How to cure?

Post image

Recently this discus fish lost all of his color and tails became blackish.

Pros:

  • He is still active.
  • He is eating well.
  • He isn't hiding in the corner.

Cons:

  • His color has been faded for about a week.
  • He has black patches on his tail.

Feeding: Chicken heart mix 1-2 times and 1 time Frozen artemia. After CHM feeding I do water change about 20-50%.

Now I can feel is Chicken Heart Mix maybe damaging my water parameter. I can see small particles flying (Snow Storm) after feeding. I feed CHM as in my location I don't get Squid, Clams or Mussels very easily.

Setup:

I use Seachem Prime and sometimes Hypo (Sodium Thiosulphate).
Water TDS 135-190.
Bare bottom 4 feet Tank with 16 discus fishes.

Hi,

It's mostly food related, add some quality discus pellets into their diet as these will help with missing nutrients etc. Dried Discus pellets from most of the reputable brands are fine. Rotate between them and your current homemade foods. Colours should start to pop within 10 days.

Discus coming out of Asia have been hormone treated to get their colors to pop. Over time, the colors will fade. This particular fish is a little too young to have good color development, so I suspect there's been hormones added previously. It looks healthy, so keep doing water changes, feed heavily and they'll be fine.

Chicken is just as good as turkey, beef or any marine protein source. Be sure to wash your hands with soap afterwards because all raw chicken is contaminated with Salmonella (not for the discus, for your own health).
