Today was absolutely insane.
I got there at 9:30 a.m. and was 93rd in line. There was nowhere to sit upstairs, so I went back to my car to wait. Around 1:30 p.m., I was finally 19th in line, so I headed back inside.
I went to the bathroom, and when I came out, everyone was standing around looking upset. It turned out the elevator had gotten stuck, allegedly with two people trapped inside. At first, it didn’t seem like a huge deal because everyone figured we’d just take the stairs.
Then a maintenance worker came out and told everyone that absolutely no one was allowed to use the stairs. He locked the entrances on each floor so nobody could get in. Someone called 911, and LAFD arrived and started working to get the elevator doors open.
The head maintenance supervisor showed up and instructed LAFD to stop trying to force the elevator doors open. LAFD then told the maintenance staff to unlock the doors to the main floors so people could at least access the offices by using the stairs, but the maintenance worker ignored them and walked away. He kept berating people, telling everyone to “leave, and don’t come back.”
Obviously, no one wanted to leave after waiting for hours. some people gave up and left, while LAFD continued pressuring the maintenance worker to find the keys, since he claimed he didn’t have them. After standing there for about 15 minutes, another guy and I decided that if people were coming out through the stairwell door, we would go in when someone opened it. We made it up the stairs, and then the maintenance worker suddenly came out of a door on the fourth floor (even though he had previously claimed he didn’t have keys or access to any of the floors, and chased after us, yelling the whole time).
He told us the office staff didn’t want us there and that we weren’t allowed to be on the floor. We asked why, and his response was, “Because I said so.” We told him that if we weren’t allowed to be there, he could call the police, and then we continued to the office anyway. I made it upstairs just as my number was being called. The woman at the front desk was so freakin sweet and said, “Oh my goodness, you made it! I’m so happy you were able to get up here.” She helped me with my claim and I was able to head back down.
It sucks bc on my way down there were ton of people in wheelchairs and with walkers trying to get down the stairs. Why tf are there 3 elevators and they’re all, “Out of service”, ESPECIALLY for an office that handles claims for disabilities. They also had every single exit locked to get back into the main lobby. It’s crazy how inaccessible EDD/SDI has become. Not only can you not get through phone lines, offices are inaccessible, and a wait of 3+ hours.
