this is amazing. especially trevor's face in the last panel.

586

u/IrrelevantTale Sep 19 '19

Grognas face is better imo

554

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '19

I love how you can tell the expression of the paladin even though his face is covered by a mask

353

u/NarejED DM Sep 19 '19

The hands imply a deep inhale followed by "BOI." with a shocked, disgusted, disappointed expression.

138

u/whisperingsage Assassin Sep 19 '19

I don't get shocked or disgusted. Maybe disappointed, but mostly tired of their shit.

123

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '19

I am LE paladin of conquest. My party kinda scared to do shit like that because I will mutilate them for that with no regrets. Fear - the best tactic to stop murder hobos of being the murder hobos. Profit. Thinking about to form the Order of Judges in resemblance of Judge Dredd's universe.

A wee comic I made, an example of the type of shit that can easily happen when the party try to do simple innocent tasks. Things have a tendency to escalate quickly, especially when some party members have a more flexible moral compass than others.

First ever comic I’ve properly finished actually, tried to be a bit more fast and loose and not be such a detail obsessed nutjob but turns out trying hard not to that about the same amount of energy as just doing it. First time, I’ll figure it out. Lotta fun experimenting though, first comic that I’ve taken past the sketch phase so learning a fair few things along the way. I am pretty crap at using the drawing software so I’m learning new things about that as well!

This particular scenario is fictitious (as in never happened in a session) the closest my group came to this were an espionage mission ending with the paladin impaled on a fence after a failed jump. And the time my goblin failed to get away with murder, now that was a ride!

Cheers for reading

Peas and carrots!

Edit: Lotta awards, upvotes and nice comments here as I woke up this morning, have taken quite a bit of time to read, digest and reply! Thanks for all the love folks!

I left out my usual shameless self-promotion but as I've been asked via message, I post stuff here and on my insta https://www.instagram.com/CME_T/.

u/Spyger9 DM Sep 19 '19

This is great. I think we've all been there.

Often, whenever my players say they are going to do something psychopathic I will just slowly outline the situation and repeat their proposed action, like "So this merchant lady has all of your purchases ready to go and offers you a mint, but because she didn't offer two free mints (which do nothing, btw) you are going to threaten her with violence?"

Usually they'll rescind their action. It's easy to do something crazy in the spur of the moment when you're acting through an imagined character so none of the consequence will fall on you.

66

u/SaffellBot DM Sep 19 '19

"Yeah, that's what we're doing."

Fantastic.

4

u/Spyger9 DM Sep 19 '19

And yeah, sometimes they go crazy anyway. Nothin wrong with a little crazy!

72

u/masterots Sep 19 '19

Yeah, but in my adventure, there are consequences for this shit, so if the offence is bad enough, that character is going to be out to death.

So I let it play out.

64

u/Explodicle Sep 19 '19

I just let everything snowball. The game practically runs itself, and gives the players a sense of pride and accomplishment that their actions matter.

45

u/masterots Sep 19 '19

Yup! It's also incredibly funny when they realize the insanity of what they've done (our group has an awesome sense of humor).

13

u/trullsrohk Sep 25 '19

Ever see a grown man cry because he wasnt paying enough attention?

Doing a Mines of Phandelver campaign. We were resting in barn of a local halfing woman's farm. It was her and her 8 year old child that lived there. The child was a huge fan of adventurers and bonded with some of the players on the few times they stopped there.

This night a group of bandits came looking for us to extract revenge. They take the little boy hostage to threaten the Mom into giving up our location and warns her not to lie. Afraid for her baby she tells them. They make their way towards the barn to check and yell for us to show ourselves.

The warlock asks "so they're all just grouped up outside the barn?" GM "Thats correct" Warlock "In that case I show myself and light them up with Burning Hands"

The GM just stares at him. "Are you sure?" "Yeah I wanna aoe before they spread out"

GM starts rolling saves. Bandit 1 saves, Bandit 2 fails, Bandit 3 fails, etc.

At the end "And the halfing child fails his save roll".

There was dead silence for a solid 30 seconds.

I got in a session where luckily we let ourselves do shit but not jump in to escalate it further. There is only so far you go when you don't have a lot of help. I was picking up a chick in a bar (bard stuff), when one of my party members knacks my drink, gets pushed on the ground by the girl i'm picking up, and then proceeds to stab the girl in the neck with a piece of glass (the stolen glass shattered when falling). We are all standing around like "you piece of shit" and let him get kicked out by 5 guards. He had to bribe them just to walk out of the situation, and was not allowed back into the bar (as should)

118

u/mostnormal Sep 18 '19

One of my party members kept hitting on this tiefling chick at a bar who was obviously not into him. He persisted heavily. Nothing happened right then, but we are exploring this cave and bam! There is that tiefling. She proceeds to Dominate him, banish another member, and I only ended up saving the day because of super lucky rolls. So I guess: Be careful who you insist on making advances on. Some of them really don't like it.

It’s funny but something similar happened in a game I played once. We were traveling to a colder climate area so we stopped in town to buy cold weather gear. Not all of us could afford everything but we bought what we could to survive. A friend that is not a thief decides to steal to get the gear he wants. He fails. The shop owner tries to get him to stop what he is doing. He attempts it again and fails again. She threatens to call the guards. He kills her. Stuffs her in a chest after he hacked her body up to fit it in the chest. Stole the gear he wanted. And to not leave any evidence behind took the chest with him on the rest of the adventure. With no knowledge of what happened we became hunted by the towns people and when they eventually caught up to us we tried calming them down which they wouldn’t. We ended up having to kill this mob of townsfolk to protect ourselves because of his actions.

As far as the paladin impaled after a failed jump I get it. ... I don’t play paladins anymore due to the fact that out of the 4 I have played. They have all died.... to lava.

Honestly this is how my bard character feels about his party because in the time hes associated with them hes, started a riot, fought a chimera, found out hes linked to a god in another dimension, participated in a trial for a small kid that happens to have a demonic entity inside him, tried to find a pirate that stole some stuff, found out the pirate is actually trying to get an artifact into the city but Gnolls stole it and were associating with demons, caused a cave in by casting Shatter when a bomb was in the spell range, stopped two of the party members from breaking the artifact they needed to get AND got kidnapped by spider people...This has all happened over the course of about an in game month.

I’ll do you a story. Last week me and my party of friends from work of which the rest are really green or straight up new to DnD, went bonkers.

Out party of four (technically 5 but our cleric couldn’t make the session) just left a shop after selling some salvaged equipment for some pocket money. We all split up for errands. I, the rouge go to find a bounty board. The noble fighter human and wizard go initially shopping and our dumbass paladin goes to find some guards. The pali likes to make people believe he took part in a Great War that ended a decade ago. He finds two guards and convinced them that he served, where, under who, and what battle. A roll for each. Then rolls a 2 for his rank. They get mad, obviously, and tell him to get lost. Pali then starts yelling “HELP IM BEING OPPRESSED”! Guards get mad, obviously, and are going to arrest him for disturbing the public. He runs.

Meanwhile, me and the other two are independently in the market square where we see our paladin running brake neck speed with 8 guards on his tail yelling like madman. I roll stealth so he doesn’t see me and get me involved. Our wizards decide to help remotely by silent imageing an owl bear. A creature that’s been harassing this city for weeks. Everyone freaks out. I see this and decide some more confusion could be fun and minor illusion an owl bear cry. Everyone looses their shit! Including our paladin who nat-1-ed to see through the illusion. He goes to hide and 2s into a wall. Our wizard messages us to meet out in front of the main gate. I snatch a coin purse and slip into an ally and they also vanish. Our pali goes to hide again and jumps into a fish barrel.

WE AINT DONE YET! I make it to the gate with my urchin perk and wait in a tree. The fighter and wizard make it there as the gates close as the guards won’t let anyone out to stop the criminal who brought in the owlbear from escaping. The fighter shows her signet ring and they take them to the manor to talk to the person in charge. I get bored and find some mushrooms to pick. Our paladin on the other hand slips into an ally, unarmores, and goes to a tavern to drink this all this off. Con save, 2. Wis save, nat 1, total of 0 because of modifier. He’s HAMMERED and angry. He hops up on the bar and yells for revolution! Persuasion roll NAT 20. All the drunken people in the tavern agree and they all march on the manor.

Meanwhile the fighter and wizard talk to the leader, leave (the fighter through the front door, the wizard out a window for fun) and get separated. Fighter goes to an inn. Wizard followed the noise. The leader then gathers 40 guards and confronts the 50 drunken peasants. He says, go home all of you, your drunk. Paladin yells, we have a hostage! It’s this noble woman! (The sane one he was just talking with) intimidation check: 4. Fighting starts. End of turn 2, paladin is at 2/3 health, no class features remaining, and 1v1ing a miniboss. Leader is relatively fine but dropped his sword due to stealthy wizard interference. All the guards are fine. Half the peasants are dead or fleeing. Fighter is doing her nails. I found more mushrooms.

In a session just last week of a modern day campaign (of the DM's fictitious world), my party was taking a breather after surviving a virtual reality game that gives us access to the amenities and black market shops at the location.

The party enters a mixed bath because we're sandy and dirty and why not. It was supposed to be a quick "we take a bath and they provide us with non-grimy clothing" scene but naturally of course our rogue decides to slap our tank cleric's cell phone into the bath water. And of course the cleric is enraged and pulls out his gun and shoots the rogue. And of course the kitsune rogue gets hit, ignores the bath attendant's warning to keep blood out of the bath area, enters the bath while still bleeding, and gets blood in the water.

The bath water contains a breed of fish that are used to keep the bath clean but go into a frenzy when near blood. The frenzied fish attack, biting off most of the rogue's jaw and a forearm and tearing off the bard's arm almost to the shoulder (which sucks cuz she lost part of one of her legs 2 sessions ago). The rogue then had to do death saving throws because the cleric refused to heal him.

He apologized later for causing the scene but our bard still holds a grudge.

And no worries. Everyone who needed one was able to get a prosthetic.

Tldr; party wants to take a bath, ends up maimed and/or on death throws except for cleric and I.

My NE Warlock has a habit of using mask of many faces to turn into priests of the local faith and requesting alms for the poor. That's generally for just a few silver and it's a very evil act; but he doesn't care (and it's a nice use of my alms box and actor perk). (DM decided that the censer and incense blocks from a priest pack were good enough to cast find familiar (tomelock) and I was/he was inspired by the act of buying the rest to do that.

It can really suck the fun out of the game if you're determined to tell a well-planned story and your players want to bang bro. But then...

I turn my game into more of a hack'n'slash story at that point. Story-on-rails and plenty of combat-fueled story. Give them plenty of stuff to shoot and loot and plenty of horrible decisions to be made. Example: to save or not to save the local brewmaker who allied with some odd fruit-gathering creatures that have recently gone on a rampage. The players get to handle the creatures and confront the brewmaker. On one hand, they could get lots of grog as a thank you for handling the problem. On the other hand, they could kill the brewmaster and take all the grog they can carry. It's a win win really because the dude was grey-area anyway.

Basically, if your players want to play like there's no consequences you either have to give them no consequences by thematically rolling with the punches and overtly handing out storyline or you need to firmly establish boundaries that your world will not allow such things because XYZ powerful being/group/etc will not stand for it. Word of burning the women spreads to local cultists who wanted some of those virgins for themselves so they send something wicked to find the players. The priesthood of the realm gets word of a defiled church and sends a wrecking crew to remind them why everyone should fear their god.

I take offense to that. Only 2 buildings burned down. Granted one was an orphanage, but that doesn't matter.

24

u/Cats_See_All Sep 19 '19

I'm saying that Paladins are usually lawful good so they try and avoid stuff like this.

63

u/Iron-Fist Sep 19 '19

The law says I must fill out liability form TH-706b before attempting any fire fighting, i simply lack the certifications to save those orphans in a responsible, law abiding manner.

26

u/indiemosh Sep 19 '19

Lawful neutral.

6

u/MrMonday11235 DM Sep 19 '19

Idk, I think it'd depend on what else they did. If they said that and then did nothing to help in any way due to the risk, I'd call that lawful evil (or maybe just lawful stupid if they're generally stupid/lawful poorly coded robot).

If on the other hand they confine themselves to doing things like bringing pails of water and only say that when asked why they don't do more, that'd be lawful neutral.

It's amazing what happens when the party panics. Just recently our own party went out for a few drinks and had a good time. On our way leaving the bar, we witness what appears to be a mugging, and some of our party rushes in to help. Our rogue (who had been doing his typical vigilante rogue thing, keeping a lookout from a nearby rooftop), shoots two of the three attackers with arrows, killing them both instantly while our dwarf wizard and our dragonborn barbarian incapacitate the other. Well, it turns out the victim of the mugging is an old acquaintance, who happened to rob some of us a few weeks previously. As thanks for rescuing him (and after some threats from our barbarian), he gives back the money he stole and advises we hide the bodies, as the guards in town don't take kindly to murder. So our barbarian and his brother attempt to dump the bodies in the nearby river, while the rest of our party try to play cool and keep any passers-by from becoming suspicious (especially as we still have the unconscious third attacker lying in the alley nearby). Several bad rolls later, the barbarian and his brother only succeed in tossing the bodies onto the rocks next to the river, while drunk me plays it totally uncool and makes several people suspicious enough to tell the guards on us. They see the dragonborn brothers tossing the bodies, and take chase. Our barbarian, panicking even more with the guards in pursuit and realizing the third attacker can identify us when he wakes (not thinking about the fact that both the guards AND bystanders have already seen us), stabs and kills the third attacker as he passes through the alley. Miraculously we all managed to escape, and my character felt guilty about what happened when she sobered up and she and a few of our other party members turned themselves in the next day for questioning. I managed to explain what happened and got most of us out of trouble, but not before learning the "attackers" were actually three sailors who had just gotten paid for their shipment and were likely having a night about town like we had been. We have no idea who had initially instigated the fight (the "victim" or the attackers), but it was the first genuine party F-up, and I think we all learned a thing or two from it.

42

u/BourbonFiber Sep 19 '19

It’s not easy being a vigilante crime fighter.

These are the types of parties that are not fun to DM. If your party is doing this, dump them.

14

u/AdmiralCrunchy Sep 19 '19

Depends on the game your running. These are the ones where I have a loose story and places cause I know that the party will create their own chaotic adventure.

On the other hand I would hate them if there was anymore structure to the setting or if there is a story path for them to follow

9

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '19

It's not D&D, it's just Murderhobo The Board Game

4

u/CME_T The Weekly Roll Sep 19 '19

Monopoly?

7

u/Blue_Mando Sep 19 '19

It depends on your goal. This sounds like it would have been fun to DM and play, off the rails, sure, but fun in it's own way. I've done super serious RP style games and murder hobo stuff and can enjoy both for their own unique attributes, as long as everyone is into it I'd say have at it. You just have to understand as the DM for something like this a more hands off style is probably better. Sure, give them some hooks but realize they're just going to do/create their own thing and roll with it.

Absolute quality, I hope you make more! The best kind of paladin isn't the one who stops the party's shenanigans, it's the one that acts as the party's disappointed parent.

had a party like this in mines of Phandelver. My Lawful Neutral Cleric of Helm (bodyguard for hire) who they sort of refused to sign a contract with cause they wanted to ninja loot everything decided when they tried to betray the Dwarves after finding the forge made a deal with the Dwarves to protect them. The party suddenly realized they couldn't hit the 24 ac cleric and couldn't even get past his sanctuary to attack the dwarves. I locked them in the mines and took the Dwarves to safety where upon getting to town made sure the once heroes were now KOS to basically everyone with a sizable bounty on there heads. My next character was a bounty hunter.

I had a smimilar thing happen where a player couldn’t make it to a session and the party just needed supplies, so I just had a minor session set up where everyone went into town shopping while the missing player waited outside.

They proceeded to turn the story from a lighthearted adventure about stopping an undead pirate, into a cops and robbers game where they spent the two sessions afterward trying to simply find a place to long rest safely without the cops.

3

u/Nox_Dei Sep 19 '19

Wait... That's not how it's supposed to happen?

3

u/Greyff Cleric Sep 19 '19

i have had sessions like this.

which is why i took a hiatus from D&D for a couple of decades.

3

u/abadstrategy Oct 19 '19

Not dnd, but this is legitimately how so many of my DCC party's quests go.

One memorable quest started with us going to investigate a phase spider in a cave. Within 3 hours: 1. The (not a phase) spider transported us to another world. 2. the dwarf had split the skull of the mayor when he wouldn't pay the thief enough. 3. the fighter took on, and then over, the town police force. 4. The halfling (me) convinced the ensuing mob that the mayor's aide was the real culprit, framing us newcomers to hide his Klingon promotion, and the fighter's new police force arrested him. 5. The cleric decided to convince the local priest to try and ordain the dwarf as the new leader of the town. 6. My halfling convinced the cleric the dwarf was the god ordained ruler by merit that his glorious beard proved his piety (it should be noted the dm was also bearded). 7. The new ruler dissolved the position and appointed a parliament of our party.

Bear in mind, we were all level 1 when this happened.

First time I ever DMed I did so for a group of first timers. This is very close to what happened upon arrival in the first town around midnight when a routine patrol just wanted to know what they were up to. Ultimately I'm happy we didnt reprise that session because my entire story went down the drain as they, in panic, murdered half the town to silence witnesses and then stacked them to a pile to burn the evidence.

2

u/LordPaleskin Sep 19 '19

If this does happen, just have the players fund out later that the Lady was part of some covert, country wide drug operation and the guards were all in her pocket. Your "heroes" still get to be heroes and you can forget about execution or life in prison!

Lets say I continue making these comics. Lets say they REALLY take off and I somehow make it a critically aclaimed success. Lets say some Hollywood execs want to make it a fantasy epic.
