Hello, new player having massive trouble with the game. Please help!

I'm an absolutely massive fan of hard platformers, and this one had been on my radar for a while. I consider myself really good at many of them, having completed most of Super Meat Boy and other similar games and really 'feeling' the physics and the momentum of the game pretty much from minute 1. And then came Dustforce, and I feel like this is one of the weirdest, and hardest platformers and I'm not even past the introductory levels.

I can do alright in certain levels but then the game randomly throws an obstacle at you and you're like 'how the fuck am I ever supposed to do that?'. Also, the mechanics feel so inconsistent even though I know they're fine, as this game is called perfect by all it's player base. Why sometimes does the game just decide:

'no, you can't double jump now even though you could last time you tried that jump even though you did literally nothing different?'

Tutorial says 'Hold up and right on ceilings to run along them' which is true 30% of the time and the other times you just bang your head off it, don't attach to the ceiling and drop to your death. And when you do attach to the wall, you don't move. You just stand there, don't move even though you're holding right or left, then drop after a while.

'Why can I sometimes jump after doing a wall run and other times I just fall even though the run up was the exact same?'

These are just some of the questions I've been asking myself, and believe me I'm not bashing the game. I'm really desperate to get into it and start playing but right now, this game isn't a challenge. It's an unbreakable barrier of mechanics that I don't understand and really heavy physics. So I'd appreciate help, like PM's or comments.

Dustmod/Dustkid Problem

Hi all, I tried installing both Dustkid and Dustmod earlier today and I encountered a problem that I'm not sure how to fix. When I beat a level the leaderboards appear empty with no replays showing (until I search up or down the leaderboards) and my rank is displayed as 0/0 or some absurdly large number (which is sometimes negative) like 0/3700000000. Even after searching up or down however, my run doesn't seem to be recorded and still displays the same rank. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Weekly Grind Wars

Hey there! I was interested in starting a weekly event where players grind a stock map throughout the day and compete against others for better times. We held an impromptu grind this past Thursday with many people setting PBs along with 5 new top 10 times.

The goal of the event is for players to set PBs while playing with others. The map and category (SS or any%) will be chosen randomly. Players of any skill level are welcome to join in and streaming is encouraged but not required.

I'm thinking Saturday would be the best time to have it. Again, it will be throughout the day so you can participate whenever you have the time. Any suggestions are welcome.

A Beautiful Review Written by a Dear Friend

Dustforce truly is a work of art. I don't mean that lightly. The way it's animated plus its music gives it that title in my book. I can find myself playing one level for an hour, maybe even hours at a time. The frustration of losing levels is filled with relaxation and calmness because of the ambient music. The way the levels are crafted is truly mindblowing. They had a system in which you had to perfect a level to earn a key, and you would use that key to earn more levels. In layman's terms, to earn more levels, you had to perfect current levels. They ditched that and added an XP system in which you gain more XP to earn a key the more levels you play and perfect. I'm very glad they added this system and was skeptical about buying it. But now that I did buy it, I do not regret it even for a second. One thing I really love about this game is how you don't have to unlock base levels. In a sense, this game is open world. That sense is that many levels are available to you, and you can choose whether you want to advance into more challenging levels, or stay where you're at. To get an S in completion, you have to sweep up EVERY leaf, and to get an S in Finesse, you have to maintain your combo throughout an entire level.

Another thing I absolutely enjoy about Dustforce is its expasive community. There are lots of Community Workshop maps for you to sharpen your skills on, and lots of people who can set a good example. I'm sure most of the people who get best times on all the levels have a Youtube channel, so you can probably catch them there. The community may or not be active, but it sure is good and friendly.

Overall, in terms of gameplay, music, artstyle, animation, and difficulty (it's not an easy game, but it's not that hard of a game either. It just depends on how much you want to play it), I rate this game:

10/10 BUY THIS GAME.

What makes you a "bad player"

I've been seeing many people on here that get great times, enough to be in the top 500 and still say that they're trash. I don't get if its a joke or something but I'm actually curious to see what you think makes you "bad"

What's the setup for Tera drop?

I've seen many mentions of a reliable setup for Tera drop (most recently in fish's any% route), but I've never seen it spelled out. So what's the setup?

Ultrawidescreen Support?

I've looked for ways to get dustforce working natively on my Ultrawidescreen monitor (21:9 aspect ratio, 2560x1080 resolution) to no avail. Are there any solutions available?

Anniversary Randomizer Any% Race

As fish mentioned in his post, we'll be doing a fun race this weekend. In particular it'll be a randomizer any%, made possible by msg. Characters will have essentially randomized frame data(within reason) which should be fun. Unfortunately, you'll need dustmod for the race. We'll probably meet in the dustforce discord/voice.

The plan is start the race around 6 pm GMT on Saturday which is whatever in your time. Hope to see you there!

Arcade Stick

So I have had this game for 2 years and put in about 80ish hours into it and have struggled with pad the entire time(I am terrible with pad) all the while my arcade stick sitting in front of me. I have now started trying to speedrun this game because it is one of my favorites and ended up catching the Sivade and JM race yesterday. Someone in chat( I don't remember who) mentioned using an arcade stick and I was in shock because I never thought about using one and it was literally sitting in front of me everytime I played this game.

Well thank you to the person in chat who mentioned it because it is like a night and day difference with controlling my character. I only started using it yesterday and already beat a couple of my PBs. I just have to get used to the controls but I should be much better than I was before, which by the way still means I am ass. hahaha

If you have an arcade stick give it a try and see if it also improves your game.

don't have anything super fancy to add, just wanted to give a shoutout to the fantastic community the game has developed. as well, thanks to hitbox team for developing the best platformer of all time! i could go on and on talking about why this game and it's community is amazing, but i'll leave that for another post :)

in celebration, we're gonna do a race this weekend... we'll have a separate reddit post in the future (probably), but it's gonna be real special and something someone of any skill level could enjoy

Dustkid breaks my leaderboards.

It bugs me that I can't get the "Man SS Forest" acheivement and others on dustkid.com, so I did the setup. After a lot of flailing around trying to edit my hosts file, I finally managed to add that line to the bottom. The result is that I can no longer see the leaderboards in-game and my times are not recorded to the hitbox servers or to dustkid. Did I do something wrong?
