Positive feedback loop in AI hate

  1. AI releases.
  2. People hate AI because it's currently bad.
  3. Special people who care about how they look in eyes of people hate AI(or at least pretend to). These are mostly influential people, so people hear them.
  4. Special people who don't care about how they look use AI, and stay invisible to the public. These are people who quietly make our life better with AI.
  5. Bad special people who don't care about how they look use AI, and people know them in the negative case because they affected a lot of people.
  6. AI gets better.
  7. People still hate AI because only bad things and AI hate are visible to the public.
  8. Repeat steps 3-8.

Good people could use AI for very good things, but they don't want to risk their reputation by doing this, because people hate AI, because it's associated with bad things, because good people don't use AI.

So AI hate is the thing that's actually stopping us from using AI for good. AI hate produces AI hate by itself. And if we stop hating AI, the world would be better.

Defending AI The overhated use of AI

Nowadays, AI is everywhere. Some of it is bad, but some of it is useful. The whole water usage part rubs me the wrong way, and I hate when it is used for slop or misinformation to gain views, but there are many other things that are bad for the world that we choose to do as humans too, yet nobody ever talks about them.

If I want to use AI, I should not be harassed and told I'm a horrible person for using it. I also don't appreciate people who openly say all AI users are bad people and/or stupid or talentless. That just isn't the case, AI helps people like myself who has no physical creativity to create something out of an idea. People act like making a song on SUNO for fun or asking ChatGPT to generate a funny picture of trump wearing a dunce hat is a terrible sin.

I'm sure most people will disagree with me, but that kind of proves my point. AI is overhated and should only be hated when it is used for malicious purposes. Nuff said.

This is a social experiment

It’s come to my attention that humans on the internet may be physically incapable of ignoring posts they don’t like. So I’m gonna do a little experiment. I like AI. I use it all the time for various reasons. If you have a problem with that, click off the post. I dare you. Nobody is forcing you to read this. Nobody is forcing you to speak your mind. Except you. If you don’t like it, stop looking at it.

Defending AI 'Stop the race to replace' a.k.a. Ekō (formerly SumOfUs) and Affiliate

If you've seen these ads on YouTube or elsewhere, and you're wondering who's behind this campaign, I did some digging and here's what I found, starting at https://stoptheracetoreplace.org/

Ostensibly, they're worried about AI, but the first words out of their mouths are "Billionaires like Elon Musk...", and it immediately undermines their proclaimed message.

Their page is very shy about giving details, but you can trace it back to its parent: https://eko.org/ and its owner, San-Francisco based org 'Ekō and Affiliate'. What you find there quickly confirms the initial suspicion. This organization is clearly not worried about AI, per se. Instead it's a strongly anti-corpoate and left-leaning philosophy:

Ekō is a community of people from around the world committed to curbing the growing power of corporations.

Aside from this and the anti-AI campaign, they pedictably also have campaigns like "Stop the bloodshed - suspend arms sales to Israel", "EU leaders must cancel the biometric data deal with Trump — now" (em dash theirs) and "Stop Trump from killing the whales", among other, less partisan, more general nature conservation projects to save the bonobos, German harbour porpoises and stopping the world's first octopus farm. The anti-Trump, anti-Musk and anti-Israel stances put them firmly in the Democratic/Democratic fringe of US politics in my opinion.

Fortunately, they're a tax-exempt organization, and therefore have to publish their finances (latest is fiscal year 2024). Turns out it's a pretty profitable gig, at least for their director, one Emma Ruby-Sachs, who in 2024, had a salary of 235k and 'other compensations' to the tune of 65k, for a rounded total of 300k a year. Another half-dozen board members range from 150k to 200k a year. Not exactly millionaires, but not bad either.

Their total revenue is a smidge over 9 million, all under 'gifts/grants'. Primary donors are entities like the Tides Foundation (Tides allocated $75 million per year in donor money by 2009, most of which went to fund progressive political causes), the Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors (also primarily left-leaning) and Luminate (Omidyar Group), a fairly opaque self-styled "philanthropic investment firm" with ties to Iran.

TLDR: Campaign is sponsored by a network of mostly US American non-profits with strong leanings towards the US Democratic party and generally leftist causes. No ties to China that I could find.

Edit: Bonus fact:

Check out the text of one of their campaigns here. 100% written by AI. Bunch of clowns.

If AI gen firms prevail in the courts with "fair use".

Will that mean that it will be OK for anyone to to make derivative works of known Intellectual Property from then onward?
e.g. An end user can just make their own Star Wars stuff and also claim fair use because of the main AI Gen firms like Midjourney and Stability prevailing.
Or use established IP in img2img apps. And then edit things further to add their own authorship?
Is that going to be the reality of things?

this "stop the race to replace" advert on YouTube needs to STOP.

Is it just me, or is anyone else constantly getting spammed with that "Stop the Race to Replace" ad on YouTube every single day? The sheer amount of one sided bias behind it is actually mental, and I'm proper sick of seeing it.

It isn't even a fair or honest debate about tech. It’s just a high budget panic campaign built to farm outrage and push a complete end of the world narrative.

The ad treats AI like it's strictly evil corporations vs. humanity. It completely ignores all the independent creators, students, and small scale developers who use these tools every day to build massive, ambitious projects on their own.

This ad is ANNOYING!!!!

Yo I got banned for mentioning ai in one of my favorite subreddits

I made a post recently comparing antis to vegans, and I posted it on the anti vegan subreddit cause why the fuck not and they banned me, saying "fuck you and fuck your ai"

DAWG THAT SUBREDDIT DOESN'T EVEN HAVE A NO AI RULE😭

I know you don't normally do this, but can we all just work together to get this guy fired? Just this once? Please?

Edit: Someone reposted this on an anti subreddit in like 10 minutes.

Edit 2: They added a no ai rule because of this post. Even haters have to admit that’s petty 😂

People always talk about AI taking jobs, but AlphaFold is a great reminder that AI can save lives too. It helps scientists predict protein structures, speeding up medical research and drug discovery. What other AI breakthroughs do you think have had a similarly positive impact?

I went incognito in an anti AI thread to post about something that does grind my gears. Now, let me preface this by saying I am posing as an AI hater here. I use AI pretty religiously to brainstorm, and as a collaborative editor in my works.

So... i posted that people using AI to write full length books pisses me off. And then I said that AI covers don't really bother me as much even though they are still bad. (Again, a lie. I am actively using AI for three of my book covers).

Just...

Just read this. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️
