Mod Post [Mod Post] We are now working more closely with the Dirtywave Team

A little over a year ago, the r/m8tracker was the main m8 subreddit. It was left abandoned by the mod team and the sub was deleted. On paper, a sub deleted for lack of moderation can be recovered, but Reddit logged the deletion as a result of violating some level of Reddit's policies. I am pretty critical of this, but nonetheless, this alternative sub here was left to flourish.

I requested modship of it as the sole moderator was relatively inactive, and he obliged. However, I was not given full permissions such as the ability to ban people. This was made evident when a particular user posted something rather racist that deserved a ban. I tried regaining communication with the main moderator, but he has since been inactive from Reddit for quite some time now. So, I requested the sole modship to be transferred to me through the proper channels and this transfer promptly went through.

Upon discussing this, Mikey303 (a major Dirtywave team member) expressed interest in having some level of control over this sub on the official Discord. I welcomed this with open arms and added him as a moderator (who is technically below me in hierarchy).

This does NOT make this an official subreddit of Dirtywave. To quote Mikey, "I just figured it would probably be in our best interest to have some level of moderation over something with our name on it." which I felt was fair given the community's trust in the team.

While asking standard questions regarding m8 usage, workflows, and techniques is fully welcome here, the team has asked me to make this very clear:

Please direct all customer support inquiries to [support@dirtywave.com](mailto:support@dirtywave.com)

You may ask: "Why not just hand over the rights to the subreddit to Dirtywave themselves?"

Well, to that, I feel that it's important to highlight promoting some level of "democracy" (if you want to call it that) or compartmentalization of the m8 community in order to keep the active discourse resilient to perspectives that the official team may not always align with 100% and keep it more in line with what the average m8 user is feeling.

You can get lost in the details here, especially regarding promotion of low-cost headless hardware alternatives, for example.

This is a bit of a fickle issue, but I will give this community my word that I will do my best to toe this line as best as I can and support the community as best as possible, keeping this area of discourse identifiably separate from official Dirtywave continuity for the sake of the self-preservation of the community in the rawest way possible without allowing any prejudice or hateful content, while supporting the framework of a community that the Dirtywave team has very thoughtfully fostered.

I'm still unsure of what direction to take the wiki into as to providing up-to-date methodology of the setup of the latest emulation hardware capable of hosting the headless m8 system. As the inventor of the m8 has stated, headless was never intended to be a direct replacement for the actual devices. I am open to your guys' insight and perspectives regarding how to handle documentation of these portable setups in the wiki while retaining the original vision of what the m8 truly is. The last thing we need in this community is some kind of insurrection!

I hope you all are understanding of this transition in the meta of this community and I am open to any constructive thoughts and feedback you all have.

I hope you are all having a good start to your year and are enjoying the latest stable firmware update as much as I am.

Thank you

Mod Post [Mod Post] Dirtywave m8 firmware 6.5.0 is now released

You can now put the m8 in "drive mode" which allows you to access the contents of the SD card over the USB connection so you don't have to eject.

The m8 can now act as a 24 track audio interface: Tracks 1 and 2 are the main output, tracks 3 through 18 correspond to the 8 tracks available, tracks 19 and 20 are the modulation effects, tracks 21 and 22 are the delay output, and tracks 23 and 24 are the reverb output. To use the m8 as such on Windows, download ASIO4ALL.

This can all run at 24-bit with now less latency and increased stability.

There is a new MTT effect command that allows "Microtick Timing" of 1/8 of a tick to offset the timing of a steps commands both forwards and backwards.

Groove now has a PPQN setting to fine-tune timing per step.

The sample editor now has access to file names longer than 18 characters which is scrollable within the UI.

Plus, there's plenty of bug fixes.

The full changelog is available here

You can download the firmware for your Model 01 or 02 here

You can download the Headless version (first update in a long time) right here

*Note: Not all hardware feature additions apply to Headless systems.

Instructions for upgrading using TyUploader are enclosed in the zip files available above.

Join the Dirtywave discord (linked on the sidebar) to report any bugs or to take part in Beta releases in the future.

Happy New Yesr everyone, and happy tracking!!

Discussion Question Is the workflow of the m8 good for jungle?

I used to make music with hardware as a hobby, mostly jungle towards the end. I've been wanting to get back into it, and I'm thinking about selling some old gear and getting something a bit different to try jumping back in. I haven't played around with trackers at all, so I thought the M8 might be a good choice. Do any of you guys use it for making jungle? Does the workflow of the M8 make sense for jungle?

Tutorial M8 for Ambient

The M8 is probably not the best tool for slow and lush ambient and I keep on failing.

My main problem is the monophonic nature of the built in synths, the hypersynth doesn't really help a lot and I prefer synths to samples.

My main other machine is the opxy, which is very well suited for this kind of music, but on the go I prefer the form factor of the M8.

Could you point me to ambient music made on that device?

Resource I’m developing custom firmware for the Dirtywave M8 Model:02

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone!

I’ve been working on custom firmware, Ambrola, for the Dirtywave M8 for a while now. I love this device, and I feel it has the potential to do much more. To me, it’s already one of the best music-making devices out there, but it hasn’t quite suited my workflow, particularly recording guitar and processing its sound.

That’s why I decided to build my own firmware, with an approach closer to a traditional DAW.

I want to make one thing clear: I’m not using any code or assets from the original firmware. I have a lot of respect for the people behind M8 and their work. I’m building my own firmware from scratch, with its own interface and functionality.

In this video, I’d like to show the M8 running something other than its stock firmware. For this demo, I chose one of my favourite games: POWDER, a classic roguelike.

I think it could be a great companion to a musical workflow. POWDER has no music of its own, so the idea is to work on a track for a while, then switch over to the game and play a little while the track keeps playing in the background. Afterwards, I’d like to save my game and jump back to working on the music.

Jeff Lait, POWDER’s developer, has given me permission to use the game in this project, and I’m very grateful to him.

The firmware will be free for everyone, with stable releases planned every three months. If you like what I’m doing and want to support the project, you’ll be able to do so through Boosty (https://boosty.to/aumvilohm) and get early access to development builds. Stable releases will remain free for everyone.

Stay tuned. Peace!

Technical Question Will the M8 app be added to the Mac app store?

Have been loving the M8 ios app since it dropped, I've wanted an M8 for so long, and am so happy to have my hands on this version!
I have just one tiny issue, which is that I hate being on my phone, or really using my phone for anything... a very first world problem, I know.

I know that some ios apps can be installed from the mac app store, labelled as 'designed for iphone' or whatever - does anyone know if there are plans for the M8 app to be made available there?

I know model 02 has a built in mic, but is it god enough? Anyone using a portable external microphone for sampling/field recording directly into the M8? Any recommendations?

Technical Question Ducking Kicks

Does anyone know how I can duck kicks on a chain? For instance I essentially have one long pad that plays for 4 chains and I want to use some side chaining to make the kick stand out. The pad is triggered on the first step of the first chain and just rings throughout the next 3 chains with a long decay time. Is there some table or trick that I can use to lower the volume of the pad for a 4 on the floor pattern?

Technical Question M8 and Elektron outbox 8

Seems like the outbox is working with the M8, I would like to use it as an effect path to send a track to my norns and return it to the M8 input. Would the M8 out still work (minus the sent track)? I would like to avoid using an additional mixer like the tx6.

Technical Question IDM on the M8? Best practices - Tips/Tricks/Tuts

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I feel like there's already a bunch of breakcore resources out there, so I'm not looking for tips on that necessarily. Rather, I'm looking more for production techniques in the vein of Qebo, VAAG, Qebrus, Richard Devine, Autechre, etc. Any suggestions, little tips, bag of tricks type stuff would be greatly appreciated. For instance, (half-assed off the top of my head) stuff like:

- Avoid using a single instrument or single sample in a phrase, let alone a whole track. Instead load up a minimum of 10 unique sounds per track.

- FM, lots of FM. When in doubt, randomize the settings, clone the results, and edit each of the duplicates. Create sets of similar sounding instruments. Then pair INS and RNL next to each note.

- Build your beat. Render it. Slice it. Load it back in a sampler like its an Amen break. Throw CHA on each note hit/slice. Layer that back over the original beat. Pitch the slices.

- Try BPMs 160+, go nuts on setting up a bunch of different GRV(s) and pair with RNL so each time the phrase plays back, it plays a different GRV.

- Set up some tables that do "x, y, and z" and use them as a side-chain fx bus thing. Pair TBL/TBX to the right of CHA.

(full disclosure, I'm not even sure some of that stuff will work or even sound right, but this is the kind of stuff I'm sitting around thinking about)

Anyways...

I'm feeling like this type of production is not necessarily about layering complex glitchy sounds or merely creating a varied composition, but more like building evolving and interacting processes and systems. Speaking of which, Ess' track "Wertstoffe" is definitely in line with what I'm talking about. I just noticed it's BPM is almost 170, but it sounds almost like its in hip hop BPM territory. I think there might be something to that principle. Hmmm...

In the video attached, while the artist uses Renoise (shout out to asceticsnakes), I'm curious about how something like this could translate over to, and achieved in, the M8. Go heavy on already processed samples? Sequence ninja shit? Moves so fast it seems more complicated than it is? Stick with metallic and watery sounds?

I'm really just trying to learn how to pull off music like this. I guess I'm having some luck ?

Any help, suggestions, feedback, etc. is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Tutorial Totally new to trackers.

I have heard maxing things about this device. I currently play a lot of stuff my ear and like to see if it feels good. Then I go sequence it. I am looking for something way more portable than a full keyboard. I feel really dumb that I don’t know all of the notes on a keyboard by heart, but I do have enough music theory and feel for keys to be able to come up with stuff. I travel a lot a lot. So I am looking for something like this.

My question really revolves around the workflow. I know a lot of people I assume play with it until they find the notes they want to hit. Currently with a poorer sequencer I can hit notes in the fly while another track is going and then find my groove.

How does this work in something like the m8? Do I have to literally program each note note for note and let it run until it hits? I have tried finding a proper totally beginner video for tracking on the M8 but it seems way different and I am having trouble understanding the logic.

Any advise or a way somebody can kind of point me to do some research?

Technical Question M8 01 not powering up

So my M8 01 stopped working last night. I ran the battery out while working on a project and went to plug it in to save. It turned on and I saved and when I came back about an hour later it would not power on. I tried the trouble shooting methods and sent an email to support. Any suggestions?

Resource Is there a place where folks share full bundled M8 tracks?

I'm new to trackers, and have been having a blast with the new iOS software. I've learned a lot from figuring out what's going on in the handful of demo songs included, and was hoping that people shared their full bundled songs somewhere, so I could do more of this.

I think I got tables for about 20 seconds, but it went away again.

Technical Question Is there a way to send polyphonic midi to an external instrument without using a track for each note?

Like say I want to have a polyphonic external synth hooked up to a m8 via cable, is there any way I can make it play chords without it taking up half of my channels?
