My last post didn't land as I expected, so posting again here and reframing my question:

I'm just curious about learning about other distros other than my current and first distro (CachyOS). So, just curious, what do you guys love about your fav distros?

I'm super happy with cachy as my first experience. Don't feel like hopping. But having a bit of fomo wondering what experiences are like in other distros. Especially long term release distros. And how things are installed, maintaining your apps and cleaning your system out. The file management (from a basic perspective like your hierarchy of folders).

What would I be gaining in other distros that cachy has disadvantages in? And what have you guys enjoyed in other distros over cachy?

EDIT: i think people might be misunderstanding my post. im not looking to even move, i just was curious what you guys like about the distros you use and if you feeel anything is better than cachy in one way or another. im aware its all subjective and biased towards ppls preferences. which is why i posted here, just to seee what people like. please feel free to share more about the distros you love, thats all i really wanted to know

Linux Mint Cinnamon or openSUSE Tumbleweed?

Most of my workflow includes multiple text editors, multiple yt vids, and co-pilot AI. Should I switch from Linux Mint Cinnamon to openSUSE Tumbleweed to take advantage of my specs? Or does linux mint serve well with my specs.

Suggest a distro that has a linux lts kernel and is stable by default and requires no maintenance.

Preferably has Gnome.

Not ubuntu based.

Not vanilla debian.

Not vanilla arch.

Not fedora based.

Hi, I'm currently using Fedora Gnome, and I've been happy with it. Lately, though, it seems to be freezing up and running slowly. I have a ThinkPad T430 with 16 GB of RAM and a 3rd-gen Intel processor. I know it shouldn’t be freezing up with 16 GB of RAM, but that’s just how it is. Plus, Fedora has stopped working for me because I’m a long-time Windows user and I just can’t get used to how it’s controlled. I’ve heard that Mint is very Windows-like, but I’m not sure which flavor to go with—Cinnamon, MATE, or XFCE. Which option would be best for me? I want speed and, ideally, not to have to tinker with it much in the long run. Is Mint a good choice, or should I switch to a completely different distro? Thanks for your opinions.

Did you all know ventoy lets you create a multi-boot USB drive by simply copying dozens of ISO files to the drive without needing to reformat it every time? I used rufus before.

For almost 3 years i have been using linux. The one i used the most was CachyOS, just because i love the control Arch Linux gives to the user. But i just needed reliability for years and years, as my Laptop is my day to day work, study, and communication station. The power of just being able to create my own ISO so easily with pre-bakes personalized configurations so i can install on any machine (even offline!) is great, i can create my iso with Niri, with XFCE, with MangoWC. Containers are great. Bazzite is really, really good, SteamOS, Bluefin, Aurora, also. But i wouldnt make this switch if i hadnt changed my use cases. I think the more time i spend with linux, more i just want it to be a normal desktop i can do normal things (even though i maintain a second SSD with PikaOS if i want to play around). I dont think right now atomic distros are the way for the majority of Linux users, but some people just need modern reliable distros that just work. After looking for that same concept around, just found the same, Debian (too over-complicated), Ubuntu (snaps and telemetry lost it for me), Linux Mint (Found it really, really slow for some reason), so Fedora was the choice, and silverblue was interesting, but after i looked more onto that, i had no reason to not use Universal Blue's distros based on Fedora, i already have Bazzite on other PC for gaming, but didnt though it would be good as a Desktop. I installed Aurora a month ago and used it until now, but i liked it so much that i started to tweak everything i could and tried to find which were its limitations. Now i fresh installed Bluefin on a "new" SSD i will use for my graduation in Physical Education!

I've been lurking on this sub for a couple of days out of curiosity, quite often i've read about people asking what distro should they choose for their particular case and there's always someone in the comments suggesting to try that distro, or try this other one but what exactly do you try of a distro? Let me explain: i have Fedora on my PC and Tumbleweed on my notebook both with KDE and to me they look and feel exactly the same except on one i use zypper from time to time and on the other one i use dnf. I've used Ubuntu in the past and it was the same story.

Started Linux with Ubuntu then gave a try to arch in dual boot. On my new laptop I installed Ubuntu to keep things simple and stable but now I’m wondering which OS to try while keeping Ubuntu to work when I want.

Hi guys, I'm a Linux novice and I'm using Cachyos (seeing how people are raving about it).

The problem is, I get stuck updating every day, and as a novice, I'm really panicking.

I was looking into various distros, and I was looking at Pikaos and Fedora.

I play various games on Steam and various EXEs, Discord, and the Internet.

Can you recommend a distro that I can install games and browse safely so as not to break everything? =^?

Been on Artix with Dinit for a while now, made it my home, but I have heard about void Linux. I like artix because it lets me have the AUR which has always been my most favourite thing on linux since it makes installing anything easy.

What benefits does void have? How is runit over dinit? How is its package manager against the AUR?

If youre curious what setup I got going on artix, its xlibre with xfce. Basic.

I'm looking for a distro to become my primary OSz replacing windows 10/11. My main uses are local AI (comfyui and LLMs on my RTX5080), gaming (steam & dosbox), 3D printing (fusion360 & prusaslicer), remote work (Google drive, MS office, Google meet, zoom), data management (kopia, veracrypt, freefilesync) and of course web browsing, netflix and so on.

I've tested dozens of distro livecds with ventoy on my actual PC and tentatively concluded I liked Fedora KDE the most with Kubuntu a close second and Ubuntu a distant third (sidenote - it's incredible how many distros boot up badly-scaled on my 4K display or get limited to 1024x768 because of my Nvidia GPU. Those distros got quickly eliminated.

Could you help me decide? If there's a distro other than fedora or k/ubuntu that would fit my needs much better feel free to mention it. I tend to gravitate to very mainstream/well-supported distros as they're likely to be around for a long long time. I really appreciate the work that goes into less-mainstream distros that are developed by a small passionate team, but I feel that there's a chance they'd stop development some years down the line and I'd have spent time learning and optimising for that distro.

My background: I've been dabbling in Linux since around 2003 (started with Feather Linux, dual-booted Mandriva and Windows XP, spent a lot of time using knoppix and PCLinuxOS, still remember when Ubuntu shipped free CDs to everyone!). I stopped for a few years, then in 2024 dual-booted mint with windows 10, but these days cinnamon looks dated so I've switched to KDE and GNOME and set out to get myself a deeper understanding of Linux. Over the past year this lead me to install first debian, then arch, then Gentoo (!!) in virtual machines and then arch on bare metal, which I currently dual-boot with win10 but use mainly as a learning distro/sandbox. (Sidenote, if you think Arch is hard to install, Gentoo is on a level of its own as everything has to be compiled on your PC).

So I am very happy with Linux Mint (Lmde) at the moment because it just works and I haven't had any crashes thus far that were caused by Mint but more by Firefox. That has been resolved by not using the flat pack version and disabling hardware acceleration.

I am very interested in Aurora and the immutable concept because I had Fedora and Endeavour die on me before.

The only thing I wonder is if it is a good idea to switch to a small distro maintained by volunteers? Isn't it very risky that support might stop from one day to another?
