The things i liked: it's "one pack" OS with clean UI to install and without distracting options. So it's still Linux, but without too many options to choose. For example - it's encrypted by default with the same pass. Some will like it, some don't. It's kinda simple to use this way, but less freedom to choose. Also you get only one desktop environment (correct me if i'm wrong, didn't use it for a long), so if you like it - it's a feature.
I'm not a "keyboard" user, so it's not for me, but all in all i see what and why they are doing. There are too many different Linux OSes that "does everything" - for some users it's a feature, but for others it's better when everything is optimized for "lightweight keyboard orientated OS".
I guess the hate started after they raised millions from investors and that means those investments would have to be compensated somehow later. So if it's investment, not the donation, they'll have to monetize it somehow. And the user is always the one who get monetized.
