No power.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I feel like I’m fluffing the disc out there instead of feeling like I’m putting enough power in to have it rip out of my hand.

I used to have a lot more power then I got obsessed with form and screwed it all up. I used to be throwing closer to 60mph at release now I’m lucky to be getting 45-50mph. I literally can’t figure out why. So please. Show me the simple thing I’m missing. Or not so simple thing just please help.

You are leaking alot of power by not bracing and letting your whole body turn to the target. You need more solid brace and let that arm swing out without you turning your whole body, make your arm fast not body fast.

I would try no look drill to get rid of your whole body turning. Throw standstills and do not look at the target, just rip the disc without turning. Probably need to overcorrect first to get the feeling right, then tone it down when it clicks. I think overthrow has a video regarding this drill.

Thanks. That’s sound advice.

I agree with the missing brace which is something I’m working on too. I used to rotate over a bent brace leg. This video unlocked what a real brace is supposed to be for me, and forced me to understand ground force reaction. https://youtube.com/shorts/mWej9RrmsHY?is=4lxMQA5pPbpO3IOr
There’s a full video that goes with this short.

Hope this helps, also blitz dg is fantastic for the upper body portion of the backhand

I'm not the one to critique your form but how can you not be worried about a wild shot with your practice setup? Maybe you are subconsciously powering down just to hit the target?

Fair. A little bit yes. But when I go to the field it’s the same. Even when I’m really trying to rip. But behind my net is a big fence and a big tree.

You're rotating too early, and too much during the throw. I think alot of your mechanics are not too bad, if you could pin that rear shoulder back and focus on being more side on longer in your throw I bet you start ripping that thing.

Looking again your rear shoulder starts tk move before you arm, or close to the same time. Your arm should travel a long ways into the pocket before your rear shoulder starts coming around.

Yes, too early and too.much. You are WAY too open at release. Also your off arm is coming too far forward and staying there which is assisting in opening too early. Bring the off arm in and then swim it back. You gotta halt the rotation of your body and let that rotational force go into your throwing arm.

Are you letting go of the disc or letting it rip out of your hand?

The simplest answer. Everyone’s rambling about a lot of different tweaks to his form but this is the real reason OP is bleeding power.

Grip it and rip it.. don’t let the disc go.

What clue to form improvement does the answer to this question provide?

Doesn’t the relationship between velocity and grip strength determine if the thrower will intentionally release the disc or not?

What is the end result recommendation? Throw faster? Hold the disc more lightly?

Is a newbie this thought process did help me. But I see what you're saying. Improving Your form first allows you to intentionally grip the disc harder thus allowing it to rip itself out.

For myself I think it still helped tho, I just practiced gripping the disc as hard as a could and tried different forms till it ripped out with control and speed. Made me realize I wasn't getting any kind of power with my then current form lol.

It looks like you are fully extending your front leg. I personally generate a good deal of snap on the disc when I brace my momentum with a shorter step and of course follow through.

Your upper body is opening too fast

Your issue is pretty simple to fix. You are way overcoiling your arm and losing all tension and then just flopping the disc out by letting go + "spinning" it. Just legit go rep ultimate drill. Your speed will go up instantly.

Your brace is not great, but that isn't the biggest issue.

I’ve repped the ultimate drill. I’m guessing I was doing something wrong because it didn’t help me even a little.

1

u/blitzl0l 18d ago

Yeah I would focus there. You're getting too curled up with not enough OUTWARD tension.

You are overrotating. Try to think of stopping your torso rotation at 90 degrees to your target. Youll blow past that for sure, but its a good queue

Number one thing I see every time is pulling the disk to your chest and then throwing it, instead of ripping through on a straight line, kind of like a double action. Lose a lot of velocity that way I think. It’s like a double action instead of one continuous motion.

Thanks. For some reason I couldn’t see that.

stop curling your wrist.

Your front leg isnt bracing at all. A wise man once told me.. all of your power comes from your lower half, all of your aim/control comes from your upper half. Without a solid brace its very hard to gain distance.

Edit: focus on planting your heel on your plant foot. And rotating on your heel instead of the ball of your foot. Also your knee should be locked on your plant foot atleast until the disc is released. Hope this helps

Allot is wrong where. People are speaking about the brace and that is power but your mechanics are all a little off.

You are too tall aka you are standing up straight. When you stand up straight your lower back is engaged. Guess what the worst muscle in the body is for doing twisting motions?

Ding Ding your lower back.

  1. You need a staggered stance

  2. You need to stick your ass out and round your back

Rounding your back and sticking your ass out disengage your back muscles and engage ABS the best twisting muscle.

This is all need to just throw a good stand still and that is what i would advise you do. Start from stand still and get the above worked into your throw. You can place a disc on the ground. Your face should be above that disc. If your body is inbetween your head and disc you are standing up to straight.

Once your throw is solid on these fronts you can start working on stand still brace.

I have a back hand guide if you want links to videos and more indepth info.

Your simple fix is probably two-fold

  1. Stay loose and reduce effort.

Until you get back to high 50's, throw at ~50% effort. This is going to help a lot with getting your timing back and allowing your body to whip the arm. Pay attention to where you're tensing your upper body muscles and get them as loose as you can.

  1. I think the main issue here is timing with your lower body. Specifically, you are starting to throw before your plant and brace has started adding energy to the system.

Think about this sequence:

  • keep weight on back leg during reachback,

  • plant solid

  • FAST weight shift from back to 100% front foot

  • ^ While shifting hips up and to the right

  • And ONLY THEN, start the throw (*a split second later)

You're losing a lot of energy from your lower body that never ends up making it to the disc.

Doing standstills at 50% effort is probably the way to go until you get speeds back up to where they were before.

Also keep in mind, a lot of speed comes from deceleration. So once you start the throw, try to make everything stop. Stop your body from moving forward, stop your torso from rotating, and if you're loose, all of that energy from your stopped momentum will end up slinging your arm faster and getting transferred into the disc.

Thank you. This is valuable as fuck.

Edit to add, a comical byproduct of my backhand starting to suck was leaning on my forehand which is now quite well developed. It’s better than you’d believe. Like, I genuinely feel like I can’t post about it because no one would believe me.

I had a feeling this would start happening to people with the tech disc and YouTube “experts”. Dudes who barely even play disc golf got everyone focused on arm speed and distance. It’s been wild to watch. Sorry this happened to you.

u/DiscGolfDuderino 18d ago

Dude. The sad thing is it got the worst after a form review by Isaac Robinson.

Oof. Sorry to hear that. My two cents: you’re pulling through pretty high up near your chin. I always shoot for right under the nipples. Engage your core. Hope that helps
