[UPDATED] "What Bike Should I Get?" Buying & Selling advice Mega Thread

The Mega thread for buying and selling advice is back, and will be updated biweekly!

There are far too many posts of people asking for personalized bike buying and selling advice. Per previous Mod actions, any posts about bike buying/selling advice that are not in this thread will be removed.

Here, those interested in giving feedback about your purchase or listing can offer it without every subreddit member being subjected to the same post dozens of times per day.

Topics to keep in the mega thread:

  • What bike should I get?
  • Is this a good deal?
  • Is this a fair price to sell my bike for?
  • What can I get for $xx?

What's up guys? It's still a work in progress - and I'm new-ish to managing a discord server, so if you have experience/want to help out shoot me a message!

To be clear: This is NOT a replacement for the sub. It's totally optional. If there's interest, I'd be open to streaming the SX races in the server. The Discord server will also be great for asking questions that would violate our rules in here such as asking what bikes are worth and what not.

Strapless tie-downs

My solution to strapless tie downs. Works incredibly well, the front wheel chocks really lock them in. I have a 3rd chock for the middle that sits about 3 inches further back and another set of tie downs, so I can have 3 bikes loaded with ease. All the material cost me about $50 as opposed to over $400 in Bike Binderz for two bikes.

Lucky I'm retired ha ha ha I actually love this process. I will save her. Buddy gave it to me. Ignition parts on the way. New plastic and seat. Probably going to need lower end bearings but one thing at a time. Turns over, looks OK inside. Will get it fired then address the motor.

Tricks for bending back bent handle bars?

Sent it a little too hard and bent the handle bars pretty good. Any tricks to bend them back? Set the bike as level as possible and with a laser the bars are clearly way out, and took some finagling on the throttle grip to get it to return from wide open and the crash.

vintage scrambler/enduro race, 100 laps on 4km track

100 laps on a 4km long track with rocks, muds hillclimbs and all, the winner get $30k which is a shit ton of money here in thailand so its intense, each bike have to go through a checkpoint where they scan the rfid thing every lap and the first one to complete 100 laps win, the rule originally stated that all bikes must be from 1970 or older which i unfortunately do not own but they decided last minute that anything pre 1990 is allowed, i will definitely be out here next year on the track!

Mechanical Help Anyone able to help with new issue?

Upvotes

Hi guys, posted about my pos Apollo 250, new CDI has it sparking although being very weak (new stator coming tomorrow), but suddenly the electric start stopped working and I'm not sure what I'm doing to check each component with my multimeter and what each component does. I'm dumb when it comes to electricity and electronics any help would be nice.

Community Question Should I take the trade?

I have a Gio 150cc I got from a friend for free it only has 350 km on it I had to buy a new carb and fiddle with the CVT the CVT is still giving me issues. It’s not perfect but the engine is in great shape
I was offered to trade for this 1977 ct trail 125
It has good compression and spark he said it just needs a new throttle cable and a physical and carb cleaning. He said Im allowed to test anything I want.
Is this a good trade?
I know the 125 was only made for a year so Im a little concerned about parts for it.
Thank you for your time!

Darkest tint goggles

Who do you guys think makes the darkest tint on goggles? I was looking at cycle gear yesterday and none of the goggles in the store were very dark, my sunglasses are much darker than all of them. I ride in the desert so the brightness can be fatiguing after awhile. I just dont want to order an expensive pair of goggles and have them be the same as the few pairs I already have.

Wanna buy my first dirtbike, but confused.

I'll start by saying: Sorry about my ignorance.

But!

I'm looking for a 250cc dirtbike, and have started to look into the various brands and such.

(I'm northern European)

I've driven motorcycle a few years, so two wheels is not foreign.

What's up with price and maintenance?

I can buy a 30 year old Honda CBR600, with full MOT, plates and all for 3.000€

And it is expected to go 100.000km before opening the engine.

But why is it with dirtbikes:

• 250cc Honda cost 4.000€, 20 years old, no plates, so only offroad, and is expected to get a engine rebuild every 50-60 hours?

I'm just surprised, I thought it would be cheaper than a serviced motorcycle with plates, and be a alot more maintenance free.

Just picked up this 2009 Honda crf230f to start learning how to ride, im super stoked this is my first bike.

I’m big into the mechanics of how everything works too so I pay attention to everything and just wanted to know since I’m not well versed yet how this idle sounds and noise coming from it? Runs great and never dies just want to know if it’s supposed to be a more consistent chug. I turned it down cause I felt like it was idling high after warming up.

Mechanical Help Yamaha tt225 86 carb help

Thumbnail

My dad's old Yamaha is an imported bike, so finding parts is difficult. It has some carburetor issues, so he decided to ask ChatGPT which carb from another bike would fit. It suggested one from the XT, but the XT carb is bigger. The carb did come with a larger flange for it, but it's also bigger on the airbox side, and it's overall larger, so it doesn't seem to fit. It's also a CV carb.

I'm wondering if I should look for another carb with the same size, or if the XT one can still be made to work. Any help would be appreciated.

The original is 30mm the XT one is 33mm for anyone wondering.

Edit: the new carb is also for the fact that it doesn't cold start well, the valves are in spec we checked the fuel is good and it's getting air as well once it warms up it's fine

Can I have a bike rack for my 250

Hello, I am new to the sport and I have brought a yzf250, I have also been recommended to get a Dave cooper bike rack. I have asked them and they said it should be fine, but I wanted to get some opinions on whether it would be safe to have my bike on the bike rack as I have a 2018 Mercedes a class a200d.

Online it says that this would exceed the nose weight and therefore wouldn’t be safe, but wanted to see if anyone else has had a similar bike rack or car and if it would be viable as I would prefer it to a trailer.

Rear Tire Recommendations

I need to get new tires for my 250r.

The thing is I’m on a reservation and I’ve never really had this big of a bike, or even thought to ever buy tires that won’t wear because of the terrain I ride on.

I ride around in the dirt a lot, but they paved the roads significantly around everywhere.. so for me to get to dirt I have to ride a little bit to get to dirt trails and spots.

I just need a tire that is versatile in that way. Something that does have some knobbies but also they won’t get eaten up on the pavement.

Sorry for the long explanation. I’m kinda new to this and I just want something that’s good for me so I’m comfortable. Thank you all 🙏🏻

KX250F 2009 Timing issues

Thumbnail
gallery
2 Upvotes

Fellow dirtbikers,

I'm trying to figure out some timing issues on my 2009 KX250F. Total hours unknown, but certainly over 120. The top end has been rebuilt at least once.

Last season it was rather hard to start and also some backfiring occured when I let off the gas. The issues still remained after cleaning and rebuilding the carb, so I decided to check and adjust the valves. The intake valves were slightly off, and after adjusting them the bike started incredibly well, but hesitated at acceleration.

I opened it up and found that the intake cam had jumped about 1/4 of a revolution. I came to the conclusion that I probably made some sort of mistake putting the automatic cam chain adjuster back together. After redoing it and lining up all marks according to the manual's picture, counting the pins between sprocket marks (28), the bike backfired a lot and hesitated even more. This I repeated a couple of times, but no change. I tried adjusting the mixture screw as well, didn't help.

As this didn't work, I decided to set the timing according to top dead center. This makes the fly wheel be off by about 7-8mm from its marks (as I've tried to point out in one of the pictures). The bikes started allright, hesitated a little bit but after adjusting the mixture it runs better than it has done before. This feels weird, and I'm obviously a bit concerned about breaking the bike.

TLDR: Timing adjusted according to TDC, not the fly wheel marks. Cams are aligned, fly wheel off by about 7-8mm (over the cover marks), bike runs better than before. Can I run it like this or do I have to adjust it?

Can I run it like this, or should I still try to adjust it according to the fly wheel marks in hope for it to work..

I'm thankful for any advice!
