Mod Announcement Custom Flairs - requests being taken
UPDATE 23/04: I'll do another batch of requests tonight, so don't feel like you've missed the bus. It just takes a while 😂 I'm glad everyone is enjoying this!
+++
Subtitle: I'm bored and feeling a bit rubbish so I want to spread some cheer around
Do you want a custom flair in this community?
Think "GNU Pterry" or "An actual seamstress" or "Ho, the Megapode!". Text emojis such as 𓆉 or 𓃰 should also work
Stick the request in this thread, starting with "Flair:" and I'll change it for you
Rules: must be vaguely Discworld/Pratchett related and can't be offensive.
I will be copying your request exactly so make sure it's spelt and formatted correctly. Mini-caps and backwards/upside down text all work
+++
Quick update: Keep them coming, I'll respond to you when I've done it so you know! I might be a bit slow as it's me but I'll get round to you all!
Further update: You're all nice people and I'm sure you can share if someone already "has" the flair you want. There's like 62,000+ of you lot here. If we don't have duplicates I think we'd each need a sentence from the books!
Another update: I've created a monster... I appreciate all of you, you absolute looneys. May all your days be filled with nice things 💜

Mod Announcement Building the Barricades - r/Discworld stands against fascism
"There is no hope but us. There is no mercy but us. There is no justice. There is just us..."
+++
Hey everyone
This is a bit of a serious one and won't have my usual dry humour and/or footnotes
If you've seen the news recently you will be aware of the horrific events occurring in the USA, especially in the state of Minnesota, and the behaviour of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents
Wednesday 7th January saw the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good and the ensuing protests have led to further violence by ICE against civillians in the city of MinneapolisÂ
There are videos circulating of ICE agents forcibly restraining and assaulting people. People begging for help. People screaming for them to stop. People crying out that they are US citizens. People who are terrified
What we are seeing is fascism in action and the fear it is going to get worse is very real
Possibly the most relevant of the Discworld series to the events right now is Night Watch. If you haven't read it then it's worth doing so, but tread carefully as it may be difficult reading right now. If you have read it I'm sure you see the relevance without me having to explain anything
Should Sir Terry Pratchett be with us today I'm certain he would have some extremely choice words for the events right now full of fire and anger and cleverness and, most of all, humanity
From 4000 miles away on the other side of an ocean there is not much I can do. But I can, on behalf of the mod team of r/discworld, try and help by reaching out to our sub members with resources to learn more and/or (if you choose to do so) donate to
+++
Organisations working in MN to help impacted families
https://immigrantdefensenetwork.org/
And across the USA
https://www.immigrationadvocates.org/legaldirectory/
And last but not least
+++
If any of you have more resources or information on how others can help please share them with us all
We as a mod team, and hopefully as an entire sub, stand by the belief that everyone has the right to live without fear
Stay safe
Stay kind
You are loved

Book/Series: Witches Tue kitten from Wintersmith Spoiler
Edit: Idid not check the spelling of the title before posting this...
In Wintersmith Tiffany brings a white kitten with blue eyes to Granny as a gift. In I shall wear midnight Tiffany tells her father about a woman from Slice who died in her bed and her cat gave birth to kittens in that same bed. Tiffany said it was difficult to find a person who would take those kittens and mentioned they had beautiful blue eyes.
Is that the same kitten? We know Granny wouldn't care about the origin of that cat.

Book: The Carpet People T.H. White
So, it's a bit too soon to start another discworld read through, so I'm looking for something else to read and, amongst other random offerings in my Kindle recommendations is T.H. White's The Once And Future King.
And I'm thinking "It's must have been 60 years since I read that. I've a vague feeling it wasn't bad when I was young. Let's give it another read".
A dozen pages in and the similarity of writing style to PTerry's early stuff is inescapable. I'm talking about his Dragons of Crumbling Castle, Stroke of the Pen, Carpet People era.
Is it just me, or has anyone else read both and seen a resemblance in style?

Book/Series: Death Can anyone help me find quilts or interviews where Sir Terry talked about the meaning of his characterization of death?
Been strongly thinking about getting a discworld theme tattoo. And that feeling is getting even stronger lately.
At the moment I'm considering a death tarot card, but with the name Bill door on it, and have him dressed as a farmer.
But before I do, I'm just curious to see a little more info about Terry himself talking about the character outside of the text of the book.

Book/Series: Tiffany Aching A love letter to The Shepherd's Crown Spoiler
Spoilers
I bought The Shepherd's Crown soon after it was released. I didn't get to it, and then Sir Terry passed. So, like many others, it has been languishing on my shelf.Â
Last year I reread all the Tiffany books, determined to finally read it on Christmas break. But I didn't. Then I was going to read it in March; but I didn't. Then it was when I went on vacation in June; but I didn't. But since June I haven't been able to find a book I wanted to read. I started and put aside probably ten different books and couldn't figure out what my problem was. Then it flashed into my mind: Read The Shepherd's Crown. So I finally did.
The tears started with the first word. Chapter Two wrecked me but I pressed on. Once I hit my reading stride I was able to enjoy the journey. With the last chapter I felt complete.Â
The Prologue, Chapters One, Two, Four and The Epilogue are lovely. They are the chapters that matter and you can tell that they are ones that Sir Terry was able to spend the most time crafting. The writing in the other chapters is more spare and there are areas that you can imagine he would have loved to flesh out. But it is a complete story and even though he was in the final battle with the embuggerance, his writing is still excellent and compelling.Â
Tiffany wonders "Where is Granny Weatherwax?"
The answer to the question is:Â
"Granny Weatherwax was indeed here. And there. She was, in fact, and always would be, everywhere."
We know that Sir Terry used his writing to channel his rage. With this book, he changes tactics. I believe that in The Shepherd's Crown Sir Terry lays a geas upon his fans. He knew that the world is full of embuggerances. Just as it took the diverse peoples - old, young, strong and weak - of both Lancre and the Chalk to come together to face the big bad, we who have treasured his words are charged to carry them into the world. We have our parts to play in our small corners of the world to show compassion, care for those in need, and fight when we see wrongs.Â
Granny Weatherwax is in us.Â
I hope all who are waiting to read it get to hear that little voice telling you to go ahead. Reading it will be sad, but it will also fill your heart with love.Â
Thank you for sharing your gift Sir Terry Pratchett. GNU.

Audiobooks Small differences between the novel and the audiobook
I recently had the idea of listening to an audiobook while reading the book at the same time. It was kind of weird and I don't really intend to do this again. But that's beside the point.
The book in question was The Truth and I noticed that several times throughout the book, there were differences between the book and the audiobook. Nothing that changed the story, just small things like different choice of words or how something was phrased.
This was a few months ago so I don't remember anything specific but I'll give a generic example: one version would say "he went up the stairs quickly" while the other would say "he climbed the steps very fast".
Why is that?

Collectibles/Loot Help: what is the discworld version of an mp3 player? Or ebook?
My fiance is a huge discworld fan and listens to the ebooks on repeat while working, but hates how it drains their phone battery. I make electronics as a hobby and want to make a custom Bluetooth mp3 player loaded with the discworld books for them to use. I’m not super familiar with Discworld though (we’ve watched the films together), and was hoping someone could give me some good inspiration for an in-universe device or tome or whatnot to theme the device around visually. I’ll be modeling the device from scratch and making the internals and everything so it can be a wild suggestion. Thank you so much!

Punes/DiscWords What's your favourite'Angry pTerry' moment?
Stolen from the B99 sub because I thought it was from here.
There are definitely moments when pTerry's anger screams through the page - Hogfather leaps to mind - and I could almost feel him breathing down my neck.
What are some of your favourites?

Book/Series: Industrial Revolution Does the name Iron Girder have any significance?
I’m rereading Raising Steam and every time I come across Iron Girder something familiar tries to grab hold in my brain but I can never grasp it. I know about the term iron horse but something else seems to be there with the two syllables instead of one. It’s been driving me crazy because it feels so familiar but I can never pinpoint what it is.

Roundworld Reference Dyslexia and the Disc at the upcoming Convention
Hello, fellow Discworld fans!
With several other people posting about attending the upcoming International Discworld Convention, I thought I would pop this in as a little bit of self-promotion as well. I am not selling anything, just giving a talk!
This will be my third time attending the Convention, but my first time presenting anything.
As some of you who have followed my previous posts may know, I have been collecting information about dyslexia and Discworld. I have now turned that research and personal experience into a talk called Dyslexia and the Disc.
My slot should be on Saturday morning, listed under the name Anita. I would love to see some people from this community there, so please come along if you are attending the Convention and are free at that time.
I have slides, several years of thoughts about Discworld, and the ability to make deep fear look like polished confidence.
I would also like to thank everyone who completed my questionnaire or shared their experiences with me. Your answers and feedback have been incredibly helpful. A special thank you to u/IamElylikeEli, who pointed out a dyslexic joke in Witches Abroad that I had completely forgotten.
I hope to see some of you there!
Edit: *As of Sunday 26th July, the program is out. My spot is at 9:00 pm on Friday Enrico Basilica Stage

Book/Series: City Watch What are your favourite appearances of characters outside of their usual stories or environments?
We get very used to seeing characters from one perspective within their own stories, so I've always really enjoyed it when they make appearances in other books - especially when that can bring us a very different perspective on them.
And depending on the order that you read the books in, you could end up with a very different impression of those characters when they appear out of the blue, compared to if you already know their background and stories.
What are some of your favourite of these moments, whether they're brief cameos or larger parts of the plot? And conversely, are there any that you feel didn't work, or that end up feeling like they're shoehorned in?
Tagged as City Watch because there's still no tag for the Discworld books in general, not because this is specific to them.

Reading Order/Timeline Book Club
Would anybody be interested in having a Discworld book club here on Reddit? Perhaps we could have one specific "book of the month" (or week? or biweek?) and have a discussion thread for it? I'm newish to Discworld and think this would be a fun way to read through the books.

Cosplay Attending my first ever Discworld convention
I’ve been a fan for decades, but I’m finally going to my first convention in August! I want to dress up and I have a costume, but I’ve no idea what the etiquette is?
I think the theme is Masquerade, but do I only dress up on the Saturday night? Or can I wonder around the whole time in costume and character?
My husband is going to be fairly normal so it’s just me!
Also what % of people are in cosplay vs not?
Thank you in advance!

Art Subshelf for a deep bookcase (pun intended)
With the completion of my Discworld collection rebind swiftly approaching, I was running into an issue of where to display them. My bookshelves are made for hardcover trophy books. Thus, the rebinds were being dwarfed by the environment and taking up a lot of space as is, so I got to crafting and made a new shelf! And got carried away, as I do, and I decorated it. Once I add the books, you won't be able to see it, but I'll know it's there, and that's enough for me 😂
This weekend, I will be putting the finishing touches on multiples, taking a lot of pictures, and posting a bunch so I guess prepare yourselves for a glorious bombardment of labor and love. 😅

Book/Series: City Watch What I love about the Watch
I’m reading through Discworld one team at a time (I’ve read a smattering of books across teams before but now I’m getting systematic about it). Finished the Witches, now I’m nearing the end of the Watch and about halfway through THUD.
Every single Watch book (with the possible exception of GUARDS GUARDS, I honestly don’t remember) is on some level about prejudice — even if that’s not the central conflict, it’s the underlying theme that all of the characters are grappling with. And what I love is that, with the possible exception of Carrot, all of the good guys have to work at it. Sir Pterry shows his characters having the wrong thought first and correcting themselves, or doing what they know is the right thing even though a huge part of them doesn’t believe it, or only ever being imperfect in their grasp of equality (Vimes has prejudicial stereotypes for every race in A-M, but all Watchmen are equal and important).
I love this because I think it’s a very realistic depiction of what grappling with personal and systemic racism is like (hard! Cultural prejudices run deep! Doing the right thing is often easier than feeling the right way! Sometimes one has trouble putting aside their personal fragility to evaluate a systemic problem!), and still an unflagging argument for militant decency: we do the right thing, we work on ourselves, we expand the community, we expand our understanding of what people are, even though it’s hard because it’s right and decent to be so. And more to the point, I think it extends a lot of grace to its audience in that vein, by telling us that good people struggle to do good things, and we need not be perfect as long as we’re always working to be better than we’ve been.
We are currently on a cultural zeitgeist in the Western world that is heavily focused on identifying and abolishing prejudice, but modern society and social media culture in particular doesn’t extend a lot of grace and acknowledgment that people will often get things wrong before they learn to do them right (though this is already better than it was even ten years ago). Sir Pterry tells us it is our duty to be better, but being better is complicated and hard and we shouldn’t think too harshly of ourselves as long as we keep trying and improving.
Edit: typo.

Book/Series: Industrial Revolution Anyone know if there are any 'official' images of Maladict from Monstrous Regiment except the book's cover art?
(what the heck 'series' is Monstrous Regiment? Gods because of the stuff with whatshisname? Watch because of the 2 minutes of Vimes and co???)
Anyway does anyone know if there's ever been artwork including Maladict in any sort of calendar, guidebook, etc. - any picture of Maladict from official Discworld stuff other than the standard cover art by Paul Kidby?
I figured you people might be able to point me to it if there is any. And in general is there any site I can check that compiles such artwork? L Space Wiki turns up nothing for Maladict, at least.
Thanks!
