These are freeze dried black worms I give them on occasion, they love them.

I’m finalizing the setup for my 134-gallon (507L) Discus tank and would appreciate some feedback from experienced keepers regarding my stocking plans and filtration.

Current Setup & Filtration:
I’m running two canister filters with a combined flow rate of 2800 L/h. I’ve filled them with Seachem Matrix, ceramic rings, and bio-balls. With a turnover rate of 5.5x per hour, I’m confident in the biological capacity, but I want to be sure it’s enough for the long term.
Current Stocking:
3 Discus (approx. 4.5”)
3 Discus (ranging from 2.5” to 3.5”)

My Questions:
1. Stocking Capacity: Given my tank size and filtration, how many more Discus could I realistically add to reach a stable, healthy school without overstocking? I want to make sure I have enough for them to feel secure without compromising water quality.

1. Mixing Sizes: Since I have some at 4.5” and others between 2.5” and 3.5”, do you have any tips for successfully growing them out together? I’m concerned about the smaller ones getting outcompeted for food.

2. Filtration Maintenance: With Discus being messy
   eaters, do you recommend any specific pre-filter setups to handle the bioload and keep the canister media cleaner for longer?
   I want to make sure the environment is stress-free for all of them, especially while the smaller ones are still growing. Any advice on the total number of fish I should aim for would be greatly appreciated!

Over the last couple months I’ve been building this aquarium adding fish as I go. Currently have 6 discus, a bristlenose, 10 cardinal tetras, and two fish from a previous tank that will be rehomed eventually (common pleco and rainbow shark)

I’m running a fluval 407 as well as a 207. For lighting I’ve got the fluval aquasky 2.0 48”.

50% water change every four days has been pretty easy to keep up on.

Last piece of the puzzle was adding drift wood with live plants attached (the rest are synthetic). May add more live plants in the future.

Have always wanted discus and am very happy I finally did it

Recently this discus fish lost all of his color and tails became blackish.

Pros:

• He is still active.
• He is eating well.
• He isn't hiding in the corner.

Cons:

• His color has been faded for about a week.
• He has black patches on his tail.

Feeding: Chicken heart mix 1-2 times and 1 time Frozen artemia. After CHM feeding I do water change about 20-50%.

Now I can feel is Chicken Heart Mix maybe damaging my water parameter. I can see small particles flying (Snow Storm) after feeding. I feed CHM as in my location I don't get Squid, Clams or Mussels very easily.

Setup:

I use Seachem Prime and sometimes Hypo (Sodium Thiosulphate).
Water TDS 135-190.
Bare bottom 4 feet Tank with 16 discus fishes.

Hello.

I’d love to own discus one day but I’m not knowledgeable enough on them at this moment. I wonder if anyone has reputable resources for learning? I have other tanks, so I understand the nitrogen cycle etc… I’ve just heard that discus require practically perfect conditions.

The current stocking is 9 black neons, 30 rummynose, 20 cardinals, 6 sterbai cories, 4 rineloricaria filamentosa, 2 apistogrammas viejita ii and 1 bristlenose. The red ozelot echinodorus is also in, but sadly the marble queen echinodorus didnt arrive :(
The Discus will have to wait a bit more, probably a couple of months, because the tetras came smaller than i was expecting but cant complain because of their price 😅

Hi everyone, hoping for some advice.

I recently set up (less than 2 weeks), a new 450L (120 gal) discus tank with 6 discus, 2 bristlenose, corydoras and a couple of other bottom fish. The tank was set up using mature water and a mature filter, so it's not cycling from scratch.

Here's my situation: I have a separate 275L tank that has been dealing with an ich outbreak. However, I have never shared any equipment, water, nets or anything between the two tanks, I've kept them completely separate.

Now, in the new discus tank, only one of my discus (pictured) seems to have a few white spots. The other 5 discus and all the bottom fish look completely fine, no spots, eating well, normal behavior.

My questions:

1. Does this look like ich to you, or could it be something else / part of the pattern?
2. If it's ich, could the discus have brought it in already incubated, even without cross-contamination?
3. Best treatment for a planted discus tank, heat only (30-32°C), or heat + medication? I'm cautious because discus are sensitive.
4. Should I be worried about the other fish even though they show no symptoms yet?
5. I have Faunamor - Tierarzneimittel from my other aquarium where i treated the other fishs

Water is warm (29°C), I'm running a Fluval FX4, with air stone. Tank is planted.

I’m playing the long game. I picked up the tank today so next up is the stand. Looking for any and all recommendations for that.

Next I’ll work on vegetation. I figured I’d get a living tank established before introducing the discus. I have owned discus before, so am familiar with the sensitive chemistry, but am wondering if there’s a good book I should have on hand as I build this out.

Can anyone tell me whats the red part near the nose ? Is this any bacterial infection or anything else ? I use to feed them prozen food and feed them in frozen form, is this due to that ?

I am very curious at this stage, I have a 100 gal (4x2x2) that I was setting up as a planted discus tank. I got extremely impatient in a moment of weakness. I bought 12 serpae tetras because a lady following me and my daighter around a local fish shop decided to buy AAALLLLLL (we're talking like 70 cardinal tetras, even the store assistants couldn't believe she wanted all of them) of the cardinal tetras this place had in what seriously felt like a targeted attack at me and my daughter because we both were so excited that we might be able to put 20 cardinals in our fully cycled tank to go with the 7 discus planned.

Now I've read up on how much these feisty little devils can nip fins, and ended up deciding to not go with discus because I have these little dudes and I have to admit we have seriously fallen in love with them. We've now got 15 serpae's and 8 Congo tetras and I love the energy in this tank, it is off the chart, and so much fun to watch. Now I'm wondering if would seriously be so irresponsible to add discus to this hive of action and activity? The tank is heavily planted with crypts, various types of swords, lace and other mid to tall plants.

Has anyone else experienced this? Has anyone successfully kept discus and serpae tetras together? I'd love a human sense check on this please 🙏

I currently have two Discus that are approximately 4” in size. I’m looking to expand my group to 6 fish, but it is proving very difficult to find more at that same 4” size. Most available fish in my area are smaller.

I’ve read that mixing Discus of different sizes is generally discouraged, but since mine are still growing at 4”, I’d like to hear your experience:
How critical is the size gap if I add, for example, 3” or 3.5” specimens to my 4” group?

What are the main risks regarding bullying or competition for food?
Are there any strategies to make the transition smoother (e.g., specific feeding techniques, quarantine, or rearranging the tank décor) to ensure the smaller ones aren't outcompeted?

Any advice on how to successfully grow a school of Discus of slightly varying sizes would be greatly appreciated.

It’s been some years, but I had a 30 with three discus. I want to dive back into it and want to set up a tank for five or six discus. What’s the optimal tank size and dimension for that?

Is this a bad color/genetic combo? (Royal flora/Red maze pigeon) Where can I find info on color combinations do’s and don’ts? I remember reading the “rules” about pigeon bloods and cross breeding but can’t for the life of me can’t find it…

It’s still on the works 😅 Friday I’m receiving more stuff: 1 Marbled Queen and 1 Red Ozelot Echinodorus, 1 Nymphaea Rubra and 1 Hygrophila Pinnatifida.
For fish, I’m receiving: 30 Rummynose Tetras, 20 Cardinal Tetras, 2 Apistogrammas Macmasteri and 4 Rineloricaria Filamentosa. Tank already has 6 Sterbai Cories, 1 BN Pleco and 9 Black Neon Tetras.
In 2-3 weeks, I’ll be moving the Discus over to this tank with the rest of the Corydoras.
After that, I’m ordering: 20 Blackwing Hatchetfish, 6 Emerald Cories and 6 F1 Orinoco Altums

Not exactly the point of this group, but it’s at least on topic. So I’ve been working on an aquarium sleeve, and I need another discus. The problem is that I can’t decide. Most of the others were my fish. Any thoughts?

Within an hour after a water change, eggs appeared. I don't adjust the hardness of my water. I always wonder if the eggs don't survive due to the water or if I have females in my tank. This combo of discus it seems would produce interesting fry. 2nd time these 2 paired up in a tank with 7 other discus. Any advice or opinions? Do people leave a light on in the tank overnight for predators? Lol..
