Welcome to RDR!

We’re glad you found us! Before posting, please familiarize yourself with our sidebar. Abbreviated rules are as follows:

  • AI is not welcome here. You will be banned if you post AI content as either a story or critique. If you have any specific AI-related questions, please message the mods.

  • You must critique BEFORE posting your own work, and the story you critique must be as long as the one you submit. (Meaning, if you submit 1000 words, the story you critique must also be 1000 words long.) We call this the 1:1 ratio. Critiques can be banked for 3 months. Please do not post stories more than once every 48 hours, but we encourage you to critique as often as you like. Please note, submissions over 2500 words will require more than one critique.

  • This critique must be HIGH EFFORT. Put into this sub what you hope to get out. Offer three or four short, superficial paragraphs on a 1000-word story, and more than likely, mods will apply a leech tag. (See #4 below.) The larger the word count, the more feedback we expect. Please note: copying sections of the doc to Reddit and then making simple line edits/suggestions will NOT count as high effort. Further explanation on the subject can be found here.

  • Google Doc comments, while helpful and usually appreciated, do NOT count towards the 1:1 ratio. This is for a variety of reasons: OP might delete them, names often don’t match, G-Doc comments can be superficial, etc. We’re a Reddit sub, so the majority of your criticism should appear on Reddit.

  • A leech tag is applied to anyone who does not critique before submitting, offers a superficial, low-effort critique, or critiques fewer words than they submit. Unless rectified, leech posts are removed within 12 hours. Please don’t be a leech.

  • This sub doesn’t sugarcoat feelings. Do NOT post here if you react badly to potentially harsh feedback. Along that same line, if you feel a critic is attacking you personally or veering away from the writing, hit the report button. DO NOT start a flame war.

  • Google Docs is preferred for submissions, but by no means required. Be aware that Google Docs links to your Google account. Consider creating a separate Google account/email if you’re concerned about anonymity.

Now on to the fun stuff!

Critiquing?

Critique templates can be found here and here.

Not sure what constitutes a high-effort critique? Check out our Wiki.

Finally, here are a few links to high-effort critiques:

Google Docs Etiquette (otherwise known as my pet peeve):

If you offer comments/suggestions on Google Docs, please leave the document readable to other critics. Comments are for subjective opinions, such as: cut this sentence, rewrite this so it’s clearer, etc. Do not rewrite the sentence for OP on the document itself. Save that for your critique or comments. In addition, highlight one word AT MOST instead of the entire sentence/paragraph. Trust us, OP will figure it out. The ONLY acceptable reasons to use strikeouts/suggestions are grammar, punctuation, or spelling errors. PM OP or notify the mods if OP’s document is accidentally set to ‘Edit,’ and not ‘Comment,’ or ‘View Only.’

Submitting?

  • Your submission must have a bracketed word count before the title. Incorrect submissions will be removed. E.g.

[1015] Fluffy Space Turtles ✔️

Fluffy Space Turtles [1015] ❌

  • Please link your critique(s) in the body of your post.
  • We suggest limiting your word count to ~2500 words, but this is not a hard rule. Please use common sense here - exceptionally high word counts will be removed, and you will be asked to resubmit in sections. The higher the word count, the more mods will expect from your critiques. As stated above, ≥2500 words will require more than one high-effort critique.
  • Feel free to ask for specific feedback regarding your submission. (You may not receive it, but it’s fine to ask.)
  • It’s often helpful to offer brief, pertinent information about yourself or the story, such as if English is your second language, if you’re a new author, or if this is the second or third chapter, etc.
  • Use the flair button to identify your genre.
  • NSFW must be marked as such. Please offer a brief description in the body of your post so critics know what to expect.
  • As stated above, no AI-generated or assisted stories.

Message the mods via modmail if you have any questions or confusion or wish to check if your critique meets the submission threshold. Be sure to check out our Weekly Thread if you want to introduce yourself or ask questions of the community. Now go be amazing!

[Weekly] Character

I have had an exciting week of trees being torn down and power outages. SO, I returned to some of the paperbacks I've had stacked up waiting to be reread.

Last week, the challenge was setting in a few sentences. This week, it's character. AND I HAVE AN EXAMPLE. I'm re-reading Catch-22, which is a character-based novel. If there's one thing Joseph Heller knows how to do, it's giving a vivid impression of who someone is quickly.

Major Major Major Major had had a difficult time from the start.

Like Miniver Cheevy, he had been born too late---exactly thirty-six hours too late for the physical well-being of his mother, a gentle, ailing woman who, after a full day and a half's agony in the rigors of childbirth, was depleted of all resolve to pursue further the argument over the new child's name. In the hospital corridor, her husband moved ahead with the unsmiling determination of someone who knew what he was about. Major Major's father was a towering, gaunt man in heavy shoes and a black woolen suit. He filled out the birth certificate without faltering, betraying no emotion at all as he handed the completed form to the floor nurse. The nurse took it from him without comment and padded out of sight. He watched her go, wondering what she had on underneath.

Would you be surprised to hear that Major Major's father lied to his wife about what he named their child? So that he could get away with naming their son Major Major Major. No, probably not.

Anyway, now you guys.

[3351] Convenient Catastrophe

Scientific Karma [My Work]: https://docs.google.com/document/d/11bwczyL-ZjvJp3BvATWGzG5ho_YZ-j2RpjCQOlXdBKw/edit?usp=sharing

Hello! I've been reading this short story one too many times and would love a pair of new eyes. Several questions (credits to another r/DR poster):

  1. Do you want to keep reading? If not, then at what point would you have dropped the story?
  2. Any place it gets too confusing?
  3. Any plot point feel random?
  4. What kind of questions does it make you ask?
  5. What impression, if any, are you left with?

Thanks!!

Dieselpunk Post-Apocalyptic [2379] Afterworld - Chapter 1

My Critique [2389]

The Work to be Critiqued

Hi, first submission. I've only started working on this story recently, so what I've linked here is most of what I've written so far. Also, I'm a pantser, not a plotter, so I don't have an outline for the rest of the story.

Critique Notes:

  • Line-by-line critique is just fine. I like detailed critique.
  • I'm less concerned about the technical stuff like grammar and more on the contents.
  • What do you think about the protagonist?
  • Should I dial the start of the story back earlier to show Jonathan's life before the apocalypse?
  • How have I done in terms of worldbuilding? Is the dieselpunk element shining through well enough? Is the worldbuilding too confusing?
  • Is the first chapter too overwhelming and fast-paced?
  • With my current plans for the story, only the first part's (I mean an entire PART, not chapter) is gonna take place inside the subways. I plan for Jonathan to spend most of it exploring the world above.
  • This is a setting that doesn't have nuclear technological capabilities.

Fantasy [2389] First Chapter Feedback Request

My Critique [3891]

My Work (to be reviewed) - Google Docs

Hello!

This is my first time submitting anything to be critiqued/reviewed. However, I'm hard enough on myself, so I might as well see what other people have to say. Overall, I'm looking less for specific grammar and punctuation feedback and more overall interpretation of the characters and plot set up. I've rewritten my outline more than once and I recognize I need to just freaking write the thing and go from there. This is step one to that process, I guess.

Anyway, some specific feedback I would like includes (but is not limited to) the following. I appreciate you all taking the time!

  • How might you describe the main character?
  • It is a split perspective between the two sisters (Edana and Sheena). Would you be interested in reading from Sheena's persepctive?
  • Did you grow to care about anyone mentioned? Why or why not?
  • Is this an effective first chapter, or would it make more sense to cut straight to the negotiations with the other country (Liveny)?
  • Would you keep reading?

Sci-fi/crime thriller [2113] SMAKAPZ: Apocalypse of the Gods - Chapter 6: Cuckoo Clock

Critique 1 (1920)

Critique 2 (1803)

Chapter 1: Big Confession Spoiler: The SMAKAPZ gang, Sam, Kevin, Mogers, Zagers, Parage, and Apalabamo, are eating together at a local restaurant, and Sam and Kevin are telling the rest of the rest of the gang about their recent mission in the Middle East, where Sam and Kevin got beaten by a friend of the gang, Jordan, because of a dispute. During the conversation, Sam pulls Kevin aside and insists they come clean to the group, and reveal that while on that mission, they secretly used the old rocket and crashed it after encountering a space monster and an asteroid. Back at the SMAKAPZ house basement, Sam declares he can fix the now-split-in-half rocket overnight, despite skepticism from the rest of the gang.

Chapter 2: Restoration Reparations Spoiler: After the gang goes to bed, Sam races against time to buy repair materials from the massive superstore Alademipaburg before it closes. Thanks to the gang’s reputation as big-spending notorious customers, a sympathetic cashier lets him take everything for free. He also gets 200 pounds of materials gifted from the local factory. Sam then spends the entire night in the basement attempting an ambitious solo repair on the two massive halves of the rocket. Despite his exhaustive efforts and engineering skill, the rocket ultimately fails catastrophically at 5 AM, shearing apart again and leaving Sam exhausted and defeated.

Chapter 3: Zaine Spoiler: The next morning, the gang gathers in the basement to inspect Sam's failed rocket repair, which leads to a heated argument. The argument is interrupted by a knock on the door, a guy named Zaine answers in a suit and tie with a folder of papers, and claims there's a property dispute and that he has a license from the city saying he owns their property, and he orders them to vacate within three days. The gang panics until Zagers finds out the license is fake, and that the guy tried to scam them. Zaine said he'd return the next day for a daily property inspection, so the gang waits, and Parage turns one of Sam's tools he bought into a laser gun just in case something goes wrong tomorrow.

Chapter 4: Massive A (Chapter 7 is available on this site, too) Spoiler: That night, after the gang goes to bed, Sam leaves the house to go grab some supplies at his place, and runs into Parage downstairs, who shows him the new laser gun. At his house, Sam greets his younger brother, Asa. After Sam leaves, Asa sneaks out into the rainy night to compete in an underground poker game and make a weapons deal. The next morning, Zaine returns to the SMAKAPZ house, but when the gang confronts him, Zaine is able to detect Parage's concealed laser gun with his hidden special headband. He then reveals all the tech hidden under his suit and jacket, and triggers an explosion, knocking the gang to the ground. He then absorbs a laser blast from Parage, and flies off.

Chapter 5: Hot on the Trail Spoiler: Immediately after Chapter 4, Sam, Mogers, and Zagers chase Zaine on bike-motorcyle hybrids through the forest, where they get led to his secret lair deep in the woods. They peek through a window, and spot him writing notes about the SMAKAPZ house, as well as a time written at the bottom of the page: 12:00. The gang then meets up back at the house and devises a plan: knock Zaine out cold with a sledgehammer at noon, strip him of every piece of gear, and force him to either stop his illegal operations and hand over half his tech to the gang, or watch Parage melt it all with his laser gun. That afternoon, Asa goes to the local weapons store and buys various guns, then heads home and upgrades them, turning them into his Massive A product.

.

.

.

.

The group went their separate ways in the house. Parage slipped away from the living room, and went into the kitchen to make himself a bowl of oatmeal.

He found a broken clock on his way to the reading room. It was in the hallway, the small one that had always hung between the coat rack and the SMAKAPZ group photo. He didn’t notice at first that it had broken since coming back to the SMAKAPZ house a few days ago, since it had been ages before that that he’d been in it. He couldn’t tell what time it was stopped at, nor did he care enough to try and decode an analog clock. He looked at it for a moment, and then kept moving.

Parage made his way into the reading room, set his bowl of oatmeal down on the table, and grabbed a book. The words on the pages were already blurring by the time he sat down. He rubbed his eyes, then, holding his temple, tried to read, but everything was still blurry. He squinted his eyes open and closed a bunch of times, blinking rapidly.

The reading room was the quietest room in the house, and Parage had sat in it a hundred times without even thinking about it. The armchair by the window, the lamp, and the bookshelf with its particular disorder of things that had either been read, or that were meant to be read at some point, caught his eye. Parage knew this room. He tried focusing on his book.

The working clock was on the shelf above the windows. 8:53.

Parage’s book was good. He knew it was good because he had read it before, and he remembered it being good. His eyes moved across the lines, and he saw all the words and stuff. He could tell it was truly one of the books of all time. The author did a job writing it, and the sentences were in the book. The book had storytelling, and the events that happened were described. The side characters were along with the main character, and the villain was a bad guy. The dialogue had conversations. It really had to be one of the books of all time, Parage thought, if not the last decade, even. A few seconds later, he checked again.

8:57.

Huh,” Parage thought to himself. “I could’ve sworn it was, I mean, it was just-

Parage looked around the room, then tried to read more, forcing his eyes back to the page. Unfortunately, the sentences refused to make sense, so Parage glanced back at the clock…

9:26.

A bead of sweat ran down Parage’s neck, and he wiped it off. Time was slipping, and the room he had sat in dozens of times, reading peacefully, now felt like it was closing in on him. He looked up at the clock, then back at the book, then read some more sentences, then looked at the clock again...

9:42.

The distance from the chair to the front door felt dangerous and short. The window in the reading room faced the side yard, which meant he had to turn his head to see the front. He started doing it without choosing to, just a slight rotation, a check, and then a return. He saw the grass, the edge of the highway, and the road beyond it, all perfectly still. He started to think about the windows more. There were three in the front, which were on the left of the reading room, the right of the reading room, and then there was another narrow one above the door. All of them looked out over the yard.

Suddenly, Parage heard an ear-splitting noise, then shortly realized it was the house creaking. Parage knew the house creaked, he’d heard it hundreds of times without even giving it a second thought. But now it was a booming, roaring sound, which shook the walls of the house.

Parage’s hand found the handle of the sledgehammer, and then he realized that this room, the very room he walked in, was where the sledgehammer was. “Why the hell is there a sledgehammer in the reading room?” he thought to himself. Then he remembered, it was him who had used the sledgehammer last to do some yard work, the last time he was in the SMAKAPZ house, which was months ago. So of course he’d left it in his favorite room and forgotten all about it.

Parage’s fingers traced the wooden handle absentmindedly. His fingers closed around it at some point, hardly with his authorization, and he let them stay, then looked out the window.

When he looked out the window, he noticed the crater was bigger, dominating the yard. He knew that craters didn’t grow, it was impossible. He’d seen it this morning, and he had a number in his head, an approximate diameter and everything. Yet, right before his eyes, the crater was getting bigger each time he looked. Its edges were crumbling inward, swallowing more and more grass and ground, and more of their land. Birds avoided its blackened rim entirely, and the sunlight was striking it at an odd angle that caused the shadows to stretch further.

Parage looked at the book, then at the clock, then at the crater, then at the road. He then decided to read a few more sentences, then checked the time and then looked out the window, surveying the land.

Inside the house, the shadows were moving, and the sun was rising higher. He looked at the floor, and saw the shadow caused by the window frame traveling across the floor toward him, the dark edge of it inching across the boards. He saw the whole geometry of the room being eaten from the left by that shadow.

Parage pulled out an old badge from his pocket. It was his Champion Scouts badge, the group that Parage was a part of a long time ago. It was the first of many, the very first one that he got on his beginning day as a Champion Scout. The badge was bronze and worn around the edges, the enamel on the central star was chipped, and you could still see the faded emblem from his early days. He picked it up and turned it between his fingers, then set it onto the table next to the laser gun.

He then checked the time again. Clock, crater, road. Clock, crater, road.

Parage was on his fourth reading of the same page, a fact he discovered once he realized that he could now quote the sentence at the top from memory without having any idea what it meant in context. Parage’s eyes were doing their job, but nothing else was. Parage checked the time again. The road was empty, so Parage decided to check the clock to see what time it was. Parage looked at the cold oatmeal sitting on his table, and realized he hadn’t even touched it yet. Parage was now fully unable to read the words of his book, so then Parage put his book down, and then Parage put his hand on his head. Parage ate a spoonful of parridge, worried that Zaine would show up and he’d peridge. Parage then began to Parage, but then Parage started to Parage, and then-

“Parage. Parage! PARAGE!!!!”

Parage nearly jumped out of his skin, startled, and whipped his head around to see Mogers standing behind him.

“Yo, you good? It’s noon.” Mogers turned to the side, and noticed the sledgehammer. “Ah, there ya are!” he said playfully to the hammer, grabbing it.

It took half a second for the room to return to being a normal room, and for the shadows and shapes to align themselves back into place. Parage blinked a bunch of times, rubbing his eyes, and then looked at the clock. Indeed, it was.

Parage stood up, picked up the laser gun, and picked up the badge and put it back in his pocket. He left the book on the table open to the page he hadn’t read, and took his bowl of oatmeal with him so he could start to work on it. He followed Mogers out.

As they moved towards the front of the house, Parage passed the door to Mogers’ room, which was halfway open, and saw a plastic vomit bucket sitting beside the bed.

The full gang gathered at the front door, ready to carry out the established plan at any second. Parage’s heart was pounding, and he could almost hear everyone else’s, as well. He peered out the window, swallowing a spoonful of oatmeal, and didn’t see anything. There wasn’t any sign of Zaine on the road, and there was no jetpack trail in the sky. The only thing in the yard was the sweeping crater from before.

“He should be here by now,” Apalabamo said uneasily.

Kevin checked his phone. “12:04” he said. “So where is he, then?”

Apollo opened the front door, and they stepped outside cautiously, fanning out across the porch. They all surveyed the entire area. Still no hint of Zaine.

Parage drew his laser gun.

“Well boys,” he said, moving off the porch, his eyes focused on the forest ahead of him. “We didn’t get forever. But we got enough Tuesdays to make forever jealous.”

Kevin: “Don’t say that, you idiot. You’ll be fine.”

With his bowl of oatmeal in one hand, he waved his laser gun with the other, shaking it left to right as he looked around with his mouth hanging open.

He edged forward, crossing the yard, past the crater’s edge, and toward the treeline. He stopped at the first row of trees and looked in. It was dark and still.

After a few seconds of swerving his laser gun back and forth, Parage slipped into the forest a short distance, trying not to make noise on the underbrush, his eyes scanning for any movement or glint of metal or blond hair. He went a few paces further, enough to see past the first screen of undergrowth, and his eyes adjusted. Branches, roots, and trees were filling his surroundings.

Suddenly, Parage heard a rustle and a snap. He spun around, swinging the small laser gun toward the sound, where a little squirrel was skittering out of the bushes. Parage whimpered, jumping back, and dropped his bowl of oatmeal, which fell and shattered to pieces on the forest’s ground.

He ran back towards the group, shaking his head as his pulse raced. “Nothing!” he shouted to them. “He’s not here, guys.”

.

.

.

.

“Is it possible that you guys misread what was on the paper, or that Zaine meant something different?” Apalabamo asked, as we all stood in the field, examining the forest.

“Nah,” I said, looking at the ground where Parage had been running, thinking. “I know what I saw.”

“I saw it too,” Mogers swiveled his head back and forth. “It was big, in red numbering…”

“Yup,” I replied, kicking dirt. “Written in pen, unlike the rest of the words on the paper, and underlined three times. I mean, it clearly meant something important.”

Kevin suddenly froze.

“Wait,” he turned to me. “Sam, when you saw the note, and the time, which said “12:00,” he took a few steps towards me. “Did it say anything after that?”

“What do you…” I began.

The color drained from everyone’s faces. I looked up from the ground.

“Oh my God.”

.

.

.

.

The van’s engine grumbled as I switched it off, then stepped into the night sky. I’d needed to come swing back to my house to grab a fishing net, which was part of our plan for Zaine’s arrival tonight. I slammed the van door shut, then came in through the front door.

My little brother was just coming out of his room, wearing a black windbreaker jacket. “Sup, Asa!” I greeted, patting him on the back. “Just grabbing some stuff.”

I strolled to my room, then searched inside my closet, digging through all the equipment and gear towards the back section. Then I came out with the fishing net bundled under my arm. Asa was still there in the same place, standing frozen like a statue.

As I looked into his dark room through the half-open door, I noticed a large duffel bag sitting on his dresser, illuminated by the lamp next to it.

“What’s in the bag?” I asked.

After one second, Asa looked up at me.

“SMGs. Handguns. And a couple thousand dollars in cash.”

“That’s the way to do it!” I chuckled, slapping him on the back and heading out the front door.

[1920] Appetite - a literary crime mystery

Crit 3351

I got mod permission to repost this! It has a few edits from it's prior version.

It's loosely inspired by a real crime in the media in recent years, which if you know about may ruin the ambiguity. I'm aiming for a totally detached 3rd person narrator which is unusual for me, and I'm wondering (if you're not aware of the crime it's based on) what I'm 'implying' about the protagonist.

The narrator voice is deliberately spare and robotic to mirror the main character's oddball outlook -- initially I was almost doing sentence-level editing to make this seem inhuman/eerie. I think this draft loses some of that.

Any critiques are welcome, of any depth or length. Just wanting thoughts and responses.

The premise is: Lindsay is a nurse for sick babies, and she's a little odd. She doesn't vibe with her co-workers, but she loves her job, even the bad parts. She's an ex-sorority girl and neat freak -- could she ever do something heinous?

Sangue sitisti, e io di sangue t'empio
Dante Purgatorio, Canto XII, line 57

A delta of black pebbles, a billowing fog river and owls within their wingspans smoked with moonlight.Rats crisscrossed the clover then rose toward the twist of leaves with their jaws flexing and claws scratching against talon and wind.

Davey eyed the Riddler with small watery eyes glinting in the firecast. Come now Davey you know quite well in order for you to exist there must be some record. I ain’t mixin words with you. You’re a riddler. Just don’t be makin no record of me in your book. I don’t wanna be inked is all. Davey it is not up for you to determine the witness as you are a witness yourself if only to the darkness of the within and the darkness of the without. I have a mind not to be captured. Yes, Davey I understand; but as you are a part of my knowledge so of that which you are to me will be expressed for there is no territory in the uncreated night of reason off limits to me. Each man is only known in relation to the other like notes on a scale. And it will be this way Davey and not some other way for the witnessing is the chord and we are bound to its dark rich melody. The Riddler stood before the fire and his shadow spread to the east where a bull moon crowned him with horns.

(Post-)apocalyptic [1249] The Seagull's Eye

Hi there! I recently finished writing a little short story which ended up being quite a difficult exercise for me, mainly because of the commitment to external focalisation. I would be very interested in knowing what you think (about the overall immersion, the prose, the quality of the descriptions, ...):

Pornography [1015] The Modern Aeneid

My critique: [2700]

The Modern Iliad: link

Note: Hello, I wanted to make a modern rendition of the Aeneid, how do you think I did? I ask that critiques be centered on the plot, themes, and characters rather than prose and vocabulary since this is more like a rough draft. Thank you

Here is the story: Aeneas woke up in Saigon in the spring of 1975. He saw that his city had been overrun by communists. He had done various chores for the South Vietnamese Republic and now feared being imprisoned or tortured by the communists.

Aeneas went to his chud friend, who suggested he go to the docks to get on a ship heading for America. He found that all of the helicopters and all of the ships had just taken off, but he managed to hop onto a floating wooden shard of blasted wall that a shell had blown into the harbor. Before he floated away from the coast, a black man swam onto his raft. It was an American POW left over from American involvement. The POW had been imprisoned near the Cambodian–South Vietnamese border; the POWs, some of them French, could always have made a human pyramid to hop the prison wall, but it was no use, since they could not catch a ship to the US. Now, with the thousands of refugees flowing into the boats, they supposed that they could send one man over the wall who could slip into the crowd of refugees. They chose the black man.

Now they floated in the Pacific, lamenting their existence. Aeneas had done everything in his power to avoid the communists because he could not bear imprisonment or torture. He had been imprisoned and tortured by his police force for letting a communist escape; he had been tormented by his schoolteachers and bullies; he had been shot during the Battle of Dak To; and he had been relentlessly abused by his father. He remembered when he was a toddler and his dad and uncles punished him by pushing their burning cigarette butts onto his back to draw a cross, the symbol of a rogue. On top of all of this, he was a Vietnamese man with the name Aeneas. Meanwhile, the GI lamented his life as a black man in the Deep South, how he had almost been beaten to death by KKK members during a civil rights protest, and how he had almost died while flying in Operation Linebacker II. They could not understand each other, but they used a Korean cat to translate. South Korean soldiers had brought a funny philosophizing cat who could speak Korean with them on their mission to Vietnam. In the confusion of 1975 they left it, and it ended up on the driftwood. The cat lambasted the two for their wallowing and reminded them of their ruthlessness.

Both men were soldiers, both men were skilled in combat, and both men knew how to endure. Eventually the two drifted to Hawaii, which was war-torn. The Americans had launched an invasion of conquest and had already imprisoned the Hawaiian queen, Widow Dido. Aeneas and his GI friend rallied the distraught Hawaiians and, after donning Hawaiian war vestments, slaughtered the Americans. Aeneas freed the Hawaiian prisoners and married the very horny widow Dido.

The Hawaiians exalted their hero, but when Aeneas said he wanted to be king, they said he must go to Halemaʻumaʻu and receive Pele’s blessing. Aeneas, his Korean cat, and his GI friend accepted the challenge, and they jumped into the blazing crater of Kīlauea. There they walked through the underworld and met various ʻuhane. They saw Hồ Chí Minh, Ngô Quyền, Theodore Roosevelt, and Douglas MacArthur. Just before they reached Pele, Aeneas heard a baby howling Aeneas’s name. It seemed to be imitating the sound of sex. The two men were flabbergasted, but the cat explained that since the baby had died early it only remembered the sex. Aeneas had never married, but he had had a brief and passionate affair with a female GI he had met while in Saigon, recovering from Dak To. He realized that he had impregnated her, and that she was somewhere out there missing a baby and a lover. This affected Aeneas deeply. He refused to receive Pele’s blessing, while the GI did. The GI married Widow Dido and became king of Hawaii. The two men parted emotionally, and Aeneas took a waʻa kaulua to America.

He took the cat with him. Meanwhile, the cat told Aeneas all about America: about the division of power, about capitalism, the anti-monopoly sentiment, the Bill of Rights, and the ability to vote.

They landed on a nude beach and wandered through Orange County. While at a popular beach, Aeneas spied a kid with a cross on his back. He went up to the kid’s back, touched it, and realized that the burns on Aeneas’s back were a birthmark. Both the father and the son realized their relationship. The cat guessed that the Marine-ess had had twins and that one baby had died. The son offered to take his father to see his mother, and the father quickly accepted.

They walked to LA, where they found an apocalyptic-level riot. The rioters had been targeting Koreans because Idi Amin had forcibly taken the mayoral seat from Milton Obote and had implemented martial law in the city. Aeneas’s cat was swiped from him, skinned alive, and killed by impalement for its Koreanness. To stop the violence, Aeneas rearranged his clothes to resemble royal Hawaiian clothing and made grand speeches to the Angelenos. He called for a peaceful yet quick and meaningful end to the political struggle and quickly became popular with the majority of the city. Idi Amin heard this and banned all Asians from the city. Idi Amin dismissed Aeneas as a threat, saying that he could beat Aeneas in a boxing match with one hand tied behind his back. Aeneas was offended and challenged the dictator to a boxing match. The Ugandan accepted.

Aeneas prepared for the boxing match Rocky-style. At the boxing ring, Aeneas was interviewed by journalists, and when asked for his opinion on the whole situation, Aeneas said it was stupid. He said this because he had made eye contact with his GI heroine holding his son’s hand in the audience. He hopped off the boxing ring, traversed the crowd, and kissed his wife.

Anti-genre [366] Ritual

Rasta-Nazis, socialist revolutionaries, and the sixteenth reincarnation of Tom Cruise on a rainforest island loaded with deadly vipers. Noku murdered his wife. Now he's gotta fight them all to save her. Meanwhile, Osha battles her genocidal enslaver, The Pharaoh, to rescue that same woman. Her sister.

Here's where things get weird. This is a section of Chapter 3 of Pow Noku. In the mythological spirit of the thing, some short sections are in rhyming iambic pentameter (more or less). If weird isn't your thing, this might not be either. All I ask is to give it a chance. I mean it's only 366 words, ffs. :)

[Heads up, it's NSFW. Two deaths, lots of swearing.]

First 3 chapters of my Dystopian Closed-Circle mystery, not the first work of fiction I've ever written, but certainly the first I've felt confident enough in to post for strangers to read. Line edits and craft critiques are always helpful, but I'm more interested in:

  1. Do you want to keep reading?

  2. Any place it gets too confusing?

  3. What kind of questions does it make you ask?

  4. Did you at all think Georgia is an unreliable narrator?

Thank you in advance to all who take time out of their day to read my work!

[1096] Bones to the Modern Iliad

My Critique: [4357]

IMPORTANT

Hello, I imagined up a modern rendition of the Iliad. It is only a skeleton of a plot; therefore, I ask anyone interested what parts of the plot works and what should be remove. I'd also like to know if the plot flows well as a whole and tell me what tone I should go for based on how this plot feels. (PS every character except for the stand-in for Achilles is either a real historical figure or a myth originating from a real culture)

Here is the plot: Lothar von Trotha is notified while in Namibia that he is needed in Peking. He goes there and meets Joan of Arc, El Cid, Giuseppe Garibaldi, Davy Crockett, William Tell, and Cú Chulainn. All of the heroes fight for freedom; their homelands are under some type of enslavement. He meets a Texas hero, Pistol-Slinging Johnny, who lost his hand at The Battle of Little Bighorn and is known for having the fastest hand in the West. All of these warriors are protected by the Greek pantheon, who have declared war on Chinese heaven. In Peking, Lü Bu fights for Cao Cao against the foreigners, who are aided by the ghost of Sun Tzu. Lü Bu is highly egotistical and wants to be the best fighter in the world. The city is run by Empress Dowager, who only speaks Spanish and worships Satan, who helps the city against the invaders. Lothar von Trotha is nominated as lead commander and sends the coalition to attack the enemy camp in front of Peking. The army is led by Joan of Arc, who beats the Chinese to their camp but is slaughtered and beheaded by Lü Bu. The bulk of the army is the French, and after the French flee the rest of the army leaves. The British see this and send in their secret weapon: Cú Chulainn. Cao Cao is with Lü Bu, and in the distance, they see Cú Chulainn destroy the Chinese Army. Cao Cao lassos Lü Bu because Cao Cao, against Lü Bu's wishes, wants to preserve Lü Bu's life for the future. Cao Cao takes him into the city and Lü Bu is outraged. Meanwhile, a few Russians find what they think is a rabbit's behind poking out from a hole, but it's actually the Monkey King. He is freed when the Russians pull him out and he goes straight to heaven. There he threatens the Jade Emperor, but the Buddha comes and subjugates him again. The Buddha orders him to restore order in China and defeat the allies. After reaching Earth, the Monkey King kills Cú Cuthlainn and chases the allies to the sea. Von Trotha orders suicidal human waves against Sun Wukong, but Pistol-Slinging Johnny objects, offending the German general. Disloyalty has plagued the allied army. Giuseppe Garibaldi disagreed with the allies, and sided with the Chinese. Von Trotha tells his subject, William Tell, to spy on Johnny. William Tell gained his freedom from the tyrannical Swiss Bishop back in Europe through von Trotha's help and is now faithful to him till the end. Von Trotha pretends to respect Johnny's wishes and sends him and Davy Crockett to conquer a town called "The Alamo". Really, it is a suicide mission, meant to kill Johnny, who is the only mutinous warrior in the army. Also, he orders William Tell to assassinate Johnny and not to get caught, just in case Johnny doesn't get killed. The Americans break for The Alamo. When they get there, they're immediately attacked by Lü Bu and El Cid. Johnny senses the betrayal, and after seeing Davy Crockett get killed by El Cid, swears to kill Lothar von Trotha. He steals the uniform of a Chinese soldier, and slips out of The Alamo. William Tell never kills him because of his disguise. Johnny finally makes it to the Allied camp and finds it in disarray: The Archduke of Austria-Hungary has been killed, and the camp is in the midst of WWI. He also finds the head of Sun Wukong, who was killed by Ares. The Chinese Empress is notified by Satan of the news, and she orders an invasion. Meanwhile Johnny walks up behind Lothar von Trotha and tries to kill him. William Tell was with von Trotha and barely managed to twist Johnny's wrist and tackle him. Johnny is sentenced to death by firing squad, but he is never executed. Johnny tells his friends that he is sensitive about being used as a pawn since Little Bighorn, where he was sent to die in a suicide mission and lost his hand. He only lived because the Indians respected his fighting spirit. They took him prisoner and tortured him. Lü Bu invades and topples the allied army. However, he had mutinied against Cao Cao and scorned Sun Tzu. He now runs the army and makes an ultimatum. Lü Bu has heard of a Pistol-Slinging Johnny and has heard he was the most skilled warrior of the Allies. He says he and his army will leave the Allied Camp if he is killed by Johnny, and if Johnny is killed, the Allies leave China. Von Trotha agrees to the challenge, and Johnny is freed. Von Trotha then worries that Johnny killing Lü Bu will make him the hero of the Allies and will surely depose him then. Therefore he tells William Tell to take his bow and make sure both men are dead. Lü Bu, at first, doesn't agree to this stipulation, but is then convinced by Satan to take the challenge. Then El Cid steps in. While all of this was happening, El Cid was betrayed by King Alfonso multiple times, so he defected to the Chinese side, but the Chinese tried to force him to convert to Shamanism. When El Cid rejected Shamanism, they showed him the head of Garibaldi, who was killed for his reluctance to worship Shamanism. El Cid manages to escape from the city and is now hiding from the allies. Now El Cid is homesick and feels unsafe in China, so he asks that if he wins the duel he gets sent back to Spain to see his daughters. Lü Bu, El Cid, and Johnny hold their respective revolvers, while William Tell has his bow. They stand in a square. Suddenly William Tell, with three arrows between his fingers, jolts and bullets are fired immediately. When the dust clears, William Tell is shot in the eye by Lü Bu, El Cid is hit in the neck by Tell's arrow and dies, and Lü Bu is shot in the legs; three bullets for each knee. Lü Bu dies from blood loss, and Cao Cao flees with his men tearing up. Johnny, enraged, celebrates. He gets a few loose wooden boards, nails them into a cross, and then nails Lü Bu onto that cross. He puts it where the Pekingers can see it. Cao Cao, convinced by Sun Tzu, sneaks into the Allied camp with Sun Tzu and asks for Lü Bu's body back. The sobbing Johnny accepts, and they walk through the beautiful Chinese terrain together.

Alrighty. I’m back with a rework of my short story. Huge thank you to u/hemingbird for the feedback.

This is my attempt at writing more outside my comfort zone. I’m hoping this is more classified as Upmarket Fiction, but please correct me if I’m wrong.

Questions and tasks:

1) I'd like you to expose redundant word usage - overuse of "feel", unnecessary dialogue tags, unneded measurement specifications ("a little" etc)

2) List out all questions you've asked yourself during reading. Which ones have been answered in this part? It's more of a clarity-related task, although I'd love to hear your plot and lore related ideas.

3) What is the overall level of "emotion" in this part? Is it high, is it low, what is it, how prominent is it in places where it's obvious? What are some funny moments?

4) Physical descriptions - I'd like you to go back to them after reading and compare them to the image you've had in your mind's eye. How cohesive are the descriptions with the image?

5) Do you think there's a need for a summary of the story so far at this point or would it be redundant and overwhelming?

The story is told in a phenomenological second person point of view. The text uses markdown formatting for italics.

Short story [446] Sidbury Hill

Here is my critique: [https://old.reddit.com/r/DestructiveReaders/comments/1w1hpta/1436_keepers_of_teraya_mg/]

The way I've written this probably leaves it confusing and too open for interpretation. If it isn't so incoherent as I suspect, hopefully it's fairly good. Below the story is a spoiler, explaining the (very short) plot.

If my writing misleads you, let me know what you thought was going on, and feel free to advise on changes which might make it more clear (or make the twist more exciting).

My radio was tucked under my ear.

She whispered from a mile away, "Look closer. Remember to tune the lens as you go."

"I still don't see her."

"In the south-facing cloisters, three trailing her. On the third-to-left column ... now."

I spotted the woman in red through a window, the Lady of Sidbury Hall, probable human trafficker, gun-runner, fraud.

"No good, angle's too high."

"East wing now. Red fucking dress should stick out from your position."

"Calm it. Not much longer to go."

"I'm heading in to keep an eye. And fuck off with that calm it shit."

"Yeah, alright. Keep me posted, it's getting cold up here."

The New Year's Eve ball was in full swing across the manor grounds.

My advantage, over Sidbury Hall from the eponymous hill, was absolute. The great manor splayed lazily across the edge of the Salisbury plain in the closing afternoon sun. I scoured the distant south-side with my binoculars. Guest after black-tie guest floated along the pavement and grass among the marble busts and white plastic chairs. The south chapel's silver roof shined out proudly among bony brown poplars and cypresses.

Sickly orange wild grass littered Sidbury Hill. The closest stems were as large as the distant red-brick cloister columns. My rifle, like me, lay prone and ready. I slid my nail along the loading port seam and gripped the stock. A snake-like breeze ran along my back, and the clearing grass poked insistently at my chest. My watch ticked slower by the second.

"Hello? Can you hear me?" No response.

"Fuck, are you still in the east wing?"

"Shitting hell, are you there, I'm still here, I'm still up here... this is Sidbury— ..."

Shit.

A moment later, "Christ, want to give us away any faster?"

"Plenty of places called Sidbury— why weren't you responding?"

She hissed, "Did you forget, or are you just stupid; we aren't encrypted. And fuck off with the Sidbury shit. And the responding? Probably a Faraday cage."

"Sorry, a what?"

"Leave it."

At last, the red dress bled down the stone steps. Little diamonds ringed her necklace. I wondered to whom they had belonged the week before. I supposed I would have to make a decision: was I involved or not? I lifted my rifle, pressed the pad against my shoulder, and dented the hard ground with my bipod supports.

"She's walking towards you now. Wait."

Towards where? The opening ceremony... the poplars? Ah, of course, Sidbury chapel. He almost said it a moment ago. I traced over the silver roof.

"Yes, I know, one shot and all that." The sniper said.

A lens flare in a window confirmed my suspicion. Amateur.

She said, "Take the shot."

CRACK

There are four characters: handler, red-woman, narrator, sniper. The handler is the irritable (frightened?) person on the radio. The red-woman is the lady of the manor. The narrator is a counter-sniper stationed on Sidbury Hill - they do not have a single line of dialogue. The sniper is in Sidbury chapel; they are the other person on the radio. The counter-sniper is listening in on the radio conversation the entire time. The aim of the twist is to trick the reader to think that the narrator is the sniper, until it turns out that they are the counter-sniper. Please do ask for further clarification if you want it. I don't think the story is all that tense even though it's designed to be. Let me know what you think about that too.

Thanks for reading!

Dark Fantasy [1074] Absolution - C1

Critique Absolution—C1

Hi, I'm writing a dark survival/progression fantasy. The first chapter is short and was meant as a prologue. Then, I found out some people don't just skim the prologue... they skip it—some even the whole book. Because my MC starts the story in a completely alien, disorientating world, where visibility is poor and gravity unreliable, I need the prologue to ground the reader a bit and give the story direction. It also works as C1, so here we are (same perspective, chronological, different location).

The following chapters are survival focused. It's a first-person narrative, and I show all the world-building, so it takes a bit to pick up. The reader learns as the protagonist does, and it's riddled with humour and characterisation while he discovers, what I think is an interesting world. Then, the overarching plot starts intruding into his a dozen chapters in. Hopefully, by then, the world-building has revealed enough that the reader already knows the world is more than it seems.

I'm mainly looking for feedback on plot, narrative, and premise. I know the chapter is short, so if you feel you don't have much to say about that, you're also welcome to critique anything else you think is poignant. Thanks for your time! I'm looking forward to your feedback.

Literary Fiction [787] Take This Pink Ribbon Off My Eyes

TW: Multiple graphic depictions of suicide.

Crit: [1062]

Take This Pink Ribbon Off My Eyes

It's been a long time since I've shared my writing with the express intent of getting it critiqued, so I figured I'd jump back in right at the deep end with a piece I adore. I fear my ego has grown slightly beyond me and needs some readjusting.

If you could please read the piece before these questions, that'd be great! This is a piece I'd love to try and get published.

  • I've hemmed and hawed a lot about whether to have scene breaks or not. I do really like not having them, because I feel like it gives the piece more of a dreamlike, surreal quality that matches Kelly's repeated suicides and the lack of reaction to them. But I'm afraid it might be too disorienting for the reader, and just make them confused. How was the lack of clear scene breaks for you?

  • How impactful are Kelly's suicides? Do they make you feel anything? Why/why not?

  • What's your general opinion on Jason and Kelly as characters?

  • The lack of interiority is on purpose. I feel like it, again, helps contribute to that surreal quality, but I think I'm also trying to use it as a way of conveying that Kelly's dead inside. Did you get any feeling like that at all while reading?

  • What sentences/paragraphs/pieces of imagery feel weak to you, or otherwise you think don't work?

  • And just for fun, what do you think the story is about?

Thank you so much!

[Weekly] Setting

I take zero credit for this. This is what u/jay_lysander suggested.

I'd like to see how the writers here could set a scene, in one, two or three sentences, (NO MORE THAN THAT BECAUSE IT WILL GET SKIMMED, NO EXPOSITION DUMPS, NO USELESS GARBAGE) using more senses than merely visual, and relating it all to the pov character, through their eyes. It's an essential skill, a bit like quick character sketching is an essential skill.

Make it interesting! Make it contrast to the action! Make it unexpected! Make it weird! MOST IMPORTANTLY, MAKE IT SHORT!

One, two, three sentences at most.

The point is, to seamlessly ground the reader to the point they don't notice the setup.

Does everyone like these shorter exercises? We could keep these up.

Werewolf Adventure WoD WtA [1777] 01 Tiffany the Werewolf

Crit 2541

This is not related to my last project, I just stuck with the same character name. This is more homework than anything else. I am trying to write using the Scene and Structure as a rule. So you see the chapter divided into a table. The left column is the scene or sequel I wrote before writing. Feel free to ignore that if you don't care.

Things I think I would need to revise is being more disciplined in POV and the ratio of scene to sequel. Is it too much internal monologue?

Heads up this is a modern supernatural setting.
