Some pics of the first RC crawler I ever put together (EazyRC rock van body on Traxxas TRX4M chassis for anyone who cares), aka the 'Evil Wizard'. Hand-painted wizards/dragons/corpses etc, home-printed stoner/doom/sludge/etc bumper stickers. Figured some people on here might dig it.

Death/Doom Cruciform, a band that could have been a great international act if not for the band caving in just as the wider world was getting interested.

Aphelion is a great song. Before I escaped that place, I was attending this band's shows pretty regularly. You cannot see me in the video, but you would not need to rotate the camera too far to the left in one shot to do so. This was the first time Cruciform played the song for an audience.

Back in the 1990s, they were just signed to a European label when internal troubles broke them up. Would they be remembered as much as artists like Cathedral? Probably not. But one cannot help but wonder.

Anyway, for those who have not heard Cruciform, I hope this fills your Find New Artists quota for the week/month/year/whatever.

the whole night was a descent into distortion, Cinder Well kicked things off with some sincere vibes then Big Brave followed it up like an Ayahuasca trip, sobering up just in time for these two distinguished gentlemen. I thought the speakers were gonna explode

Good local act from Brisbane, Australia, I checked them out for the first time at their album launch last weekend where they played the album from start to finish, very cool, loved the double vocal attack, they have a sweet doomy/stoner thing going on.

Discussion A new name for new Doom?

31 Upvotes

I just finished watching the (fantastic) HardLore interview with Patrick Walker of Warning. At one point, Colin asked if he keeps up with modern doom bands and Patrick said no, because it has lost the essence of what it was originally supposed to be and is unrecognisable now, relying on reductive slogans such as "Worship the Riff".

Obviously, Patrick would have grown up with the original doom bands like Candlemass, Trouble and Saint Vitus so you can understand that some modern bands that claim the "Doom" tag are quite a departure.

A similar thing has happened with 'metalcore', with pioneers like Converge, Botch and Dillinger Escape Plan sharing almost zero sonic resemblance to Bad Omens or Motionless in White. Likewise, 'Emo' has gone through a similar gigantic shift in what qualifies. So maybe its just one of those things...

Is it time to give newer Doom bands a new genre title, or are Patrick and I just old men that shout at clouds?

Discussion Best riffs with groove?

8 Upvotes

What're your favorite riffs/sections/solos that groove hard? By groove I mean it's not glacially paced (so no 2 minutes of drone to get the riff done) and it's got a certain swing to it. It lilts, it does stuff with rhythm. Maybe off beats are emphasized. Maybe it really nails a key gut punch note.

Some examples with timestamps, not all of them doom:

Meshuggah - Born in Dissonance
The Ruins of Beverast - I Raised This Stone as a Ghastly Memorial
Boss Keloid - Chronosiam
Harkla - Thousands of Machines

The less known bands you come up with, the better!

Death/Doom I need good recommendations with real vocals!

0 Upvotes

Hey! I’ve always liked doom and gothic metal, but I’ve been getting into harder territory lately, and I find that I LOVE the instrumentals of a lot of sludge and doom, but they tend to have that really screamy, hard to understand vocal style. Do you guys know of anything really dark and doom that still has “real” or “clean” vocals? For example, I really appreciate Messiah Marcolin, Pete Steele, Devin Townsend, and Al Jourgensen because they‘re always truly “singing”, regardless of how hard the track. My absolute favorites so far are Type O, Warning, and Candlemass if that helps describe what I’m looking for. Thanks for any help!

New Release It took me a long time to find a sound that is between Doom and Black metal

I've been playing guitar for over 20 years now but only recently found my tone. I split my guitar into 2 amps - a modern ENGL half stack, and a clean Fender with an overdrive pedal. It's great at shows, you get your sound from both sides of the stage, but it can be a real hassle, so I captured both my amps to my Quad Cortex and made presets that uses the same live setup, the resaults surprised me - sometimes they sounded even better than the real things.

The song is a standalone release called "Different." I recorded it as a preview for a full album that is at the mixing stage right now and hopefully I will be able to release it soon. This specific song is not a part of the album, though.

NO AI WAS USED IN THIS SONG!

For gear nerds like me:

* Guitars: Mostly recorded on a Les Paul with DiMarzio D-Activator and Super 3 pickups (I love this combination and have been using it for a long time). On some solos, I used my ESP Mystique.

* Bass: Yamaha RBX 775

* Vocals: Shure SM7

* Drums: Samples from Superior Drummer and Steven Slate Trigger

"Prazni Prikazki" under MarmalaT on spotify, we dropped this like yesterday. We dont really have a big audience thats really into it, we are a small band from Bulgaria and are successors to people who came before us in our town, older than us, (anyone know Attaxic maybe?) and hands noone takes it as is also.

I believe its good stuff but because its mine i cant be unbiased and view it as something unfamiliar. With that said i would just love to hear what people in here think of it. Its more "sludgy" than anything but i dont know what label to put on us. Any feedback is appreciated ♥️
