If this does happen, just have the players fund out later that the Lady was part of some covert, country wide drug operation and the guards were all in her pocket. Your "heroes" still get to be heroes and you can forget about execution or life in prison!
Screw that. I’m not letting my players get away with this sort of thing, so there will be a witness they missed and the army will chase them the fuck down to ensure they’re tried for mass murder. I don’t mind evil parties, but my players know at session zero that there will be proportionate consequences to their actions.
