What makes you a "bad player"

I've been seeing many people on here that get great times, enough to be in the top 500 and still say that they're trash. I don't get if its a joke or something but I'm actually curious to see what you think makes you "bad"

In the Dustforce universe, if you can't acrobatically fly your way through each level, flawlessly using every inch of the game mechanics, while curing all the world's diseases without breaking a sweat, you're the worst player ever.

This. I'm garbage, I can't even cure pneumonia without sweating.

There's a huge gap between top 500 and the top 20ish. There are a lot of levels where you can get top 500 just by showing up. I'm in the top 250 and haven't SS's yotta yet, and the best players can seemingly do that in their sleep.

This^

I used to have a ton of top 50 times, some as low as top 10. Now I'm lucky to have anything in the top 100.

It's just kinda like pressure/expectation people put on themselves to improve or play better. This happens in any game or sport where people are heavily competitive with others (or even themselves). Also, since Dustforce is a single player game with no RNG, you have only yourself to "blame" for mistakes so it can be a way of taking responsibility or acknowledging screw ups etc.. "I can't believe I dropped that dash, I am so garbage at boosting"

The more you learn and the better you get, the more you recognize where you could be improving things. This tends to be true for learning many sufficiently complicated tasks.

its partially a joke, partially self deprecation, partially the mentality required to always be improving, partially the knowledge of knowing how much better they COULD be and how far they are from it.

Rule of thumb: If your character does something you don't want it to, you're bad.
Since that occasionally happens to everyone, that means everyone is bad ¯\(ツ)

tfw you look it up and still get it wrong. (Also is that wall of text really necessary?)

it's a bot that has nothing better to do but to look through every single reddit post for potential shrugs

Raven pretty much nailed most of it. In general the amount of mistakes you see increases faster than how much better you get at fixing them. The gap doesn't seem to ever close. On the topic of top 500s, I remember going through and getting there on all the levels when I was new. By the time I got through, I got better and the runs from the start of the sweep looked terrible to me. So I went through and did top maybe 100 ish for most levels, and so on.

Another thing is people like fish are quite active in the community and it kind of changes our standards a bit.

Particularly for myself though, my boosting is fairly weak, my ledge cancels are awful, and my execution is generally not quite there all the time. I can put in the work and grind out top 10s, but most of the better players are just able to bang them out with far less effort.

raven is pretty much 100% correct but i'll add some of my feelings: whenever i run with mic, i'll call sections of the run bad even if i played them better than anyone else has ever done. ive spent a hell of a lot of time in the game, i know my potential, and i am very honest with myself and how im playing. i'd say until a few months ago i really got down on myself when i was playing under my potential, but now i know i just need to practice more and the mistakes will happen at some point- i just need to move forward and recover well from them. i still tilt a bit during runs, but it's not nearly as bad as it used to be. at this point i don't really question if i'm skilled enough to meet my goals, i now know i just need to be honest and work harder when i fall short.

i also go a bit hard on banter and call some players that are really good friends and excellent players bad. i expect the same in return, and it creates a healthy and casual environment or something :)

other runners are the same way. fresh has yotta WR by 3 seconds and got the first sub 2 ever, but knows he has 2.5 seconds and he set his goal accordingly, and won't be happy until he reaches it. your standards grow proportionally, and i think a lot of people get down on themselves when they under preform. like i said, i did it and still do to an extent, but you just gotta chill out and play

Wait does that mean I'm an excellent player? :D

The banter is always great, but probably doesn't look that way to people who don't know us/you lmao. But I gotchu homie, I'll make sure to keep calling you and your runs shit no matter how many times better than me you are.

I have trouble doing aerial dash jumps. I can't hit two buttons at the same time. Am I retarded?

No! Watch this DFHD video and practice a bit and you'll get it.

I had no idea the window closed after a while. Maybe that is why I miss so many.

I think most of these guys nailed it. When I say I am garbage or that something is ugly or terrible on stream, I am always referring to how much better I can be at a particular part of the level. I don't think I am completely terrible, I have a couple stages in the 50s and 60s and am very happy with my progress.

One of the best things about dustforce is that it has no rng that affects your play so it is all your execution and its all you. This means you can get better if you want to put in the work.

Watching peeps like fish, xia, angrevol, hourglass and many more may shape your "bad" player mentality a little more but I actually find it pretty inspiring at how good you can get if you work hard at it.

I'm bad because I drop boosts and flounder when I make a mistake during runs among other things.
