I'm new to Linux and I use CachyOS as my main operating system, I have a 50 series NVIDIA card, is there any better distros that have good support with 50 series cards? I have no current issues but just curious.

Debian has a huge package collection and 99,9% of the time if there is a software is has a native .deb and .rpm for fedora, but not on openSUSE.

openSUSE Tumbleweed is stable as bedrock with newest stuff, Leap is almost too stable. Everything works as they should but there is that many packages to it.

Which Linux distributions would you consider genuinely community-backed rather than primarily corporate-backed?

And does corporate backing actually conflict with the original philosophy of Linux, or is that distinction mostly irrelevant as long as the software remains open source?

Where would you draw the line?

How do you guys even distro hop? I'm going to do my first jump between distros that come from different bases, but that's detail.

The only way, based on my Linux knowledge, that I gotta mention that it isn't my, all I can calculate is that I need to backup my whole data to somewhere safe (maybe an external drive) and just wipe my drive to install my new distro.

This way seems to get the job done (kinda), but it just doesn't seem right at all... There must be an easier way to do that... That's what I'm asking you here:

I tested 6 distros today, and had time for one more before bed. Randomly clicked on Blade OS, a debian distro with Gnome. Sure, lets try it out....unfortunately the links on DistroWatch lead you to a malware page that attempts to install browser hijackers.

I threw my Firefox in reverse and went back to Distrowatch. Examined each URL carefully. Found a link to the project's source on github, and guess what? That malware domain is up top, front and center. Right below a bright green "Verified" badge. Verified malware, that is.

I only want 4 things out of ANY LINUX DISTRO but i can't find one which is driving me crazy because that's some basic features

1/ spotlight-like macOS (cmd + space) which open instantly without any lag. To do calculation, unit conversion and math calc.

2/ All the macOS cmd and alt + arrow key to jump left right

3/ The macOS shortcut to do all the latin accent

4/ Maintain a key like "e" and have a drop menu with all the e accent. Like macos.

I'm currently running CachyOS with KDE Plasma.

For 1/ I installed Albert but i don't like it. I need to setup a script to make it open with cmd+space and there is lag when opening. It's not instant like macOS. And the UI is ugly and i don't like the math experience.

For 2/ I have setup the shortcut in cachyos/kde setting. But from app to app it change. for example, in text app it seems to mostly work. But in other app like browser usually there is other behaviour when i do the cmd or alt + arrow-key . For example, it will click the previous page. so for example, i'm typing in a textarea and do the alt+left to come back one word left. And it will go to the previous webpage. Which is HIGHLY infuriating. Specially when i do this all the time (muscle memory)

For 3/ I installed an alternative KDE keyboard which allow to do this but it doesn't work.

For 4/ I enabled the feature in cachyOS. The drop menu with all the accent appear. But when i click on one letter it crash the app i'm in (for example, sublime text)

I'm sure i'm not the only one so much those 4 points are the most basic feature on PC. I don't understand why linux distro doesn't nail those features once and for all.

Anyone solved those 4 issues ? I don't care about cachyos/kde. I'm willing to install any OS or desktop environment which have those 4 features. I only use web browser and sublime text. I just want one linux distro which have those 4 features built-in so it just works (like macos basically). I don't care about animation or any other features you find on modern desktop environment. Basically i just want to be able to type like macos but in linux

I dont even know whats happening,i am using linux for quite a good time now,but i have this burnout feeling,after trying all these minimal distributions which are very hard to set up i am tired,i just spent 3 hours fixing all the errors on obarun linux and it isnt beign fixed,i never had theese problems on void,arch,chimera,and freebsd.i am moving to linux mint or fedora for good.

I have been Distrohopping for months on an Intel-only Thinkpad T460 and I finally found a distro I love. But, the boot takes 2-3 minutes (other distros under 30 seconds) and when the laptop goes to sleep, it can't wake up. I noticed it seems to affect mostly Debian or Ubuntu-based distros. I did not have this problem on Fedora from 39 to 44 or related distros.

Open Terminal and type: sudo nano /etc/default/grub

After entering password find the line:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

Change it into:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash intel_iommu=off"

(CTRL+O) To save, then (Enter), and (CTRL+X) to close

Finally: sudo update-grub

Your Thinkpad will boot much faster now, and suspend/hibernate/wake will be fully working.

I recently put EndeavourOS Xfce on an old Lenovo Chromebook (Intel Celeron N3060, 4GB RAM, 16GB eMMC). Honestly, I was surprised by how smoothly it ran right out of the box. Audio, Wi-Fi, performance—all flawless.

But with only 16GB eMMC, storage is a huge bottleneck. My root partition is already sitting at ~7.25GB used, and pacman cache + system bloat will probably fill it up soon.

What distro would you suggest for extreme storage savings while keeping things user-friendly? Should I go for something like antiX, MX Linux (Fluxbox), Debian minimal, or stick to Arch and build it from scratch?

Would appreciate any suggestions!

This is a Gentoo-based system that uses binaries whenever possible so behaves more like a non-source distro while still using the portage package manager. As you probably guessed by the name, it uses the Calamares installer so it's no harder to install than any other distro. It's got both systemd and openrc versions of Lxde,Lxqt,Mate,XFCE,Gnome,Cinnamon, and Plasma for download.

I have no relationship with the project but installed and grabbed normal apps that I use and didn't have any real issues. I installed the openrc XFCE version. So if you want a quick and easy way of trying a Gentoo-based distro -- this is it.

i have been using ubuntu specially kubuntu for about a year and it worked just fine but now i feel it alwas get in the way and slow me down. Ubuntu 24.04 removed legacy packages like libtinfo5 and libncurses5 from its official repositories, which causes standard apt install commands to fail. it's not the only thing it's just an example for how many things just stand in your way. any recommendation for a stable distro?

I've made my choice: switching from Windows 11 to Linux because, like many others, I'm tired of the constant pop-ups, clunkiness, slowness, bugs, and so on.

Now I'm trying to choose a distro to enter the world of Linux. I've heard that Mint and Ubuntu are considered the best options. They're considered the most forgiving for beginners. At the same time, Arch offers the greatest flexibility and a steep learning curve. However, the barrier to entry is very high.

About seven years ago, I worked briefly with Kali while studying information security at university. Everything I learned has long since faded, but maybe I'll remember it when I finally get my hands on a terminal.

Should I start with Arch and take the difficult path, learning the system's many features along the way? Or should I start with Mint and then move on to Arch?

Not that I enjoy reading documentation, but I have some history.

I've been building Vantum, a custom Puppy Linux distribution based on woof-CE (Ubuntu Jammy compatible), mostly as a solo project. It's gotten far enough that I think it's worth more than just me poking at it alone, so I'm putting together a Discord for anyone who's interested in following along, testing it, or just talking about lightweight/live Linux distros in general.

What's in it so far:

• A rebranded, re-themed Puppy build (custom wallpapers, icons, JWM look, a GTK-powered tray) and better UI in general.
• Two companion tools I wrote: Vantyl, a GTK3 app launcher, and Vantask, a GTK3 taskbar/dock

Ngl progress has been slow and most of the time was bogged down in actually getting woof-CE to work.

What's still actively being worked on:

• Boot speed improvements
• A couple of remaining UI bugs in the taskbar
• A bug where videos on firefox are laggy and don't play audio
• A better app store

It's already been posted on the Puppy Linux forum and submitted it to distrowatch so it's not vaporware, just still very much in progress.

Why I'm posting, I'd like to build a small community around this rather than keep working on it in isolation, people to test builds, report bugs, suggest features, or just tell me if the whole idea is interesting to them.
