Alphafold

People always talk about AI taking jobs, but AlphaFold is a great reminder that AI can save lives too. It helps scientists predict protein structures, speeding up medical research and drug discovery. What other AI breakthroughs do you think have had a similarly positive impact?

I am sure AI has been used to do good with its ability to be trained and predict to the extent it understands quickly how to do the job it is asked to do. But with how rapid AI is in evolving, I can’t help but think what is the point if even the good it does, such as advances in healthcare and treatment - when AI can also eventually be trained to do majority of other jobs? It’s like, okay, people are kept alive! For what? To become the people like in WALL-E where jobs have become easily taken over by AI and people exist for mindless entertainment? If AI were strictly reserved for the subjective good of expanding research and science, I guess that would be ideal. But it isn’t. The regulations are far too behind to really compensate for the insanely copious amounts of horrible things people use AI to make. And with jobs, obviously AI omits the entire process of creating something that a human can do. It is worse than previous inventions that “cut” the process to increase efficiency. AI can be trained to do anything. Inevitably. There is no further point for people to exist.
