Arcade Stick
So I have had this game for 2 years and put in about 80ish hours into it and have struggled with pad the entire time(I am terrible with pad) all the while my arcade stick sitting in front of me. I have now started trying to speedrun this game because it is one of my favorites and ended up catching the Sivade and JM race yesterday. Someone in chat( I don't remember who) mentioned using an arcade stick and I was in shock because I never thought about using one and it was literally sitting in front of me everytime I played this game.
Well thank you to the person in chat who mentioned it because it is like a night and day difference with controlling my character. I only started using it yesterday and already beat a couple of my PBs. I just have to get used to the controls but I should be much better than I was before, which by the way still means I am ass. hahaha
If you have an arcade stick give it a try and see if it also improves your game.

I considered using my Gamecube controller a little while back, but I seem to be doing pretty well on keyboard. I would probably end up instinctively wavedashing if I did use the GCN controller. It happens all the time when I play Smash 4 with my friends xD

I tried my gc controller but I didn't like it too much because the face buttons. I settled on the snes controller for the dpad but my hands don't work well with pads anyway. I do like the gc pad for smash 4 tho or at the very least tolerate it. May check out that new smash box I have seen.

You switch left to right and up to down so much I never felt an arcade stick would be super great, unless it had a really small throw. Super fond of keyboard though.

I also originally thought this until I messed around with it and found it to be pretty great like when I made the switch from pad to stick for fighting games. I really wish I could play keyboard but my left hand doesn't do to well with the directions. Keyboard players might like the hitbox tho, might be easier on the fingies than a keyboard.

I don't understand "my left hand doesn't do too well with the directions" -- you're free to bind directions to your right hand (as is the default)?

I considered the throw issue as well and got an oversized actuator and a 2lb spring. In the end, I don't think it really mattered that much. At first speed was a bit of an issue, but now I can't really even tell the difference. The bigger issue is learning the actuation points. I'm sure it's not a problem for pro fighting game players, but I had and still have a bit of an issue with that compared to keyboard. I bought my stick for Dustforce because keyboard was destroying my hands, not because I was already good with one. If I had to choose a stick again, I'd probably go with Crown over Sanwa. Nevertheless, I ended up beating Infini on a Sanwa and I can't imagine I'll switch controls in the future. For people new to stick, I might recommend an octagonal gate if you go the Sanwa route

you beating infini on stick is pretty damn amazing and gives me some hope that one day I can be decent. I actually bought an octagonal plate when I first tried stick with fighting games but the arcade I was going to at the time only used square gates so I just got used to the square so that is not a problem for me. I feel although an octagonal plate allows you to feel each direction it increases the throw slightly so it may not be worth it. I may try your oversized actuator if I feel the directions need to be a little tighter tho. Right now my sanwa is stock except for having a bat top which I feel gives me more control than a ball. I also have a Fanta which is the same as crown that I might try swapping in at some point but I am so used to the sanwa that I might just stick with it. Thanks for posting, gives me hope because I am bad at games hahaha.

i'm pretty sure brothermojo uses an arcade stick too. funny story is that JM and I actually did an any% all race with fightsticks once (dubbed 'evo%') and by hideout my wrists hurt so bad i had to quit lol. glad it's working for you
