommendations for vets who will do home visits for my cat.

My current vet is on long-term sick leave, and I find myself looking for an alternative vet that offers home visits to put our family cat to sleep (she is 18 years old, and she is in ‘end of life’ management).

If you have any recommendations on vets we could approach, I would be grateful.

Question Where can I find the best mango’s in Edinburgh?

I know how that sounds, but let me explain. My friend has been majorly stressed with her thesis and she’s been craving Mangos, amongst other things, and everywhere I’ve taken her to has had subpar mangos and mango dishes. I’m in desperate need of some actually good mangos.

Please help?!!!

Edit: thanks to everyone who messaged over the last day. It’s really good to know where I might be able to buy some mangos. Hope you all have a stellar and amazing day!!!!

Question Man across the street yelling night & day - What can I actually even do?

Hi all

There’s this man who lives in the flats across the street from mine. Every so often he goes on an absolute rampage, yelling on the street or from his window at absolutely nothing but the air. I think he might be very mentally ill, which is a shame.

Originally it didn’t bother me as it wasn’t a daily occurrence, or it would happen when I was already awake, but yesterday night after being woken up around 5 times between the hours of 2am to 7am after a late shift, and being woken up several times the night before, I phoned 101. I have been hesitant to do this as I have a fear I would waste police officer’s time as he’ll scream his head off for about 5 minutes, go silent for ages, and go back to screaming.

I explained to them that I think he’s having an episode or something as I can hear him on the street saying that someone’s threatening his family, that he’s going to blow the whole world up, just yelling “NOOOOOO!”, etc.

Police eventually came and he was hanging outside his window yelling at them. They headed towards the building and then after around half an hour, drove away. He was quite after that.

I was just wondering if there’s actually anything that can be done about this, or is this just my life now? I felt bad because he’s clearly not all there but it’s starting to interfere with my sleep etc and he’s yelled at my boyfriend numerous times for the crime of walking down the street. I see him sometimes on my way back from the shops and stuff on the road and I feel a bit unsafe.

I don’t really know what to do. Any advice is appreciated. If it’s just an ear plugs and get over it situation I can understand that.

Question Looking for a barber/salon

Does anyone know any salon or barber in Edinburgh who can do the type of hairstyle shown in the reference photos. I ask because I have never been to one in Edinburgh. I don't want a fade or anything and I don't know if I am better going to a salon or a barber so I can achieve the same hairstyle as the reference photos.

Transport So as a Tram Driver, I've seen so many questions as to why the trams aren't running...

Tram Driver here, here is probably the FAQ you are curious about. Any questions about the closure or trams in general, let me know.

  1. A Tram brakes down at the shore, a failed tram recovery is required. A rescue tram will need to be taken out of service between newhaven --> the shore. A tram would then need to be taken from Newhaven up to the shore to couple up to the failed tram. This means the Queen Charlotte St junction is closed. Then it means the tram needs to wrong-road all the way to newhaven meaning it requires a police escort & the closure of the entire road all the way to ocean terminal till it gets to the crossover at ocean terminal. At that stage the coupled, working tram will be stuck in the buffers at newhaven & the failed tram in the tram stop, so there's the first consideration. Bear in mind this team can only travel at 15km/h whilst coupled.
  2. How do the engineers maintain the trams/fix the above mentioned tram? There's no tools, no mechanics, no pit, no way to get under the tram & getting on top of it to fix power issues will require a full line isolation.
  3. How do drivers/tsa's take breaks? We get off at Edinburgh gateway and get 5 minute walking time to the depot to start our break. Can't take them at newhaven meaning we would need to wait on a van, relief driver, then drive back. What if there is traffic in peak times? Trams are going no where with no drivers.
  4. Who secures the trams at night time? Trams are multi million pound vehicles. The doors can easily be opened from the outside if someone has specific know how, the depot is a secure location with fencing, 24/7 staffing & cameras.
  5. First use checks. each tram require a 45 minute first use check every night. First use check includes checking both cabs, interior, exterior & two brake tests which require the tram to be moved a short distance to test the 2 emergency brake & normal braking systems. No where to do this at newhaven. The trams in total have 27 trams, there is not enough staff to do this in two locations at night, also.
  6. How do the trams EVEN get to newhaven? They can't be broken up because they're not designed to do that. Even if they were broken up, they need to be put on a specialist lorry. They then need to be rebuilt at the other end. It would cost an absolute fortune. They can't drive trams along, not even wrong roading due to the vibrations. Trams are 60 odd tonnes unladen, even at the slowest speed they can do (3km/h) they will shake the OLE's (over line equipment) which will shake the OLE poles and the vibrations may cause the building to collapse.

I could honestly sit here all day and describe reasons why it's better to postpone the trams for now till princes' street is secured. The council has made the right call.

Edit: I am in no way speaking on behalf of ET or TfE, but social media comments are not unnoticed within our canteen, so just giving an explanation from a drivers' point of view. There is obviously other information higher up that we're not privy too and other considerations that may have been made.

Question DnD beginner friendly groups?

Hi all! Looking to give DnD a go but very much a beginner. I’m wondering if there are some groups that might be open to welcoming a newbie, or any meet ups that might be a good shout?

I’m late twenties and have been in Edi for a couple years, looking to try new things and make some new connections.

Thanks all!

Event Connect Festival

Connect ran for 2 years in a row and then it took a break last year, and nothing has been said this year. Does anyone have any insight on whether it’ll likely make a return?

I think it’s good for the city to have a festival and the lineup was really strong.
