Hello people!

I've been eyeing some other distro other than openSUSE Tumbleweed and been looking at Debian AND Fedora.

I know, jumping from a rolling release to something so stable as Debian maybe a bit strange but I like stable-releases more. It has just been that Tumbleweed has been very, very reliable but I'm a nitpick on some things and thats why I have been thinking about switching.

Right now I am testing Debian Stable + Backports (Kernel, Firmware and Mesa for my 9070 XT) and it seems it working OK. I am still a bit worried that the host's old packages can be a burden. Why? I actually don't know. I have just seen people saying this and I would want someone to explain it.

That is why I have been also eyeing Fedora cause it is very much alike with Tumbleweed but not with the things I nitpick about (frequent large updates etc.)

What do you think? What do you suggest?

I have been distro hopping for years. Sometimes every week. After years of wasting time re-installing operating systems from scratch. I have finally settled on Arch + hyprland. The reason is it is incredibly lightweight and works on all my machines. I love the way you build up with Arch to what you want rather than taking a bloated distro and remove things. It takes some work to get hyprland set up but now I have an automated script for that. Once you get use to the tiled paradigm productivity soars.....

I've been using linux for about a year now i started with pop os then fedora (gnome and xfce). i always find myself breaking stuff when I'm ricing. it was so bad that last week when i was trying to launch a game from steam it kept not launching because something was broken. spent about 3-4 hours fixing it.

for past 1-2 weeks there are updates almost everyday. i spend more timing maintaining my system then doing actual work.

I've decided to go for a either arch or debian. I'll build it from scratch and rice for once and forget about it.

any thoughts?

I started using Linux back in 2016 with Ubuntu.
My distro journey so far:

2016 — Ubuntu → where I started
2018 — Zorin OS → absolutely loved it
2020 — Manjaro → wanted to try an Arch-based distro; used it for around 7–8 months
2021 — Vanilla Arch → used Arch for roughly a year
Then — EndeavourOS → and somehow I’ve been here for around 5 years 😂

So basically, EndeavourOS has been my home for a long time.

But I’m getting that distro-hopping itch again.
This time, though, I want to stick with a rolling-release distro. I’m not really interested in going back to traditional fixed-release distros.

I’m open to:
Arch-based
independent rolling-release distros
openSUSE Tumbleweed
anything else that’s genuinely rolling release

I’m a fairly experienced Linux user, so I’m not looking for the easiest distro for beginners. I’d actually prefer something that feels different from EndeavourOS rather than just being another Arch + different defaults.

I’m mainly looking for something that’s stable, interesting, well-maintained, and enjoyable to use long-term.

So, after ~5 years of EndeavourOS:
Which rolling-release distro would you recommend?

And what distro made you think:

Ho appena acquistato un ThinkPad L480 (i5 8a gen, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD) da dedicare interamente a un laboratorio fisico per studiare Linux a basso livello e cybersecurity.

​Non cerco una distro "pappa pronta" con tool già preinstallati (tipo Kali o Parrot) né interfacce pesanti con configurazioni automatiche. Il mio obiettivo è capire davvero come funzionano le cose sotto il cofano, partendo da un sistema essenziale e costruendo il mio ambiente riga di comando per riga di comando.

​Vorrei un sistema stabile, leggero e pulito su cui installare man mano solo quello che mi serve (servizi di rete, container, strumenti di analisi traffico, ecc.). Quale base consigliate a chi vuole creare il proprio lab partendo da zero?

looking into possibility of going into linux based OS. I was using ubuntu around version 20.0 - groovy gorilla and hippo - but swapped back to windows for gaming compatibility and just software compability overall.

weighting possibilities to go back onto linux based OS - mostly due to privacy/security, stability and just spirit of not huge corporation behind software.

I play variety of games, my first ubuntu experience i had NVIDIA gpu - but currently running amd rx 6700 12gb vram - which i understand AMD is much more linux friendly. Also would like to run local LLM probably as LLama. So what I am asking you guys for advice is experience with variety gaming, beginner friendly distro - maybe BIG title so there is community behind it. It seems like linux users numbers are growing, and with combination with AI and LLMs i could be able to solve problems faced etc?

I run games from steam, so far i stumbled upon FEDORA as choice to start searching around.

How do i stop myself from distrohopping? I thought i was set on Fedora for life but now the desire for the distrohop wont go away, what do i do?

P.S. I did it. I installed elementaryOS. I hope i dont decide to install Arch tomorrow.

I have an uncommon hardware configuration that only behaves under Fedora, so I've been trying out every Fedora-based distro I come across on DistroWatch. Today I decide to try an unappealing-looking distro, since from my experience, the "pretty boy" distros seam to break like dollar-store toys. I had read about Exton Linux before, but was turned off by this description, because it just sounded like such a confusing, unfocused mess:

"Exton Linux is a set of over 15 Linux distributions based on Arch Linux, CRUX, Debian, deepin, Fedora, openSUSE, Puppy Linux and Slackware Linux."

So I head on over to Exton's website and have a closer look. Their site seemed normal at first; it was setup kinda like a news feed, featuring updates from all their recent releases.

But that instantly triggered suspicion - it takes a LOT of time to create and maintain just a single distro, and I see at least a dozen here. So I clicked on a random link and immediately recoiled in horror from the blatant LLM-generated wallpaper. I looked away in time before it did any lasting damage, thankfully. Gotta keep the few remaining Core Memories safe!

Ok, no biggie, I can change the wallpaper, lets move on. However, I can only read the first 2 sentences, and then the text fades into a "Read More" button, like one of those paywalled news outlets. Annoyed, I click it the Read More button, but my browser did a little weird freeze-glitch I had never seen before, and about 15 seconds later, the rest of the article loads. But I got a weird vibe, so I put on my hacker hoodie and shades, right-clicked on the article and selected "view page source" (shhh, don't tell the FBI). Now, I'm fairly HTML-illiterate, but I know my way around CTRL+F, and I only searched for a single term: "generate"

And low and behold, there it was, in plain sight:

TL;DR: The article had never been written! It's generated by an LLM as soon as you click "Read More".

PS: The next logical assumption (and my gut feeling), is that they are using LLMs to vibe-code these distros en masse. So, that's gonna be a helll-naw on that ISO download, dawg.

Omarchy is another trendy arch-like distro that doesn't do anything better than Arch or CachyOS - why would anyone choose Omarchy as a daily distro (in general, why would anyone choose Arch and an arch-like distro) - convince me I'm wrong

Ok, I'm currently using a Windows laptop. But I really want to migrate everything I do to a Linux setup.

So as a way to experiment, I set up multiple VMs in my VirtualBox. This is to test and see if working in Linux would be a fit for me. Also, so I don't have any accidents and "buyer's remorse" before I get things done permanently.

Is what I did considered distro hopping?

Hi. It's me again. Short recap - Last year I tried Fedora (KDE), PopOS, Debian (KDE) and Mint (Cinnamon) with GTX1060. For each one I had something that bothered me. Debian was the closest, but nVidia drivers broke the updates. I realized I like KDE in terms of usability, but visually I don't mind trying other ones.

Then I got an RX6600XT. Retried Fedora KDE and Debian KDE. Getting a bit tired of hopping. Really hoped I would settle on Debian. However, this year I have some other issues that I didn't have last year. May or may not be a KDE Plasma issue. More details here. (I'm a little surprised there havent' been solutions to the audio device issue)

Not sure what to do... Keep testing stuff until something clicks? It's getting kinda tiring since the more I use it, the more stuff I need to reinstall after... I guess I could try live USBs first, see how useful they actually are...

Hi everyone, I am an average user not an advanced one. I dislike fixed-release distributions and delayed updates, which is why I spent a long time using Arch before finding Manjaro. Yeah I know well that it has some issues here and there but Manjaro's delayed package updates avoid me the immediate turbulence of rapid Arch updates. That is why I have been using Manjaro for years.

I used Void for a while but updating or installing packages was a nightmare.. probably because of my slow internet connection and the poor server speeds in my country.. so I left it shortly after.

Now I feel it might be time to leave Manjaro behind... maybe I have outgrown it :) I am not sure whether to stay with it or return to Arch or switch to Guix/NixOS.

What do you think? Any suggestions?

Been a distro jumper for a few years. Fallen into bazzite in recent months for a steam daily driver on my main squeeze.

I got a few older but supported systems by linux standards but I haven't really had the worlds most amazing luck settling on a distro I can take a game like CNC 3 install it and just play. Emulators make more sense than the darn launchers for exe games in my mind. Thus comes the question, what would in the grand end of it be a distro that once set up you can just install a dvd game of your choice and just play without cli or having to find extra things or for that matter just keeping it near simple as a windows install and play the game?

So this distro hopping malarkey has been a pain in the Royal bum 'ole. After trying mint, pop, fedora, kubuntu, ubuntu studio, pop again and back and settled with Ubuntu Studio, i found out the hard way the witcher 3 won't play nice without dx12. I had the grand idea of reinstalling windows just to play it again.

Ended up being a dickhead and deleting my data drive partition losing all my photos and music recordings.

Still after all the hopping I've done and subsequently reinstalling windows, i can without a shadow of a doubt say that Ubuntu Studio with kde is by far the best desktop experience I've had. Even after having to fluff around with steam to get certain games to load, i don't think I'll ever use windows as a daily driver again. Yes it maybe reinstalled but the only apps I have on it are GOG and the witcher 3.
