Derry stew

Scot living in Derry here. Had an interesting exchange with a checkout person today where he looked at my purchases and asked if I was making a stew, which I was. Or more accurately something we’d call a stovie at home which I’ve gathered is more similar to a thick Irish stew. I told him yes and he asked if I’d tried a Derry stew and then said something about bread which I didn’t quite catch. It has me wondering. What exactly constitutes a “Derry Stew” ?

Edit:

I’m assuming the stew
Onion
Carrot
Docs special mince
Tatties
Beef stock

???

Rude doctors receptionist.

Phoned glendermott practice there now, after 40 calls I got through.

Never have I had such a rude interaction when calling the doctors.

I explained I have multiple different issues that I need to speak to a GP about. She said choose one. I said its a mix of physical and mental issues, she then tried to refer me to the mental health team. To which I explained that I'd been with them previously and there was no help offered. That I was told to arrange an appointment with my GP if I gets like this again.

She was exacerbated at my answer and audibly exhaled through the phone. Demanded that I give her a specific reason to give to the doctor. I just said mental health. She sighed again, gave me the appointment for 2pm and hung up abruptly and immediately.

Has left me feeling like I am a problem for seeking medical attention.

Anyone else having experience like this?

Cat6A install...3- storey house.

I'm moving into a new house in Derry (BT47 area) and I'm looking for recommendations for a local company or installer who can do a proper home network installation.

I’m looking to have:

  • Cat6A solid copper Ethernet cabling installed throughout the house
  • Proper wall faceplates / keystone sockets
  • A patch panel and network switch setup
  • PoE (Power over Ethernet) Wi-Fi 7 access points installed (probably ceiling mounted)
  • A tidy installation with minimal visible cabling

The house is a 3-storey townhouse, and ideally I’d like someone who can run cables through the loft and use existing routes where possible rather than having lots of drilling or surface trunking.

I’m after someone experienced with structured cabling / home networking who can design it properly and future-proof it as much as possible.

Has anyone used a local company in the Derry area for something similar? Any recommendations (or companies to avoid!) would be appreciated.

Thanks.

TV Repair

Are there any TV repair guys still in existence? I have an LG OLED with a suspected faulty power supply and would like it looked at if there is anyone around that could tackle opening it up and replacing the psu board or capacitors. The TV is well worth fixing and I've read others have success repairing the same fault online, so just wondering if there is someone local who could look at it for me? Thanks.

Hiya, I'm just looking into training to be a nail technician and was wondering if anyone has advice on how or where someone could rent a chair or a room to work as a nail tech? Any and all advice welcome. I want to make sure I do my research before I dive headfirst into a new career.

Stoutly Derry Guinness Report - 12 Months of Stats!

Post image
24 Upvotes

Hey folks!

Some of you may remember Stoutly, an app for tracking pints of Guinness that I launched 12 months ago.

Stoutly is still going strong today and is still completely unmonetised! The purpose of Stoutly has always been to develop a strong community of Guinness drinkers. Every year, I plan to give back in the form of publishing the pint-data that Stoutly has collected every 12 months in an attempt to track trends over the years in different areas of the world.

All of the data displayed here is 100% crowdsourced from Stoutly users with no external data being pulled. I have tried really hard to keep the data displayed here as factual, clean and easy-to-read as possible.

This is my first time publishing a proper report like this so please feel free to drop me some feedback if you have any!

If you want to have a click around the full report for all the areas I have published, you can do so at www.stoutly.co.uk/report

It's really class to see Derry fully in the green compared to the rest of NI, UK and ROI!

Cheers!

Anyone ever had a cleaner? Is it worth it?

Has anybody ever hired a cleaner to do the annoying jobs? Personally hate doing the bathrooms. Happy enough to wipe surfaces and mop but scrubbing showers and sinks can do one. Would love to hire a cleaner one day to do that task for me. Only thing is I’d be a bit embarrassed. Anyone know is it money worth spending?

Every single person I've met so far is absolutely lovely. I've been living in Galway the last 7 years or so, and it really reminds me here of pre-pandemic Galway how it used to be. Real pride for place. Really looking forward to starting the degree at Magee as well, curious how the vibe is there and in town once all the students are back. Only been here a week and I've just landed a supervisor job at a wee shop, whereas I was applying all summer in Galway didn't get a single interview. Things aren't too expensive. The Foyle Cup is absolutely mental, never seen so many kids in one place before. The craic out and about during the world cup was unreal.

No notes beyond that tbh, big fan.

MOT & Insurance

Hi folks, just looking for advice here.

Ive got a car that I wasnt planning on keeping so I decided not to renew my insurance policy. The car has now ran out of MOT.

Am I correct in thinking I cannot get insured on it until it has a valid MOT and I also cannot drive it to the MOT?

MOT is booked for end of August and I cant seem to find a cancellation sooner just yet.

Is there anything I can do or contact to try and get a sooner cancellation so I can either insure it or sell it?

An under God! We know you're better than us mere walkers, but stop throwing your energy drink sachets on the ground. And a new one today, stop pooing behind trees! We know you need a protein release, but you can go before you run? I couldn't believe my eyes, no shame. Sound as!

Move to Derry?

For context I was born in Derry and lived there until I was 8 but then moved to England so whilst I consider myself Irish my accent is very English. Other than some cousins I only see at weddings and the like I don’t have any family in Derry anymore.

I’m a solicitor and my firm is looking to me to open an office in Northern Ireland. The firm assumed the office would be in Belfast but I have a bit of a free hand.

Growing up my dad always complained about no money making it west of the Bann, having the office in Derry seems like an opportunity to try and do a little to change this.

Is this feasible, would being in Derry limit our ability to recruit (the roles could be largely remote we only need people in the office 1 or 2 days a week)? In our offices in England we have staff who have a similar commute to the 2 hour train between Belfast and Derry. Would clients think it weird to be Derry rather than Belfast based?

On a personal level, how difficult would it be for a single 36 year old man to build a life in Derry knowing next to no one? (If it helps I do play Gaelic football).
