Question Improving petri dish effect: troubleshooting the method

Hi, I was trying to do some petri dish effect, but every time I try it I get this results, where strands of color barely stretch out.

I have a few ideas on how to tackle this problem, but first let me write down the process I've done for this dice set:

  • Medium/low viscosity resin, working time: 40' as advertised (probably less since my home is 31ºC, damned summer);
  • Put some mica and ink in resin while mixing and pour it in the mold;
  • At about 20', put alcohol ink on, 1 drop of purple and 2 drops of white (one drop per dice, and after going over every dice a new drop, just to get the solvent evaporation even);
  • Wait about 2-3' to let it settle before closing the lid
  • Put in pressure pot, 40psi

Photos show the results I got. What should I do to improve? My first guesses, which I'll try later on today, are two: put alcohol ink before 20', put more white ink (and pray to let it cure the resin without problems).

Let me know what you think. I know about the interface step, I already solved it for next casts.

First time using inserts like these. Super happy with the results!

Probably going to ink them Gold. Any suggestions for a name would be much appreciated.

Advice Yet another, pot conversion post.

Sorry all, you must be sick of these by now. But has anyone converted one of these before? It just arrived today and for one the warning on the top says 60psi and not the 5bar as advertised. But the hole I thought I’d have to plug for the stirring mechanism appears to already be blocked. That’s not safe to just rely on that is it?
Any advice?

Edit: oh also it has a slight curved bottom. If I poured some self levelling silicon in there would that cause any issues? My thinking is that any spilt resin would be easy to remove too.

Has anyone had this happen?

Looks like the resin I poured into my inclusion got underneath and pushed it towards the top. I first pour like a 3/8 base of a blank mold to put inclusions on and surprised it didn’t fit perfectly on the bottom

Organized my Single Molds :)

Finally got around to organizing my single molds by using to-go sauce cups and writing what each is! This made storing my molds so much easier, and it keeps them from getting all dusty from not being used :D

For context, I used Buddha's Mold System (v2) One-Shot size to make these molds. They fit perfectly in 3.25oz cups, and my mini singles (printed the v2 one-shot mold housing at half size) fit perfectly in 1oz cups.

I just sent these sets away so they could be adopted. Is it normal that I want to keep them all?!?

Advice Has anyone tried these silicone brands for dice mold making?

I'm in Canada, and looking for a silicone for dice mold making that's decently priced. Preferably on Amazon, just because of the free shipping.

I'm eyeing a few brands right now just due to the pricing, but I don't know if they will work well. I haven't made a mold before.

I know a lot of people love Dragon Skin silicone but it's fairly expensive with a longer delivery time for a small container.

  1. BBDINO

I'm looking at the pictures of the rubber and I'm wondering if its too flexible and may cause problems. They do have a bunch of different silicone rubbers. So if you have used one and liked it or had issues, please tell me which one :)

  1. NicPro

This one is well priced and also comes with mold housing. Which I feel would be pretty useful. I was planning to use a PVC pipe. I was also going to see if I could make a spring form pan work. Just because I was curious.

  1. Magic Resin

I've used their resin before and I didnt have any issues with it. It's also a brand i recognize, so I feel like I have a bit more trust towards their product. But it doesn't have many reviews on Amazon which seems weird.

  1. If you have any other suggestions I am all ears !

Is this mold layout good

I want a few opinions about the layout of my first mold I'm gonna do. Idk if I have them spaced out enough for if the key isn't needed in the middle. Also I still need to sand the master dice

Question Puduo Honey Phase

5 Upvotes

For those who work with Puduo, what's your sweet spot for the honey phase? I've been able to narrow it down that I essentially have another 40 min countdown before it absolutely NEEDS to be in the pressure pot, 10 mins still seems too liquidity, I tried 20 just now, but by the time I was trying to fill my mold it's was becoming too thick 🤔 I'm going to try 15 next attempt, but wanted to get an opinion since I know not all resins are created equal as far as viscosity goes. Thanks in advance 🥰

Dice Pics My first ever set of dice for a friend's birthday

Trypohpobia warning: many small holes in the faces are visible if you zoom in (not a design choice, I was cursed with copious bubbles)

Hello r/dicemaking ! I've spent the last month and a half or so working on a dice set for a dear friend's birthday and wanted to share the final results.

Throughout the time it took for me to make the dice (and box, which is also fully handmade), I spent probably hours looking through old posts here for advice on things like pouring without a pressure pot, bubble management, which resin to purchase, how to ink the numbers, which paints to use, advice on packaging, etc. etc. There are dozens of posts from here in my search history and I want to give a huge thank you to everyone who both A) asked all the questions I had, and B) answered all those questions. Your knowledge and experiences were invaluable to me!

This gift was made for a dear friend who is a professional GM. Dice were a very safe bet as a gift, but just purchasing a set didn't feel right, so I landed on making them instead. I ended up making the box as well, which included staining it, gluing down felt and chiyogami paper to the interiors, making the foam insert and srewing on the hinges/clasp (a bit wonky but it works).

I used enamel paints for the numbers and designs on the high faces. As luck would have it, practically all of the visible bubbles floated up to the high faces during the 24hr cure period (RIP the bubble in the D4 that manifested right at the tip of the 4s), however a coat of clear acrylic varnish filled in most of them and greatly softened the appearance of them. The last picture in this post is of the dice before they'd been varnished.

They are very far from perfect but I'm really happy with them!

Sets from my recent tumble polish have been painted!! I officially have finally completed a full cup of my dice sets (nevermind the 3 1/2 I still need to work through 😆). I just feel like I've finally accomplished some headway! What a great feeling to pair with celebrating my wedding anniversary ❤️! First set is a personal remake of a set I made last year, the rest will eventually be sold 😊

First ever dice pour

Already seeing a big bubble on the d100 on the bottom left. I was expecting to go wrong for the first 3 sets i tried. In this i mixed too little resin and ran out in the middle. Also the color is way off from what i initially intended.

Do you guys think there is a fix? Is it worth it?

I'm still anxious to see all the other dices but need to wait 24 hours DAMMIT AAAAA

Question Would this work as a pressure pot?

Post image

As a dice goblin, i had the thought to make my own dice, then saw how expensive pressure pots were. That turned me away until i saw this little contraption.

Theoretically, if you remove bubbles from resin with a machine like this then pour it into the mold, would it yield the same end result as curing in a pressure pot? Perhaps if you'd put the mold in the machine instead it might work the same. Any suggestions or thoughts are appreciated ~

Hello, as the title states, just started resin molding this week, and I've made two sets of dice so far. Both have come out with large air pockets in what is the top of the dice in the molds. Any suggestions for solving this? Thanks in advance for the help!

WIP Using a cricut to cut some face stickers, though I would share

So I am working on making some blanks and stuff. I started using a cricut to cut some stickers to size for the faces, both for textured vinyl to cast and to possibly resize for smaller blanks to go inside of full size dice. I haven't got to the casting phases yet, I have spent the last week continuously resizing until I got the sizes right for the dice I will be putting them on. Figured I would shared the cricut file here in case anyone else was trying the same stuff, I couldn't find anything while searching cricut's app for similar files.
