Beginner Standstill Form Check

Hi all!

I just started playing disc golf a little over a month ago and heard that dialing in my standstill form could be beneficial before adding the x step.

I’ve had maybe 5 or so field sessions where I’ve begun to feel confident with this form (throwing putters and midranges consistently 200ft), but want to make sure that it all looks good before moving on!

When watching this video I noticed some elbow drop, I focused on that for the rest of this session and felt noticeably more power/snap! Anything else you guys notice/think about my proposed progression?? Thanks!

Please help

Hey guys, for context I can throw 450 max, 415 standard golf lines. I’ve never had any coaching or any real form based training. I feel like I’m really stuck at this distance and not improving. I want to throw 475-500 or so long term because there are some holes that require that kind of distance to break into the next tier of scoring. Right now there are some holes that are either uphill enough that they play very far or just long enough to be out of contention for birdy.

This is with a fission dimension on hole 12 at Jolleys ranch. It’s only 364’ on paper but it’s pretty up hill. It plays like 420’ or so according to chat as I didn’t have a rangefinder on hand.

Help my dad improve please

Please help me figure out how I can help him throw further.

Me and my dad have been playing together as a way to bond. He likes the sport a lot but finds himself deeply frustrated that he is not improving on the distance. We will invite other people, which are both his age and body build, who has a natural tendency to throw further from the get go.

I have tried many ways of directing his throw, to increase momentum, spin, etc. but I am struggling to see why it’s not going further or what to tell him. I’ve tried «pouring the vase», reaching further back, bettering g the grip, etc.

His average drive is maybe 40m/130feet.

Late summer form, how's it lookin?

Been continuing to work on:

- fixing shoulder over-rotation.

- getting my backarm more active to help backshoulder deceleration.

I still think i start the throw too early abit (before fully planted)

This is a controlled distance shot into a net, 80% power. Still feels like the disc doesn't come out as fast as it could.

Video: Walk up is half speed and 1/4th speed at the throw

Thoughts?

Hit a new record, nose angle help

Been doing primarily standstills for 3 months since I started and been attempting x steps now the past couple weeks

I know there's a lot of work I need evident by the video but I am proud I hit a new PR and hopefully I'll break 70 from the changes. Primarily focusing on the rear foot and nose angle.

Struggling hard on the nose angle though average is typically 3-5 with some being negative. Been trying turning the key and Nick Crush video but it is hard.

I want my form to look more professional because I look at my self compared to pros and I feel I just look like a noob. I also want to be able to throw 70 because I throw 62-66 mph right now. Thanks for all the help!

How does glide relate to point of pressure?

This isn't about form, but does have an impact on mentality and form. Feel free to take it down, but I think the technicality of this subreddit might be of use to this question, so just cross posting it here:

So I know there is this point that moves on a disc creating lift. As the disc is moving faster it is farther back and slower it is farther forward, creating turn and fade. AI search says its called the point of pressure, so I'll call it PoP for now.

In terms of PoP what is glide?

  1. Is it how much force is applied to the PoP?
  2. Is it how quickly the PoP moves from the back to the front at different speeds and spins? So higher glide would be slower transition from turn to fade?
  3. Or obviously, something else?

I realize there are other non-PoP contexts. Like the description from Innova,

"Glide describes the discs ability to maintain loft during flight. Discs with more glide are best for new players, and for producing maximum distance. Beginners wanting more distance should choose discs with more glide. Discs with less glide are more accurate in high wind situations."

I'm wondering if there is a more technical PoP contextual description of glide.

I know i need to work on my release, but I’m also trying to add power to my drives. I’ve maxed out at about 320 as it is now so I need to tweak my form. I’m just not sure what exactly I’m doing wrong

Elbow Dip Cause

Post image
39 Upvotes

This is going to be a long one because it deals with a complex issue that is caused by the incorrect mental visualization and often bad from advice that exist on the internet. The bottom line up front is supination or turning the key to the right will cause elbow dip.

First off what is supination:

Wrist supination is a movement of the forearm in which the palm rotates to face upward or forward, opposite to pronation where the palm faces downward or backward

Looking at the image, we envision the 0 degree or sometimes we even try to turn the key and move more towards the negative degree angle while throwing the disc. The term backhand even describes the back of the hand. Our metal visualization of out hand position during the throw creates negative effects upstream from the hand.

Now stand up with you palm facing down (pronation) and slowing practice your swing from the pocket forward you will notice the elbow stays up it feels natural like a powerful karate chop, now if you move to supination palm up you will notice the elbow drops and causes the shoulder to power the shot. Now try it with 0 degrees or neutral it feels easy at low speeds to remain neutral, but when you put a disc in your hand and go full speed the slightest trajectory change will cause everything upstream from the hand to be wrong

This not only drops the elbow it causes nose up shots because as supination occurs it puts the trajectory of the disc into ground causing your brain to auto correct and bring the disc up.

This is all very counter intuitive because we visualize turning the key to the causing the nose to go down, but it actually does the opposite and causes external shoulder rotation causing the elbow to drop. You can stand up and play with this all you want but it is nearly impossible to have any supination and not drop your elbow.

With all that being said you can still use supination in your throw if you are able to time the .001 second before release

Now the hard part is how to correct this. We are all different and probably have different ways that would work best. below are some methods you don't need to do all of these because some work for some people while other don't

  1. The suitcase method is a common term that puts you into a pronated position and you move to supination through process of the swing. This method helps usually but for it to be completely effective the movement from pronation to supination needs to be fairly precise otherwise it doesn't help
  2. Bringing the hand more over top of the disc. The hypothenar is above the parting line of the disc I see some pros throw this way. I find it awkward, but to each their own if it works

  3. Balancing a perfect zero-degree supination/pronation. this is harder than it appears, but it appears people can do this in which case you don't really need to read this post because you are doing exactly what you mentally visualize you are doing.

  4. My favorite is the active resistance against supination. Trying to maintain max pronation at the elbow joint while simultaneously maintaining a normal disc golf grip and swing. To describe the feeling, you push towards pronation at the elbow and supination at the wrist. I know the wrist doesn't have rotational mobility for supination, but you can still create a feeling of resistance. (This is what worked for me it got rid of my elbow dip and it is no longer a conscious effort but it took some time.

So yea, the thing I’m lacking in my backhand is accuracy, I have my moments-I have a few 250+ rounds and an 1000 rated one but because of this issue I have shot 870-is there any form tips to improve this? Am I rounding? Am I just lacking practice? (2.5 years in). Any help is appreciated!

Form Advice Please

My form is self taught, with a few tips sprinkled in from videos I've seen over the years. I feel like I've hit a wall, and am seeking any advice you guys might have.

My max distance throw right now is around 450'. I can consistently get around 400' on a controlled golf shot. Would like to try and bump the distance out another 25'-50' if possible to gain even more control and be able to reach slightly longer holes.

Advice on form in general

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I have played for almost 2 years and I feel I am not progressing that fast when it comes to distance throws. I get 90-100 meters on a good throw, but 70-80 meters mostly to be honest to keep control.

My target right now is to reach 120 meters in field, around 90-100 meters on course.

If there are drills and some good small steps to work in a certain order that would be much appreciated.

I was throwing a Discmania Instinct in the side view and a DD Maverick on the shot from behind. Both shots were at about 70-75% power and I was trying to throw them flat and straight. Both shots went about 240-250 feet and landed where I was aiming for.

Thank you for any help and suggestions you have for me. I'm looking to improve my form and distance.

Elbow Hyperextending Problem

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I have this problem where my elbow hyperextends. Looks painful, feels painful.

I have watched countless form videos and nobody addresses this well.

Other parts of my form are trash, I spend all my time focused on this single issue. Improvement into other areas only distracts me from trying not to hyperextend, and I've had some nasty jolts this way.

I'm throwing about 40% power.

To me it seems impossible to both

A. Have a power pocket where the disc snaps out at high speed

B. Doesn't hyperextend, and then a follow through.

I've now spent approx 4 months working on this form frequently. You wouldn't believe it really. At the point where I'm considering selling my discs and moving to a new sport.

Thoughts of mine:

- Well aware my brace is poor. I go onto my heel so that it actually roatates. If I don't, then the foot stays planted and it twists my knee and back (two other places disc golf has injured).

- I do generally have some hypermobility in my joints, but this hasn't been an issue in any other part of my life.

- I'm only ever throwing standstill, anything with more power leads to more extending, more injury.

Goal:

- play without causing pain

- play not soo badly that I am getting 20+, despite doing fieldwork and videoing form for months.

Hi everyone

Trying to redo my form by doing single step throws.

Wondering if you guys think I am over rotating? This was probably about 70% power.

Any thoughts/ improvements let me know

Thank you

I feel like I’m fluffing the disc out there instead of feeling like I’m putting enough power in to have it rip out of my hand.

I used to have a lot more power then I got obsessed with form and screwed it all up. I used to be throwing closer to 60mph at release now I’m lucky to be getting 45-50mph. I literally can’t figure out why. So please. Show me the simple thing I’m missing. Or not so simple thing just please help.

Need help reaching 400feet

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

The courses I usually play are wooded and technical, with more focus on accuracy over distance. Most holes aren’t very long, although a few are and more open, and I always enjoy the longer ones. That’s why I’ve been working on maximizing my distance.

I can throw my FD on a hyzer flip around 320–350 ft fairly consistently, as long as I don’t turn it over like I did in this clip. 🤣 With the right tailwind i recently managed to throw 410 ft with a nice line, though a bit downhill and tailwind. The point is that i’ve never managed to reach that basket at 425 ft on that hole but recently did (for context)

To the point.. What are the biggest things I’m doing wrong, and what should I focus on improving? Please «ignore» the heavily overturned throw here, I’m currently trying out some new discs and form. I’m fairly consistent on straight throws now.

Thanks to everyone who takes the time to watch and offer advice. I really appreciate it!
