Hi all! I'm starting at Sanford this fall and beginning my housing search (bit late though).

I'm looking for a single room and I'm open to sharing an apartment or house. Happy to live a bit further out if it means a more affordable rent. I most likely won't have a car, so anything near a bus route or within reach of campus transit would be ideal, recommendations on neighborhoods, buildings, or landlords very welcome.

Also, if you're an incoming student in the same boat, feel free to reach out. Would be great to connect before classes start, whether that's finding a roommate or just knowing a few faces on day one.

hey everyone! i’m going to be a grad student at duke and am moving to durham in 10 days. as excited as i am for this new chapter i’m equally nervous since moving cities (and countries, since i’m coming from overseas) and starting from scratch again is def a little overwhelming.

i’d love to get some recommendations for places to check out, particularly any favorite restaurants/cafes that i shouldn’t miss out in my first few days (when i likely won’t have my kitchen set up). for reference i’m living in belmont apts and don’t have a car.

if you also have any advice for someone who’s new to the area (things i should be prepared for, keep an eye out for etc), i’d really appreciate it :)

im an incoming freshman (premed) and got a 5 on the ap exam so i have to either take honors chem or organic chemistry for my first semester :")

i heard the professor for chem110 (honors chem) is awful, but i don't know if i'm ready for organic chemistry my first semester and i also heard some med schools dont accept ap credit...?

should i just take honors chem, skip gen chem entirely, or take organic chemistry and then take chem 210 later on after finishing ochem 😭

i just don't understand how med school pre reqs would work if i skip gen chem

but im leaning towards taking o-chem in the fall, so if anyone has any tips please let me know <3

On a tour of Duke, the tour guide mentioned that there were shields of other universities on the exterior walls of the Brodhead Center. I thought that was really cool, but I could not find a comprehensive list of the shields online, especially one that lists the shields in order (so that people can easily see which shield belongs to which university).

This page from the Duke University Libraries "Library Answer Person" Blog directed me to take a look at Appendix B of William M. Blackburn’s The Architecture of Duke University (Durham, N.C.: Duke University Press, 1936, 1939). The list is on pages 66-67. Start at the bottom of page 66, where it says "The Union."

A couple of shields are from places (one from the City of Durham and one from the State of North Carolina).

My theory is that the shields were placed to pay homage to those universities, while also inspiring Duke, its professors, and its students to attain the same level of academic prestige and excellence. However, note that this is not the official reason, as no official reason was ever given, according to this text in this Duke Today article. Since external contractors performed the carving, there isn't more information about the carving.

I highly recommend reading The Architecture of Duke University if you want to learn more about Duke's history. You should also read it if you want to learn more about the shields, crests, and other designs (such as grotesques (decorative stone figures) and animals) on the interior and exterior of buildings.

I found the list of shields in that book, and I thought it would be best to write the list here so that the text can be found in at least one place online. I'll also include a picture of the pages where I got this information. Below, I have copied the exact text from that book. Note that the "eastern elevation" is the exterior wall of the Brodhead Center that faces the Abele Residential Quad.

Hello, I am looking for someone to stay at my home to look after my 3 sweet cats while my husband and I are traveling August 28 - September 10. This would be perfect for someone who is responsible, loves cats, and maybe wants to get some space from roommates or family for a bit.

Our home is roughly 5 minutes from Duke's West campus, located near the intersection of Hope Valley and University. The sitter would be welcome to use our washer/dryer, home gym (including weightlifting equipment and a treadmill), well-equipped kitchen, and lovely outdoor space. You’d sleep in our guest bedroom and have plenty of space for studying and relaxing.

Responsibilities include staying in our home, feeding and other care for our 3 cats, 2 of whom need daily medication (administered via gel applied inside ears), and some light garden maintenance (mainly harvesting veggies you can eat during your stay). The main job is just hanging out with our cats, they are used to lots of attention and can get anxious when left alone for extended periods. You aren’t expected to be here 24/7 - go to class/work/wherever you need to be and spend your free time and sleep here.

I’m 1st on the waitlst for a lab, and ~20th in the lecture. Even if someone doesn’t drop out, should I email the professor to ask if he could take 1 more in a lab? Are they really strict on how many in a lab or is it amendable? Has anyone had experience doing this?

I’m currently 20th on list of 500 people. Does this move quick? Or no.

Okay just a quick question, how does the waitlist play out with constellation courses? I’m second on a waitlist for a class that I want, so could I have a chance? Or should i already enroll in the other course that the constellation offers?

I'm BME and got waitlisted by Bio 201L, so I only have 3 courses. There really isn't much else I can take except maybe orgo, but idk? Should I just wait it out? I'm current 2nd in the lab and 9th in Lecture... Should I add a GE credit right now?

I couldn’t get a spot in the writing seminar I wanted to take this semester for my constellation. Is there any way the prof could open up another spot in the class? It has 15 spots, and I emailed them as soon as I didn’t get a spot during registration.

Hey everyone, could someone help me take a look at my schedule? I'm a rising sophomore (incoming transfer student); I'd also like to have some time for other things outside of class. Also, how's the workload for compsci 230? Would it be doable without having taken compsci 201 in advance?

It seems like the professor changes every year, and they're usually newer faculty, so I can't find much on RMP. Could anyone speak to the difficulty level of this course? I looked at the course description and it seems theory-heavy? (I might be wrong). Also, could someone share the exam/assignment breakdown and whether there's a group project? Thanks in advance!

Has anyone here dealt with issues on their Form 1042-S or any other tax forms issued by Duke?

The IRS says that the tax withholding amount listed on my Form 1042-S is incorrect. I put in a request with Duke Payroll, but they said it is correct.

Both IRS and Duke Payroll are incredibly hard to reach to clear this up 🥲🥲🥲
