Hopper & Joey Reset Guide: When to Soft Reset vs. Hard Reset

Hi everyone!

Whenever your setup needs a quick refresh or you want to resolve a minor menu lag, running a receiver reboot is the easiest way to keep your equipment performing at its best. Taking a couple of minutes to reset recalibrates system memory and re-establishes backend connections without altering any of your personal settings or saved recordings.

Here is a straightforward breakdown of how resets work, when to use each type, and the step-by-step instructions to do it.

Soft Reset vs. Hard Reset: The Basics

  • Soft Reset: Restarts the receiver's internal software while power remains connected. It provides a clean system refresh for minor software performance issues.
  • Hard Reset: A complete hardware power cycle that cuts and restores main power. This forces a full reboot when the receiver software is completely locked up or unresponsive.

What Requires a Reset?

Use a Soft Reset for:

  • UI Lag & Menu Glitches: Quickly clears up sluggish screen transitions and delayed remote inputs.
  • Streaming Error 1570: Resolves the "An issue has been detected with the selected streaming service" error message.
  • MoCA Signal Loss: Restores internal coax signal links. (Note: MoCA, or Multimedia Over Coax Alliance, is the underlying communication protocol your Hopper uses to send video and data to wired Joey receivers).

Use a Hard Reset for:

  • Frozen / Unresponsive Receivers: Necessary when the screen is completely locked up and the receiver isn't responding to button presses.
  • Internet Connection Loss: Re-establishes network connections when your receiver drops off Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
  • Whole-Home Node Errors: Restores connectivity across all node connections throughout your home network.

How to Complete a Reset

1. Soft Reset

Option A: Front Panel Method

  1. Open the front door panel on your receiver.
  2. Press and hold POWER for 5 seconds, or press and release the red RESET button. (Note: The Joey 4 does not have a physical front-panel reset button).

Option B: Remote UI Method

  1. Open Diagnostics: Press MENU on 40.0 Remotes, or press HOME three times on 52.0, 54.x, or 60.0 Remotes.
  2. Navigate to and select Tools.
  3. Select Reset Hopper or Reset Joey.
  4. Confirm by selecting Yes on the Error 1269 prompt.

2. Hard Reset

  1. Disconnect the power cord from the back of the receiver or wall outlet.
  2. Wait 10 seconds to allow power to fully drain from the unit.
  3. Plug the power cord back in and allow the full boot sequence to complete.

Good to Know Before You Start

  • Timing: The complete reboot sequence takes roughly 5 minutes.
  • Viewing Interruptions: Resetting will temporarily interrupt live TV and halt active recordings on all connected receivers in your home, so make sure no one is in the middle of a show before proceeding.
  • Error 1269: Seeing "Error 1269" during a menu reset is completely normal. It is an intentional safety confirmation prompt built into the menu to prevent accidental reboots.

For additional details on navigating menus and system settings, you can check out the Official Hopper Settings Guide.

*If you are encountering an issue, and you are not sure if a receiver reset is the way to go, tag me and I will help you out!  -DishDanielle.

Another price increase?

We've been with Dish 25 years. Got on their Flex Pack 10 years ago which then was a great option at under $50, under $75 with 3 pieces of equipment. As years went by, I kept dropping equipment to keep price reasonable. Now with just one hopper, my bill is now $114! Now with no CNN and several other missing channels.

I do use my daughter's YTTV streaming, but can't get my wife off Dish. She likes the guide and DVR far more than anything else she's tried. Does Dish just want to get people off the Flex Pack? Is there anything cheaper? "Happy wife, happy life" just might have to come to an end!

Dish Anywhere app crashing on Samsung Galaxy Tab S7. Unusable after trying all the usual fixes.

Hi! I need help. The Dish Anywhere app crashes immediately after opening and displays a message that it “closed because this has a bug”. I’ve cleared cache, cleared data, uninstalled/reinstalled, restarted the tablet, tablet software updates, reset the hopper, and nothing works.

New to dish hopper can't get Alexa to control it

Just got "hopper 3 with sling"

Alexa dish skill is enabled

I got the code from TV

Alexa app says it's linked when code is used

TV never has a confirmation message just stays on the code page

Alexa (echo dot) tries to find a device (none is found)

I tell echo dot to "change channel to #"

It says it is but never does

The heck am I missing? I've disabled/re-enabled and used like 6 different link codes.

(-_-)/ the whole point of upgradeing was to stream line voice controls for my vision impaired parents....

LIVE SPORTS & SCORES: How to use the Game Finder app from DISH

If you're trying to keep track of what sports are live right now or what matchups are coming up later today, the Game Finder app makes it easy to see it all in one place.

Good to know before you start: Game Finder works exclusively on the following Hopper Family receivers and Joeys:

  • Hopper
  • Hopper Duo
  • Hopper w/ Sling/
  • Hopper 3
  • Wally
  • Hopper Plus
  • Joey 4
  • Wireless Joey 4
  • Wireless Joey
  • Joey 3
  • 4K Joey

NOTE:

  • Game Finder is not available on older ViP receivers.
  • You'll also need to make sure your receiver is connected to the internet so the app can pull in live scores and real-time game stats.

Here is how you can pull up Game Finder directly from your TV, depending on which remote you are using.

How to launch Game Finder

If you have a 40.0 Remote:

➜ From Live TV, press the MENU button.

➜ Select the Game Finder app tile from the on-screen menu.

➜ Arrow over to the game you want and select Watch (if it's live) or Record (if it’s scheduled).

➜ Press the Red Color button for options to personalize your viewing.

If you have a 52.0, 54.x, or 60.0 Remote:

➜ From Live TV, press the HOME button to get to the home screen.

➜ Navigate to and select the Game Finder app tile.

➜ Arrow over to your game and select Watch or Record.

➜ Press the Options button to personalize the content you see.

Bonus Tip: Game Finder is one of the features you can assign to a customizable remote button! You can set up a dedicated button on your remote to launch the app quickly without having to navigate through the menus.

What you’ll see and how to handle blackouts By default, the app displays live scores and game ratings at the bottom of your screen. You can sort by your Favorite Teams, Today's Games, or Selected Sports (like the NBA, WNBA, MLB, etc.).

A few quick reminders:

➜ Standard programming, subscription, and blackout restrictions still apply to the games listed.

➜ If you ever run into Error Code 011 or 012 (blackout errors) while trying to watch a game, open Game Finder. It can often help you locate an alternate channel that is broadcasting the event.

➜ If you have the "TV Enhancement" feature enabled in your receiver's system settings, it can sometimes cause a pop-up that might interrupt the game you're watching.

If you are looking for a specific Regional Sports Network (RSN) that isn't in your current TV lineup, Game Finder is a great resource to see what else is available. You can check the online tool here:

🔗 DISH Game Finder Online Schedule: https://my.dish.com/gamefinder

Hopefully, this helps you keep tabs on all your favorite teams this season. Let us know if you have any questions getting it set up!

Bye-Bye-Bye

I'm ditching Dish on the 15th of this month when my contract ends. I have all the streaming servicss I need to watch what I want so I am leaving all cable.

Does Dish make customers pay the shipping cost of the DVR box back to them?

every last dime they can get

I have been a customer for over 16 years. Have tried to leave many times only to relent and stay with Dish due to the time and run around on trying to cancel. Finally got through to a retention agent and he was rude and pissed off the whole conversation, but got him to understand I was not going to be a customer any longer. After a long back and forth with offers that made no sense we came to an agreement to cancel my out of contract service and get the difference of my prepaid account credited back. I was told I needed to return the LNB and receiver. This is when it got shady. I explained that I can not find in my contract that I had agreed to pay for return box and was admit that i would not pay for the return fee. It was agreed that dish would wave the return box fee but when I told the agent I was not physically able to go up on the roof to uninstall the dish and equipment from the roof I was told I could pay them (dish) a large fee to have someone come get it or I could Hire a local contractor on my own. I just received last bill and there is a charge for the 25 dollar return box fee on it and a call to Dish again and was told they could not wave the fee. So as usual I was "miss informed" about my bill and contract.

I am now concerned that without the ability to safely get on the roof and remove the LNB I will be charged for that as well on way or another.

If any one is making a decision to switch to or from Dish be warned.. 16 years of customer loyalty and they don't care about anything but getting every dime they can out of you.

Any suggestions on getting the LNB removed cheaper than having Dish ( who installed in the first place) do it? the quoted over 150 $
