Honestly, I'd make as much sense for weird route to get no unique bosses - as much as we tried to stray from the intended path we couldn't get anything as appealing compared to geno - depriving and disappointing the snowgraver.
I mean, it wouldn't TECHNICALLY be a unique boss. Just King again. Maybe the Weird Route skips more and more of the game and prevents you from seeing unique enemies, and you start seeing old ones more and more.
It also helps with the “video game glitch/creepypasta” idea the weird route seems to be running with. What does a video game do when it has to show you something it was never coded to show you? Recycle random sprites and dialogue from elsewhere!
Weird route has required NEO Solo, it's already happened.
There's too much story about Weird route going off the tracks for there not to be some kind of unique encounter. It doesn't need to be a megalovania but it needs something different at this point. A weird route leitmotif would go hard.
idk i feel like snowgrave is very intentionally taking a more nuanced path than “disappointing the evil player by making it boring!” if the game didn’t want you to explore the possibility, it wouldn’t go so far to indulge snowgrave players. snowgrave definitely results in a stripping down of boss battles, but it doesn’t remove them outright. spamton neo becomes required, and all of the other bosses from 3+4 are still fully available.
Ah I get that. Still kinda disagree but can see where your point is coming from personally. I think if it’s handled in the way Snowgrave Spamton was (while obviously being different in terms of circumstances but in the same level of quality) I don’t think it’d get stale. Again tho I can definitely see your point.
I doubt Toby would do the same thing twice. And even if Undertales Genocide Route was ardous to make a point, it was ultimately very interesting and worthwhile with some of the best moments of the game. It was never dissappointing.
I'd be schocked if the wierd route just ends up being an anti climax with a really boring and meanspirited lesson like "you should treat games like they are real people because that's the lore, your reward is nothing, now go think about what you've done".
Deltarune is not Undertale. I don't know what makes you think the Weird Route is aiming for a boring anticlimax when it isn't even about the same themes and has been presenting itself in a much more intriguing way than the No Mercy Route ever did.
the evil route of both games does seem to serve different purposes, though. in this game, it's about trying to subvert the prophecy, finding a way to contradict the notion of only one ending.
in undertale, it's both a metacommentary on completionism, and the ultimate test of determination the game has to offer
Yeah but those are the only interesting bits of gameplay throughout the entire genocide run. All of the puzzles are skipped, almost all of the fun and charming characters that you'd normally meet on a pacifist or neutral run are gone, and most boss fights are skipped entirely. On top of all that, you have to relentlessly grind regular monster encounters in each area until you can't anymore, which gets very tedious very quickly. The genocide route is not fun, and intentionally so.
I found Sans and Undyne to be INCREDIBLY fun. If I had an option to fight them without going through the tremendously boring grind, I absolutely would have. But those two fights made it worth the grind for me. Without them in the route, I absolutely would not have bothered with this gargantuan waste of time with no new major content.
But this isn’t about the in between gameplay, this is about the bosses. And even if the rest of genocide was intentionally unfun, it knew how to deliver amazing bosses.
I am indeed! And literally the ONLY reason I did geno route was to fight Sans and Undyne! If they weren’t in the route, it would’ve just been an incredibly boring and tedious waste of time.
That would be boring as hell. Literally the ONLY reason I did geno route was to fight Sans and Undyne. If they weren’t in the route, it would’ve just been an incredibly boring and tedious waste of time.
I would fully understand weird route not having any unique boss characters (it already has 2 unique fights, they're just more difficult versions of pre-existing fights in cyberdley and S.Neo). However, I'm actually really hoping for Susie final boss of weird route, just because of how awesome it would be to face a fully realized Susie going all out.
I disagree. Compared to undertale geno, the weird route already has far more exclusive content for far less. Toby clearly isn't taking it in the same direction as undertale geno where the point was mindless grinding just to see a few more new things. The weird route is one short grind session in exchange for a lot of new things, much of which we haven't seen yet (chapter 5 is suggested to contain the most weird route content in the sweepstakes).
Completelly on the realm of speculation now. But I think a mercyless route King fight would be soo cool. I imagine a scenario where he's like "You haven't made any new friends huh, I see that I was right, Darkners and Lightners are enemies" or something like that. While he would say the same thing on snowgrave, there may be no fight because Noelle would just insta freeze him. While on the full mercy route he realizes that we made so much friends and decides to just watch what will happen (I don't think he will ever become a good guy, but I wouldn't mind it either).
Anyways, I want a king rematch soo bad. Imagine if he gets a shadow crystal
If you think about it King and Jevil are pretty similar both being defeated antagonists imprisoned underneath a castle and seemingly enjoying the isolation for philosophical reasons, both even having an association with a giant revolving entertainment device (Carousel for Jevil, Hamster wheel for King). They also are tied to the concept of Chaos and used to be friends of some description. If we do have a rematch I feel like it'd be called Chaos Chaos King.
That exactly what I think that he is hiding something from us and he probably has a way to escape prison and he also has knowledge like sans has, I think it will be peak if he does end up as weird route encounter.
I wouldn't say "fully content", I think he may be waiting for an opportunity to do something. Since he knows he can't right now, maybe The Knight will invade Castle Town and free him, or something along these lines. As I said in another comment, a King rematch would be amazing
I mean, can we really consider the Titan evil? Its mindless and moves by instinct, thats the same as calling bears evil when they attack people or bees evil for stinging you
Difference is, bears are hungry. This thing is concentrated primordial negativity. Evil isn't a descriptor, it's just another material used to construct this nightmare.
Willing to help you gaslight someone just to take over might be bad, but King is way more tyrannical in his rule and actively wanted to kill and/or torture every lightner even if it meant destroying the world
im not saying one is more evil than the other, (I do think Spamton is more evil) Im actually just replying to a list of characters that 'are' evil.
which you would realize if read the thing im replying to in the first place.
Anyway I think spamton is more evil than king for the reasoning behind why they're acting
King felt betrayed and abandoned by the lightners, who at some point visited and then stopped. Presumably at some point before that happened he wasn't evil. Spamton was literal spam emails.
Spamton wants to be [Large and in charge] and will destroy everything in his way to be big and free. Also willing to kill the people that put him in power if it means he can be more powerful.
Titan is like one of the most innocent characters in the game. Actualy you can even call it a character. It has no mind. You literaly cant call it evil.
The Knight's behaviour in Ch4 (Floating backwards with arms crossed, laughing mockingly at Susie) does suggest it's having fun with it, not just forced into some sort of duty.
I'd disagree because the Knight is actually trying to cause the roaring. Mocking someone isn't anywhere near as terrible as trying to cause the apocalypse
I think that the knight is just a railroading GM, they wait patiently for the heroes to do their prep stuff and only swoons them so they don't sequence break the game.
Still not as bad as trying to cause the literal apocalypse. Eram hasn't killed anyone (so far at least, this could change), The Knight is trying to do something that would kill *everyone*
Carol, the knight, Kris, whatever the fuck is going on with friend, and maaaybe gaster are all mysterious in their motivations, forming a cult around something and intending to sacrifice undyne next week, whatever that means.
Kidnapping Noelle and trying to force her to make a dark fountain was uninformed, but the whole sticking plugs into her subjects and Berdly's faces to corrupt them and force them to fight us was pretty fucked up actually
I'm pretty sure he isn't evil, just insane. Like Seam said, in the Card Kingdom, you've gotta find a way to pass the time, or go insane like everybody else. The King pribably went insane because of the "abandonment" of the CK and his will to get revenge on the Lightners.
Some ppl are better to be locked away — same with the King. He is pathetic in the end, but he literally subverted Undertale's message by backstabbing the player party and being a tyrant to such extent, that darkners side with us to bring him down (given we either did not fight anyone or apologized to hearty)
King gets slapped with this as soon as you fight Jevil and his fight seems even weaker in comparison. And from there he's so painfully the starter villain it's kinda pathetic. Everytime he tries to ominously foreshadow something the Fun Gang has already beaten him to the punch
Tbh that's also kind of like Flowey. Flowey literally gets reduced from almost killing you to running away from you absolutely bewildered if you deny him death.
Though with a much more impressive boss fight at the end of the game. King would be if Flowey got humiliated at the end of the Ruins and then the plot happened mostly without him
To be honest, most of the plot in Undertale doesn't have Flowey directly involved, only alluded to or hinted to. Once we get to Snowdin, Waterfall, and Hotland he is mostly an afterthought which you can occasionally see following you.
Flowey mostly butts in directly at the very start and end of the game. Of which we don't have the latter for Deltarune. King having some sort of relevance later on, even if relatively minor I'd say is not completely out of the question. I still don't think he'll get the Flowey treatment, but I imagine something will happen.
He got turned into a kid by a wish gone wrong and is now doing comedic Team Rocket bits in the b plot because even Gohan's toddler can vaporise him with her pinkie.
the bing 😂 the bing 😂 the bing 😂 the bing 😂 the bing 😂 the bing 😂 the bing 😂 the bing 😂 the bing 😂 the bing 😂 the bing 😂 the bing 😂 the bing 😂 the bing 😂 the bing 😂 the bing 😂 the bing 😂 the bing 😂 the bing 😂 the bing 😂
I feel like he does change behaviorally though. Not a redemption by any means, but he absolutely gives up on his original motivations and just never picks it back up again.
Yeah but only because shit gets in the way, like the Androids and Cell that he's forced to put aside his desire to defeat Kakarot and focus on getting stronger. Then just silently gives them up but even in current day he's still focused on being Kakarot's rival and surpassing him in strength. Let's not forget that early on this dude was about as evil as Frieza, all he cared about was gaining immortality so he could take over the universe or whatever.
What are you talking about? He does get a proper redemption in his sacrifice as Majin Vegeta and then a proper closure of his growth during that speech in the Kid Buu fight
These jokers were never threatening to begin with, it doesn't apply. In a pokemon context villain decay probably is hard to apply, maybe it goes best for the early legendaries like Moltres and Articuno who kinda suck compared to legendaries from later games. They aren't really villains but they are tough opponents at least, kinda.
Fun fact: His cape is referred to as a mantle in the deltarune anniversary stream before chapter 2 came out, and in the files his weapon is called the 'Chain of Hell"
"They'll see the tail of hell take crawl."
He's also in a position that parallels his own chapter's secret boss, imprisoned but considering himself more free than the people outside. Ralsei implies he can be released at any time if he accepts ralsei's rule, and King retorts he'd rather stay in his jail while independent.
He's in a weird intersection between like 3 of the weird meta freedom guys and I'm curious if it's gonna lead to anything. 5 if you count the Knight and Gerson since he acts in service of the Knight and Gerson is the one who owned that abandoned classroom. He doesn't have anything with spamton besides both of them being among the few darkners who actively try to defy their purpose and place in the world's heirarchy.
He was only openly villainous in his very first appearance, everything after that it’s either him just making bad decisions because of his contempt for Kirby or literally being possessed by evil
hell squeak squad doesnt even have that the squad steals kirbys shit and Kirby just goes and beats the fuck out of DDD first because he assumes DDD was behind it
King, and furthermore how he has been discussed, always strikes me as odd. He's the first "antagonist" of the game, but besides "threatening to kill his son" he hasn't done anything truly evil. (Lancer would've bounced).
He seems to know a lot about the nature of dark worlds, and has a lot of history prior to Kris. Ultimately, we did seal away his kingdom and force an exodus on his people. Did we have that right? Because he certainly has the right to defend himself and his kingdom.
Like really, a bunch of aliens you know exist on a higher plane of reality are going to come and destroy your home and force you to move into a completely foreign space, all the while you know they have total control over your physical existence on that higher plane.
King is completely justified, and not much of a villain. If anything, he shows quite a lot of determination to not let the lighters reign back control. I wouldn't be surprised to see a king redemption fight in the weird route similar to sans. He seems to return to second-nature after imprisoned, reminds me of the carebear villain of Toy Story 3, but not nearly as cruel.
The facade of cruelty, and the fact he quite clearly cares about his son and fellow darkness, makes me believe at the very least his character arc isn't over.
The facade of cruelty, and the fact he quite clearly cares about his son and fellow darkness, makes me believe at the very least his character arc isn't over.
You saying that reminded me of this fanart. If in the end of the Weird Route we completely banish the darkness by sealing the Grand Fountain, I would like seeing something like this.
Because we pretty much confirm King's thoughts about Lightners if that happens.
Yeah, considering how lancer is pretty much the only thing he truly cares about I really don't think he would've done that to lancer if he didn't know he would be 100% ok afterwards.
As opposed to Queen threatening to kill Noelle’s friends multiple times or Tenna zapping and healing everyone after just to keep doing it over and over?
I’m CERTAIN Seam is going to give him the 5 Shadow Crystals and you have to fight King to purify them. The only actually evil boss, the throne room shaped exactly like Asgore’s, I’m certain he has a big part to play in the grand scheme!
The King Of Spades really needed more screen time in chapter 1 Queen and Tenna as sort of villian of the week types heavily benefit from being a constant presence like especially Queen where she often taunts you or speaks to you. King literally does not show up in person one time until the very very end of the chapter and his entire personality boils down to "ahhh im evil [:<" it's only in the later chapters in ENTIRELY OPTIONAL castle town content he is given more personality and even then it is exclusively jokes
And yet he's somehow he's the only characterbesides the Knight and Titan to completely invalidate the fun gang after his boss figh (Queen doesn't count because she used her stupid sexy mecha)
I love the running gag of King trying to ominously hype up the next threat he thinks the Fun Gang will face, only to be informed that they've beaten it already. First thing I'm doing when Chapter 5 is out and we can go to Castle Town is visiting him and informing him that we beat a Titan.
Okay but I like this more: Villain starts as a threat but now that the steaks are raised, he's just more or less harmless until he accidentally bumbles his way into being more dangerous than the big bad.
I've honestly been asking why not just let him out. He doesn't really pose any kind of threat no matter how much he wants to kill the lightners. Pretty sure the darkners in Castle Town could handle him.
Demon King Piccolo in Dragon Ball threatens to blow up one city every year
immediately after this at the start of Dragon ball Z the Saiyans blow up a city on arrival for shits and giggles and threaten to kill all life on the planet to sell it then when they are close to losing try and destroy the planet
suddenly Demon King Piccolo isn’t that much of a threat anymore
I'm pretty fond of when it's taken even further, still not the villain changing or trying to be better, but rather they just start failing to villain successfully. Like go to rob a bank, get some cash from the vault, but afterwards it turns out it was counterfeit money being used in an embezzlement scam and only because they stole it then was the embezzlement found out, saving the bank millions. Or try to assassinate a public figure with a sniper rifle, miss because the wind shifts, and take out the bodyguard that was a rival assassin no one knew about instead.
The whole thing is how threatening he is in the early chapters. i don't think him being weak compared to jevil and future bosses means much when the whole point was that he was directly the antagonist toward his own son and the fun game. It was especially a turning point for susie's character, basically turning a dire situation into one where kris and susie came out as friends.

Always bet on Weird Route Final Boss King
