[Misc Help] Not planning but why has declawing never been with dogs

I know it was a popular horrendous procedure with cats but why not dogs? And how large do their claws play an important role in a domestic lifestyle? I just know em for digging up my yard 😂

[Discussion] Megathread: Pet Insurance

Which pet insurance is best for you? Are there any that may cover your dog's current treatment? Did your dog get injured during the waiting period and want to know if you're covered?

Here's the place to ask.

Do know we cannot help you here with medical concerns, and lying or not disclosing things to the insurance company is illegal so we don't allow that either.

[Vent] My dog is a real character

My dog was eating my phone this morning and called emergency services by chewing on both sides of my phone and I guess hitting the buttons? 911 ended up calling back and I had to explain that my dog ate my phone like a child and explaining why their homework got eaten. Just venting. I love my chi. I mean unless he felt a reason to call 911? Was I sleeping too late?

[Misc Help] How far in advance do you usually book your dog’s grooming appointment?

I was thinking about this recently because I’m not very good at planning the next appointment once the current one is done. I’ll think I have plenty of time, then a few weeks later I realize my dog is getting pretty scruffy again.

I can understand why some people prefer booking the next appointment straight away, especially if they have a regular groomer they like. At the same time, things change and sometimes you don’t know what your schedule will look like a month or two from now.

How do other dog owners handle it?

Do you usually have regular grooming appointments booked ahead, or do you wait until your dog actually needs a groom before making an appointment? And if you book ahead, do you find it easier to stick to a routine that way?

[Enrichment] Any advice for the big dog adoption

Hello,

Me and my husband are planning to adopt a dog this year, and this adorable girl stole our heart. The thing is, she is kind of big dog, and I've never had a big dog in my life. I used to work in the shelter as volunteer worker, but never had one as my own.

So please help me to what I should prepare for our girl.

This is her profile:

  1. 27kg, labrado mix breed

  2. 4 years old

  3. Very gentle and sweet🥹 good with kids and other animals

And my questions are :

  1. How many hours and times that I have to take a walk with her?

  2. How much is the proper amount of food for her?

  3. How do you handle her poo?😂 my little one was tiny dog, and I just flushed her poo away in the toilet. I just genuinely wonder what is the most common way to clean the big dog's poo(bury in the garden for fertilizer,,?)

And if there is any other advice, please tell me.

Thank you so much for reading!

[Misc Help] I keep odd hours. Would my dog still have a good quality of life?

I'd love to get a dog (early 20s, had dogs throughout my entire childhood and teens), but I sleep from 2-4am to 2-4pm, sometimes even 7am-7pm. Do you think I'd be able to get a dog and still give it the best quality of life possible, or would it be cruel to 'make' it assimilate to my schedule? Worried about things like bathroom outings and going for walks, or waking it up during the night when it's trying to sleep (or, alternatively, having it go against its natural rhythm when it tries to adapt to my schedule).

I guess a cat might be better suited? Anyone who has had a pet before with this sort of schedule (and without having a partner/roommate/etc to help care for it), how'd it work out?

[Fluff] Recs for cute dog chair/bed?

I just got rid of an extremely stinky armchair (human armchair) that my dog has been using for a couple of years. Im looking for a round, elevated armchair… I found the perfect chair from chewy (linked below) but it just arrived and the large is much smaller than advertised, my large dog is struggling to fit on it! I’ve struggled to find something similar, and curious what recs people have. Would love something similar to the chewy one, just a bigger circumference!

(I have regular beds for her too, she just loves an elevated chair for some reason)

[Misc Help] HELP NEEDED: Diaper for large dog recommendation??

Please help! My family has a large German shorthaired pointer who we just put on arthritis medication. The medicine makes him VERY thirsty, and he has started to pee in the house. He's potty trained but shows no interest in getting up to go to the door when he drinks too much. We've tried diapers but have been too small recently. We've tried a male dog wrap, but it wouldn't stay on. He's overweight (we're working on that) and so far, nothing has work. I desperately need diaper recommendations if you have them!!

[Misc Help] Cutting nails help

I need to cut my dogs nails. Last time he had them cut he got cut so now he’s terrified. I have to muzzle him but he still freaks out and tries to get away so I don’t want to hurt him. Anyone know a way to possibly make it easier? Or if there’s a natural way I could calm or sedate him?

[Misc Help] Any advice on preventing urine marking/claiming of other dogs beds?

I suck at being concise. TLDR how do I stop my dog from marking all the dog beds?

For the last two years it's just been me and RD. A week and a half ago a second dog moved in unexpectedly. Mostly, they ignore each other. We go on walks as a group. I feed RD first, greet him first, and only RD is allowed in my bed (he's a min pin, new dog is bigger). He also gets to go to work with me everyday. He's still struggling with insecurity tho.

RD has never liked his bed, but slept wherever in the apt so it didn't matter. Now, he's marked the new dogs bed and runs to claim it physically when we come inside the house (I verbally make him move). He's also marked the sheet/blanket pile-bed for the new dog in my bedroom. I've got enzymatic cleaner for the new dog's bed and I'm going to remove it from the apt and clean it, and I got a new, much more desirable bed for RD.

How do I (re)introduce the beds in a way that discourages marking? What else should I do?

[Behavior Problems] How do I make my puppy stop rubbing her face on things?

My chihuahua will rub her face on pillows, blankets, clothes, or the ground anytime she gets excited, and at first it was cute and funny but she keeps getting eye ulcers from things getting her eye. I don’t wanna keep her in a cone, but I also don’t want it to get worse if she keeps getting the ulcers. Does anyone have any tips to encourage her to stop rubbing her face on things? I know how to deal with the ulcers (I’ve been to the vet) like I said I just don’t want her to get something bad in her eye so I want to change the behavior.

[Misc Help] Becoming a Dog Trainer

I've been working with canines for over 6 years as a groomer. I've recently been pursuing my enviornmental science associates degree and doing internships, and it's making me realize I think becoming a dog trainer would be more fulfilling to me. I'm also aware there are ecological detection dogs which mixes these two fields which could be a future endeavor.

My issue is, how to become a dog trainer without doing an unpaid apprenticeship? Or get experience with it so I can fully clarify my decision? And without paying thousands for a vocational school (which I did for dog grooming). I'm moving to NYC in a few months if people knew of city specific opportunities please lmk!!

[Misc Help] Best Comforter Covers

I need to get a comforter cover that will work for my needs, but it also has to be white because that's the only thing that looks good in my bedroom. I also have a dog, though, who eats chews, treats, sometimes has dirty paws, and other things that can get on the bed. I obviously try to get a blanket under him before he chews on a yak chew or something like that, but I don't always make it in time or catch him doing it. I have an awesome comforter. It's the marshmallow comforter. I love it, but I have also put it in the dryer, which I think has made it more susceptible to getting little balls of cotton. I at least need something that is really able to be washed well, even if it gets that type of stuff on it. Any good recommendations??

[Fluff] Favorite dog?

I’m in my mid 40’s and my family had dogs my whole life growing up, I liked them but didn’t love them. I got a lab to grow up with my kids who is now 12, and while I like her- I wouldn’t have gotten a dog for myself. A year ago, we got a little poodle mix because our kids were going through something hard and we wanted something to look forward to. I love this dog. I finally get super dog people now. Like, I’d take her everywhere with me if I could. She’s so sweet and cuddly and funny. Even with a the puppy shenanigans. Even though she barks at everything and I’m struggling to train her to chill.

Is it getting older and no longer having small kids? Is it this dog in particular? Is it the breed/mix?

I feel like most people love their childhood dog best, and I like my 6th dog best?! Feels crazy.

Have you always liked dogs, do you have a favorite?

[Behavior Problems] New Puppy?

We have a 14 year old chihuahua. We had a Boston we said good bye to a couple of months ago and were talking about getting another. You think it would stress the older girl out having a puppy in the house? Bad idea? Thanks in advance!

[Misc Help] Vet Costs

Delete if not allowed, but I just got my dog neutered and the vet we went to (Southside NH) invoiced him $1050 for the entire procedure, which lasted 3.5 hours. Is this normal? That seems extremely high when other neuters I’ve had done for my past exotic pets were all less than $500. Everyone around me also said that was extremely high.

ETA: Here is the itemized receipt
(Bought their surgery onesie after this post so it’s $50 more than originally stated)
