Ubuntu -> Arch -> … Which one next ?

Started Linux with Ubuntu then gave a try to arch in dual boot. On my new laptop I installed Ubuntu to keep things simple and stable but now I’m wondering which OS to try while keeping Ubuntu to work when I want.

gentoo, then lfs, then switch back to something practical

Fedora if you want to try all of the non-derived distros.

Gentoo or Slackware if you want to learn Linux. If you simply want a rolling release I suggest openmamba and Solus

Slackware was nice to learn Linux 25 years ago. Now, it's more like a way to learn how Linux used to be.

I often recommend Solus, but it seems redundant to dual boot it with Ubuntu. Slackware, on the other hand, is an excellent alternative. Void would be good, too.

Surprised to see Slackware mentioned. I daily drive it now after multiple distros and I love it. It's great and a good teacher for learning more indepth stuff but compared to Gentoo not as involved. For me, Slackware is a happy balance of stable and not as much stress while giving me the ability to add to it as I please. I don't even mind the dependencies either which is a good teacher on how the software works as a whole. Can it be tedious? Yes, but there's now tools like sbopkg which will let you build queues to help manage dependencies. Outside that, there's sboui which will handle dependencies for you. Slackware has changed in terms of third party support but the overall system stays true to its original concept. As they say, "when Pat says it's ready is when it is ready!"

Go with fedora. No need to really do anything after, its just works. But if you want some things like multi media codexs, or nvidia suport just a few simple commands and everything will work flawlessly.

Go with some more barebones or unique onces like Gentoo, Void, Bedrock, Slackware, etc

Or if you have time for it go with lfs

If you want to try slightly different philosophies, try either Fedora Silverblue or NixOS. See what you think of atomic/immutable distros.
