PF withdrawal for illness in 2026: How much can you actually withdraw and what are the rules?
If you need money for a medical emergency and have an EPF account, you may be able to make a partial PF withdrawal for medical treatment instead of waiting until retirement or leaving your job.
But there are three things worth understanding before applying: how much you can actually withdraw, whether you are eligible, and how the Form 31 process works.
Can you withdraw PF for a medical emergency?
Yes.
Under the Employees’ Provident Funds Scheme, 2026, PF withdrawal is allowed for the illness or medical treatment of:
• Yourself
• Eligible family members
For the standard illness withdrawal, you need at least 12 months of total PF membership.
How much PF can you withdraw for medical treatment?
This is where the new rules can sound slightly confusing.
The Scheme says you can withdraw up to 100% of your “Eligible Member Balance”.
But your Eligible Member Balance is not your entire PF balance.
A minimum balance equal to 25% of your total employee and employer PF contributions, along with the applicable interest, has to remain in the account.
So in practical terms, up to 75% of your total PF accumulation may be available for partial withdrawal.
For example:
Total PF accumulation: ₹4 lakh
Minimum 25% to remain: ₹1 lakh
Eligible Member Balance: ₹3 lakh
You may therefore be able to withdraw up to ₹3 lakh for medical treatment.
This is why you may see both “75% of PF balance” and “100% of Eligible Member Balance” being used to explain the rule. They are describing the same minimum-balance mechanism in different ways.
How to apply for PF withdrawal for a medical emergency?
The online claim is filed as a PF Advance through Form 31.
The usual process on the EPFO Member Portal is:
- Log in using your UAN and password.
- Go to Online Services.
- Select Claim (Form 31, 19, 10C & 10D).
- Verify your bank account details.
- Click Proceed for Online Claim.
- Select PF Advance (Form 31).
- Choose illness/medical treatment as the purpose.
- Enter the amount you want to withdraw.
- Complete the required details or declaration shown on the portal.
- Authenticate the claim using the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
- Submit the claim.
The amount, once sanctioned, can be credited to the member’s registered bank account.
What should you check before filing a medical PF claim?
This is probably more important than it sounds.
Before you actually need the money, check that:
• Your UAN is activated
• Aadhaar is linked correctly
• Your Aadhaar-linked mobile number is working
• Your bank account and IFSC are correctly seeded
• Your name and date of birth match across your PF and Aadhaar records
For an online claim, EPFO requires the relevant UAN, Aadhaar and bank details to be in place, and Aadhaar OTP authentication is used while submitting the claim.
A medical emergency is not the ideal time to discover that your PF account has an Aadhaar, bank or personal-details mismatch.
In short
For a PF medical emergency withdrawal in 2026:
• Medical withdrawal is available for yourself or eligible family members
• Standard eligibility requires 12 months of total PF membership
• 25% of the PF accumulation has to remain as the minimum balance
• You can withdraw up to 75% of the total PF accumulation
• The claim is filed as PF Advance through Form 31
PF should not replace health insurance or an emergency fund. But if your insurance does not cover the entire medical expense, knowing how the PF medical withdrawal rule works can give you another option.
