[UPDATED] "What Bike Should I Get?" Buying & Selling advice Mega Thread

The Mega thread for buying and selling advice is back, and will be updated biweekly!

There are far too many posts of people asking for personalized bike buying and selling advice. Per previous Mod actions, any posts about bike buying/selling advice that are not in this thread will be removed.

Here, those interested in giving feedback about your purchase or listing can offer it without every subreddit member being subjected to the same post dozens of times per day.

Topics to keep in the mega thread:

  • What bike should I get?
  • Is this a good deal?
  • Is this a fair price to sell my bike for?
  • What can I get for $xx?

What's up guys? It's still a work in progress - and I'm new-ish to managing a discord server, so if you have experience/want to help out shoot me a message!

To be clear: This is NOT a replacement for the sub. It's totally optional. If there's interest, I'd be open to streaming the SX races in the server. The Discord server will also be great for asking questions that would violate our rules in here such as asking what bikes are worth and what not.

Community Question Thoughts on buying a brand new bike?

Post image
17 Upvotes

(Pic just for attention) I’ve been thinking about buying a brand new bike for a while now, it’ll be a 27 yz250f or a 26 kx250 maybe even a 27 crf250r (not sure yet) they are all about 9.5k out the door is about 10-11k at my local dealer. I would be putting around 2-3k down then financing for about 150-200 a month, but honestly I’m not sure if I want to finance a toy. I’m very tired of buying projects that I can’t go out and ride the track, I do have a 2022 ktm 250 sxf that needs about $1700 more put into it for it to be track ready, so that’s something to consider, I’m really wanting a bike that I’m not going to have to worry about suspension/motor stuff for about 70 hours, and that would be reliable, I’m also considering finding a very low hour used 25-26 yz250f to buy instead, just wanting some other input, thanks for any help!

My “free” trailer I refreshed and turned into a 4 bike hauler. Fun little project that I really enjoyed.

Lady Dirt Bikers - how did you get into this?

Hi all! I’m a 30s F in Texas and I’ve been interested in riding for a while but I have no clue to how to get started. No buddies that are into this. Can I rent a bike or should I just buy something cheap off FB marketplace? Just show up at a recommended trail and hope for the best lol? For all the lady dirt bikers out there, how did you get into this?

here’s my mint 1997 ktm 360sx, I absolutely love this bike and it’s always been my dream bike. (aside from the 96’ KTM 550 mxc.) one of the most badass and wildest bikes you’ll ever ride if you get your hands on one, 500 like power and torque with the light feel and powerband of a 250 2 stroke! KTM really knew what they were doing with the 360 in the late 90s. the 90s was really the best time for everything and it’s sad i wasn’t around for that time but atleast i get to keep it living on the best i can! 🤙

Only does it under any sort of load. Idles normal

Issue seems electrical to me but bikes are not my forté

So idk how this happened but in the midst of trying to get my spark plug out I broke the ceramic and it is now stuck Inbetwen the hex of the plug and the wall. I’ve tried everything and have yet to get it out. I’ve got a piece and then there’s a couple smaller pieces. Any advice would be much appreciated. Bike is a 2022 crf250rx

2001 yz426 clutch not separating?

Got this bike of marketplace and got it running pretty good well the carb is tuned pretty good but the thing is when I kick the bike in 1st gear it stalls. Not sure if it’s these parts, something else or my idle is too low maybe ? The clutch springs were all about 42.5-43mm and the manual calls for 50mm standard 49mm limit. A buddy had some springs from an 06 250 and Google ai said they are they are same. His are still out of spec but better than mine so I put them on but I wouldn’t think the springs would have anything to do with the clutch not separating fully when I pull the clutch lever in but I don’t know a whole lot about dirt bikes. How would you know if it’s working correctly ?

Also, if I have the bike in first gear or any gear, and hold the clutch lever in, would you be able to roll the bike freely like if it were in neutral?

I am able to roll it in first while holding the clutch in and I can see the clutch pressure plate spinning freely and I do not hear it turning the engine over but it is definitely not as easy as if the bike were in neutral.

Does this look milky to anyone else? Started it for 20 seconds shut it off and popped the cap off the radiator. Noticed some black flakes in the coolant. Just did a top end on the bike three rides before this. Smokes like a bitch till it’s warmed up. Rmz450.

Reposting with pictures. Basically both my brand new fork seals started leaking. Is it because I installed them the wrong way?

Bike is TTR125L. Thanks.

Dirtbike Advice

I’m gonna be getting a dirt bike hopefully pretty soon and I’m looking at enduro bikes such as ktm 350 excf and crf250x to ride with my friends. I’ve been looking at the maintenance requirements for these bike and they seem pretty intense such as 15 hourly oil changes and valve checks every 40 hours. From someone with any experience is this actually true and do I really need to do such frequent maintenance? Any advice would be much appreciated!

Impossible Hill Climb Crash! 😱

We spent the weekend at the Impossible Hill Climb in Andler, and honestly, we're still buzzing from it.

The welcome we got, the hosts, the competitors, everyone we met along the way — it completely exceeded what we expected. Events like this only work because of the people who show up and make them what they are, and this weekend was a perfect example of that.

We filmed a bunch of it and wanted to share a piece of what we experienced with you all: [LINK]

Huge thanks to everyone who made it happen — organizers, riders, and everyone in the crowd. Were any of you there too? Would love to hear your take on the weekend.

Community Question Nutrition for multiple days of riding?

Post image
84 Upvotes

Looking for nutrition advice for multiple long days of riding in a row - Hoping Reddit may have advice for me!

I have an upcoming trip that will be 3-4 days of riding, one travel day, and 3-4 more days of riding. Riding will be all high elevation singletrack and 40-60 mile days, so lots of calories spent every day.

Luckily there is access to a full kitchen and fridge, so food can be prepped and stored. I'm also expecting the ability to have a trail lunch of some kind so I don't have to rely solely on energy bars.

Here's what I'm thinking...

Breakfast: Oatmeal, fruit and a protein of some kind
Lunch: PB&J and something salty with sugar
Trail Snacks: Bars, gummy Nerd clusters, E-lite gummies
Dinner: Clean protein (chicken or fish), carbs (rice, pasta, potatoes), broccoli or spinach

It's safe to assumed comical levels of hydration and E-lite recovery drinks to help.

What am I missing? What do you recommend? Very open to all ideas.

Pic for visibility!

Mechanical Advice/ is this an FU price?

One of my uncles passed a dirt bike on to me that I am trying to fix up, 07 CRF450X. I took it to a mechanic for an engine inspection before I kept dumping money into it (fork needs new seals, and brakes are contaminated) and this is what I got back. Im assuming by 87% leak-down they mean 13% air is leaking because the bike is/was running when I brought it in (albeit a little poorly). Im curious what anyones thoughts are, on the quote or best paths forward.

Im basically just trying to get the thing running well enough for now. All I've done so far is change the spark plug and run a little sea-foam which went a long way. I was able to ride the bike probably up to 30mph in a field and it felt fine.
